Presentation

This 1977 Porsche 911S coupe was modified with RSR-style bodywork and converted into a race car when new by Ted Hulse to meet IMSA specifications. Chassis 9117200114 was subsequently campaigned in the 1978 iterations of the Daytona 24 Hours and 12 Hours of Sebring, and it returned to those events in 1984 to finish 33rd and 27th overall, respectively. The car was raced in IMSA, Trans Am, and SCCA events until the late 1990s, during which time it secured 4th in its class at the 1984 Six Hours of Watkins Glen and 14th overall at the 1985 IMSA Charlotte GTO. Following its retirement from racing, the car was placed into storage through the early 2000s, when ownership transferred and refurbishment work was carried out. It was purchased by its next owner in 2012 and subsequently repainted in white with blue over-the-top stripes before being acquired by the current owner in 2015, after which the car participated in Monterey Historic events at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. The replacement flat-six was built by Rothsport in 2023 to displace 3.5-liters, and it features Bosch mechanical fuel injection, a slide-valve throttle-body system, twin-plug ignition, and dry-sump lubrication. Shifting is via a 930-sourced four-speed manual transaxle, and RSR-style equipment includes widened fenders, lightened bumpers, and a rear wing. It rides on 15″ center-lock magnesium wheels with Brembo calipers and adjustable coilovers. Inside, a single Recaro racing seat with a Sabelt harness is accompanied by a roll cage with door bars, a fire-suppression system, a Motorola radio system, a Wevo shifter, and an ATL fuel cell. This RSR-style 911 IMSA race car is now offered by the seller on behalf of the current owner with an SCCA log book, service records, dynamometer results, and a bill of sale.

The car was reportedly modified when new with RSR-style bodywork including widened fenders, lightweight bumpers, and a rear spoiler. The body was repainted in the 2010s in its current white with blue over-the-top stripes and features roundels along with various period-style decals.

The decklid and front trunk lid are secured with pins, while the windshield, quarter windows, and rear window are made from polycarbonate. The front fascia features air ducts for the oil cooler and brakes, and air intakes are also present in the rear quarters. Further exterior details include through-hood fuel fillers, windshield retaining clips, tow hooks, dual megaphone exhaust outlets, and an electrical cutoff switch affixed to the cowl. Flaws in the finish are shown in the gallery below.

RSR-style 15″ center-lock magnesium wheels are finished in black and mounted with Avon racing slicks. Suspension incorporates adjustable coilovers all around along with adjustable sway bars, Elephant Racing Sphericals bearings up front, and adjustable spring plates out back. Braking is via Porsche-branded Brembo calipers over cross-drilled and ventilated four-wheel discs.

The cockpit is protected by a roll cage with door bars and houses a single Recaro racing seat that expired in 2020. A Sabelt harness is outfitted for the driver, and the black dash incorporates a row of fuses, a Tilton brake-bias adjustment knob, an electric shut-off switch, and controls for the Lifeline fire-suppression system. Additional equipment includes a Motorola radio system, a Wevo shifter, a Longacre multi-pane wink mirror, a Rennline pedal board, and leather door pulls.

The three-spoke steering wheel is mounted on a quick-release hub and fronts VDO instrumentation including a 10k-rpm tachometer as well as gauges monitoring oil temperature, oil pressure, and gearbox temperature. The car is not equipped with an odometer, and total mileage is unknown.

@Dave_Car_Guy
The car was campaigned by Cameron Healy in Monterey each year from 2018-2023 so, "Last raced in 2018", was a typo that I did not catch; that should have read first raced. Current engine house are from the Cumulative time at Rennsport Reunion VI, Rolex Pre-reunion and RMMR in 2023.
There are no issues with the engine, mechanical or otherwise. The car did race in 2023 but it is possible there was an issue with the transponder. I cannot explain why race-monitor doesn't have lap times for some sessions.
@cbsue
Thank you for your observations about Cameron Healy's cars being well turned out. It is true that he has a passion for keeping all of his cars in top condition. Also, as a driver, he has excellent mechanical sympathy and drives his cars fast in a manner that does not damage them.

