Presentation

This 1967 Volvo 1800S was purchased by the current owner eight years ago, and it was subsequently sent to Klasikinių Automobilių Servisas in Alytus, Lithuania, where it was disassembled and refurbished. Work included a repaint in the original Pearl White, re-trimming the cabin in Black leather with gray carpeting and a white headliner, replacing or repairing various trim elements and brightwork, and overhauling mechanical systems. Power is from a 1.8-liter inline-four mated to a four-speed manual transmission with overdrive, and additional equipment includes twin SU carburetors, 15″ steel wheels, a Blaupunkt radio, and a heater. With fewer than 1k kilometers on the refurbishment, this 1800S is now offered in Norway on dealer consignment as part of the Bjarøy Classic Collection from Autonero with refurbishment records and Norwegian registration.

The car was refurbished in Alytus, Lithuania, at Klasikinių Automobilių Servisas – a shop reportedly owned by a friend of the current owner. Work included disassembly, body repairs, repairing or replacing various trim elements, and more as depicted in nearly 150 refurbishment photographs included in the gallery below.

The cabin is trimmed in black leather with gray carpeting, and it features a Blaupunkt pushbutton radio.

The two-spoke steering wheel frames Smiths instrumentation consisting of a 200-km/h speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and vertical gauges for coolant and oil temperatures. Auxiliary readouts for fuel level and oil pressure are centrally mounted on the dashboard and joined by an analog clock. The five-digit odometer was reset during the refurbishment shows under 1k kilometers.

Mine was over $90,000 so you see why doing a car to this level requires a LOT OF PATIENCE AND GOOD LUCK.
@DeanBean You are so correct about in and out costs and returns, but this certainly deserved a bid closer to $70k than $55k. IMHO

Well just cuz you spent $70,000 on the restoration doesn't mean you're going to get $70,000 out of it. I mean that's an age-old issue with restoring cars, isn't it??

The restoration cost 70 000 USD alone!

The car is over 25 years old so it's only subject to a 2.5% duty.

I know what it cost to restore my 64 1800S to this level and I see this current bid as a steal even considering the extra import costs!!
If I was looking for an 1800 and didn't want to go through the time, uncertainty and frustration of starting from scratch, this would easily be my car of choice. There's so little to do to actually make this car as close to what it looked like in the showroom that I can't see it going at this price.

A $20K bump at this level is a bold move. He is swinging a big pair.
IMHO, this car is nice enough to support that bid, at least it would be in the USA but I don't know about the import costs: duties, tariffs, taxes, fees, whatever. Evidently, the EU market for vintage Volvos is pretty strong.

@Tutor Turtle. Not optional. Either D or J type came on every 1800 unless it was removed.
If the buyer is US, I hope they realize the collector car import tariffs currently imposed.

@seller it's been noted that the speedometer and tachometer lenses show radial cracks (photos 271 and 272), but in photo 101 there are no apparent cracks. Have new lenses been installed?
There is a toggle switch in photo 99, what does it control? Do you have the fusebox covers (photo 146). Do you have the jack and tool kit?

Gorgeous car. You don't see many that are this nice. I enjoy seeing the restoration photos. Nicely done. The undercoating looks like it was applied during restoration, it is so uniform. Interesting choice to put body colored paint over the undercoating. I like it. Flaws are few. Among those already pointed out: The rear bumper looks a little twisted up on the right side. The instrument lenses have radial cracks. Either the oil or water temperature seem out of adjustment, by the time the oil is that warm the water will be much warmer. Maybe the photo was taken after the engine had cooled down and the oil was still very warm? Maybe a driving video will clarify. It has a Lockheed style brake booster instead of a Girling, but that is actually an upgrade if it isn't a Chinese knock off. All stuff that an owner can fairly easily address address if bothered by them. I wish my '67 1800S looked this good. It is a car that anybody would be proud of.

@seller This car is simply too nice to drive. That said, I'd move the battery hold down bracket (photo 142) to the front of the battery where it is most effective. I'd add the necessary straps to secure the brake lines to the rear axle, especially the right side (photo 195). And two questions: photo 144 shows what looks like a stain/ leak below the clutch master cylinder; has that been corrected? And, the gravel deflectors on the leading edge of the rear wheel arch are missing; I understand completely if that was a conscious choice. Aside from that, this car is way too nice to drive. Great restoration.

After looking at the preponderance of photos the only detail (besides what @syblock pointed out) I see misssing on this fabulous restoration is the rubber seal around the grille surround. https://vp-autoparts.com/en/artiklar/grill-surround-1800-61-71-whardware.html

@MinutemanMike I didn't want to add just how much trouble I had with my 69S, and especially the Zenith Stromberg carbs (and the soft metal cam shaft that required replacement after 1000 miles). If I didn't use Sunoco 260 (like today's 94 octane but with lead), the car would diesel for a few minutes. When I told my father I was buying another one (the 72E), he really thought I had lost my senses, but he didn't say it quite so calmly.

One clean Swedish machine. The '67 1800S is the pinnacle of the '60's era Volvo GT especially for the U.S. export market. No side markers, spoked steering wheel, S.U's ('69 has ZS carbs). IMHO. It will be interesting watching more international buyers too. GLWTA, MmM (BRG '67 1800S "club")

I've owned an 1800 since 1969. That S was traded in for a 72 1800E, which I still own and is now undergoing a restoration back to its original Cypress green (color #110) after 27 years of being Dodge Viper Red. About 10 years ago, I bought my 64 S. After having Duane Matejka install a B-20 ported head engine with dual Webers, I drove the car for several years until it, along with my others, were swamped but not completely flooded by Hurricane Ida (Sept. 2021). It was repaired sufficiently to be drivable and solid, but as it had really needed a restoration even prior to Ida, I ventured into a year and a half restoration project. The result was an overwhelming success and I drove the car from Long Island as recently as 3 weeks ago to Wilmington, DE for the VSA 50th anniversary meet and the Hagley car show on the Dupont estate. With that introduction, I think I can say that I've been around Volvo 1800s and have an eye for what appears to be a very complete and spectacular restoration. This 67S appears similar to what I saw and experienced twice in my driving my 69S and my 72E out of the showroom and what I now feel about my restored 64S. The only details I find to nit pick about is the absence of Volvo decals on the doors and the lower dash for the heater controls, the absence of rain drain holes in the trunk corners near the tail lights and what looks like a small crush in one of the air cleaners. How they found the new top to the windshield washer bottle is beyond me as I've been looking for one to replace my yellowed used one that is very noticeable against my new bottle as it sits so obviously in the engine compartment. Perhaps the European attention to detail speaks to the quality of the finished car as my 64 was done and my 72 is being done by a mid-40's year old Polish restorer who has been sending the necessary chrome work to Poland for refinishing? I'm not really sure what makes this car so spectacular as I do know some incredible restorers here, but this one is a knockout and deserves the bidding I'm sure we'll see as this auction progresses. PS I will gladly supply the winner of this auction a pair of Volvo air filters to mate with the SU carburetors. Having been in this world for so long has allowed me to accumulate a wide variety of extra parts and this car deserves perfection in every detail. The missing decals are easily acquired in any of the Volvo parts suppliers and especially those listed in the VSA award winning magazine, which I hope the winner joins. Just go to VSA.org and sign up. If I missed any other flaws, I'm open to correction. I could have spent another hour looking for issues but nothing much can really offset this superb 1800 presentation!!! PPS The wider wheels and tires make the world of difference in handling. Smart move as the "skinny" tires look great and distinct but lose in the handling.