I have raced against Cameron for years on different grids with a variety of different cars all I can say our his cars are always some of the best turned out cars on the grid to own a car that comes out of his stable would be very fortunate if I did not own a car that is on this same grid I would buy it in a second.
Oct 22, 2026 · 12:16
@blip: Thanks for all the details so far on the racing history! Just to clarify, the listing says “the car was last raced in 2018”, but in the comments you mentioned Cameron Healey reporting laps in the 1:38 range at RMMR in 2023, and I see the log book picture. But no timing sheets. You also mention being accepted into Rennsport Reunion. So..
Where did the 9.5 hours of engine time occur since the 2023 Rothsport motor? Test days and Rennsport?
And since the car was accepted at RMMR in 2023 but seemingly not run, was there a mechanical issue or any issue with the sanctioning body over the 3.5 L motor that kept it from running? As you know, a non conforming motor might be acceptable from some racers who have a solid relationship at RMMR and less so from others.
Thanks!!

I wonder how many out there remember when the RSRs first appeared in the race reports in the car zines back in the day. The first time I saw a photo of one I just about flipped! I was already a little Porsche nut, but the RSR was in another universe with those huge flairs, 917 wheels and that crazy wing. So cool to see this and be reminded of those days gone by.

@Richard01
Great question. The engine was replaced and Rothsport determined that the 3.0 case was no longer viable and had reached the end of its life. The increase in displacement has not been an issue and the car has entered both Rennsport Reunion and RMMR with the new engine. It is an open secret that very few, if any, RSRs are still running original actual 3.0 displacement. Racers gotta race....
Oct 21, 2026 · 19:19
Based on the RMMR timesheets the car ran the orginal 3.0L motor in those events(and its RSR competitors also ran 3.0L motors). Has it been accepted into RMMR or simlar events with the 3.5L motor? These events tend to be picky about running motors that are a larger displacement than run in period by the particular class, and wondering whether a 3.5L motor is going to create a hurdle for the buyer if they want to run it in the top vintage events. By the way, is the 3.0L motor still around?

Also, regarding this car's history. In addition to its significant pro racing history under Ted Hulse, the car has participated in eight Rolex Monterey Motorsport Reunions, the HSR Classic 24 hours of Daytona, four Sonoma Historics, two Velocity invitationals, two Rennsport Reunions and many CSRG and Sovren events. This RSR is a proven example that facilitate entry to significant events of your choice. Furthermore, it is ready to race and no expense has been spared in its upkeep.

Our cars are like our pets, in some ways, in that they do wild things and have crazy interactions in their lives but are unable to tell us about it later. Both of your stories give us little snapshots of this car's life experience that would have been lost to history had you not chimed in.

A few years back I had the privilege of sharing this car at an Endro at Portland International Raceway, After a quick Driver change, I took off for one fantastic drive! These cars Handle Great, Stop Great and have Great Power, No Bad Habits, very easy to drive. I got in a back and forth with a big block Corvette driven by a well respected driver and we exchanged places sometimes several times a lap!
The Vette could get me on the straights, but I'd his see brake lights while still accelerating for the next corner, touch the brakes, and then lead by a good margin until the next long straight. Repeat. It was one of those sessions where after both drivers seek each other out to gush over all the fun we'd had. I see the Vette driver occasionally and he still reminds me of that race and how much fun we had. A Very well Sorted Race Car!

This is my old car! I purchased it from a very well known bank when they put it up for sale on Ebay after confiscating it from a well know vintage racer and bankrupt borrower. They let me buy it before the end of the auction. In the ad it stated, won't start. When I asked the bank about the log books, they did not know what a log book was and did not know where they might be. After a bit of asking around, they were being held by a well known car enthusiast/dealer. Once I contacted this "enthusiast", he demanded $12K for the log books. I then mentioned this "log book hostage" situation to the bank who was selling me the car and that the log books were essential to keep with the car...much like a title. About 7-10 days later, a FedEx package arrived with the log books. All I can figure is the bank must have threatened a lawsuit. The bank once again told me the car would crank but not start and that I would be on my own. I did not even go look at the car in person as I could tell this was Ted Hulses old car and that it had been completely restored. The car arrived on a cold late night. I pushed it into my shop, checked the oil, put in fresh race fuel and cranked it over....no start. I then felt under the dash, flipped a switch and BAM...it fired up immediately. That is a night I will never forget as I raced around the industrial park at 1am.

To my knowledge, the car’s current livery is what was on the car when it Ted Hulse ran those races. The car was listed by Bonham’s in 2012 and the listing, showing some period pictures, is viewable here:

Race-monitor.com can be an excellent resource, although it is not always complete. Thanks for pointing it out.
The car was entered and accepted into RMMR, by Cameron Healy, each year from 20105-2023. Mr. Healy usually entered three cars per year and this RSR was sometimes driven by Jeff Zwart, his close friend. I have attached evidence of this in the form of a timing sheet or log book snap shot for each of the years.
The car was also entered in multiple Rennsport Reunions.
Oct 19, 2026 · 04:20
@blip: You mention that The Rolex Monterey doesn’t publish lap times, but they generally are available on RaceMonitor for 2023. Looking at Group 6 that year, which was 1972–1981 FIA, IMSA, GT, GTX, AAGT, and GTU cars, I can’t find the entry for this car ? I do see Cameron Healey in group 1 that year, but not in this car. Maybe I’m looking at the wrong year?

Thanks for your inquiry. Actual RMMR timing sheets have not historically been published for the public. The car raced most recently in 2023 at RMMR. It was driven by Cameron Healy and Jeff Zwart. FWIW, Mr. Healy reports that he drove comfortably in the 1:39's with his best laps falling in the upper 1:38's.
@cbsue
Thank you for sharing your experience and pointing out the eligibility of this car. That is an important benefit that this car brings to its owner. This car's racing history and excellent visual and mechanical condition enable its owner to enter most, if not all, of the major vintage racing events worldwide.

@JM23
Thanks for the compliment. Alas, as fun as it would be I believe I will not put this one at risk on the backroads... I got lucky a few weeks ago when a deer literally jumped over my 964 on said backroads.

@arahouston
The car's history it substantial and verifiable. It was vetted and represented by Autokennel in the past. Paul, at Autokennel, presented a lot of the history on their platform at the time, as well as on forums during the process which are still searchable. Much of that is presented in the attached gallery. Documentation is extensive. Original logbooks are included. Feel free to DM me with specific questions.

I got all excited seeing it was a @blip listing and just knew we would see this blasting those Oregon backroads with his outstanding skills. Alas, I get it. At 110 db it would wake up the dead. But...sometimes the dead should be awaken! Rise and Shine!

@blip and @Slim_Chance: that's a great photo of the car at Laguna, and it's shown right next to the ever-classy Steve Walker in the great BMW CSL "Luigi", originally campaigned by Hans Stuck. And for those who haven't already done so, click one link back on that photo link to see all the cars in that amazing group. Good company to keep.

I see a comment on photo 439 requesting clarification on the VIN and tying it to the car's history. Is there verification on that?

@Carrerachas
Yes, I agree and wish you could all hear it as well as it is spectacular. Here in Portland we have very strict noise regulations at our racetrack except when the Indycars come to town. We wanted to exercise the car but we had to be very careful from a sound perspective. Oregon state law requires mufflers and a sound limit of 103 db. This car has open megaphones and will exceed 108-110 db under full load. While the owner could have gotten away with a full chat lap before being flagged off that would have been disrespectful to the neighboring communities and would create problems later for the track management. In the end, we decided it was best to short shift and limit the sound output. The true power of the engine is reflected in the dyno sheet from Rothsport Racing showing 390 hp. The sheet and accompanying build receipt are included in the gallery.

Thank you for submitting that photo of the car competing at the Rolex Monterey Motorsports Reunion. That is a stunning photo that I have not seen before.

This is the car I see in my mind when I'm on the track racing a Porsche. I'm more the 1960's era vintage trans am car guy but if the situation was right [I had the $$ and price was right] I'd buy this car for sure. I love it.
