Allard J2X Le Mans Re-Creation
Presentation
This alloy-bodied roadster is a re-creation of a works car produced by Allard for the 1952 24 Hours of Le Mans. Commissioned by the seller in 2016, the car was built over several years by marque specialist Dr. Jonathan Rose in the UK using a modified P-series chassis, hand-formed bodywork, and a 331ci FirePower Hemi V8. After initial assembly was completed, the car was outfitted for vintage racing by Project Heaven near Peterborough, England, using components sourced from Hot Heads Research in the US. An FIA Historic Technical Passport was issued in 2021, and the car has been driven in events such as the Goodwood Revival, Silverstone Classic, and RAC Woodcote Trophy. A timed speed of 157 mph was reportedly achieved along the Mulsanne Straight during the Le Mans Classic. Updates over the past few years have included a hydraulically actuated four-speed manual transmission, an Allard quick-change differential, and LEDA adjustable dampers. This J2X Le Mans re-creation is now offered in the UK with an FIA Historic Technical Passport and UK V5C registration.
The Le Mans variant of the J2X Competition was developed for the 1952 iteration of the endurance race, which required barchetta bodywork fully surrounding the wheels. Allard’s entries featured a forward-tilting front clamshell with covered headlights and a mesh screen over the carburetor scoops.
Dr. Jonathan Rose fabricated this car’s alloy bodywork, forming panels over a plywood buck. Tubular steel supports were added to a modified P-series chassis along with suspension components and other parts accumulated by Dr. Rose over many years.
The car is finished in green with #29 roundels that were applied for participation in the Le Mans Classic. Details include a single windscreen, a gray roll hoop, a Le Mans-style fuel filler, bullet-style side mirrors, an LED racing light, and dual exhaust outlets.
Turrino 16” alloy wire wheels are secured by two-eared spinners and wrapped in Dunlop Racing tires. The suspension incorporates a split front axle, a de Dion rear end with a Panhard rod, and LEDA adjustable dampers at all four corners. Braking is handled by hydraulic drums.
The right-hand-drive cockpit features seats trimmed in green leather. A fire-suppression system has been added along with HANS-compatible harnesses, a VBOX camera, a Racelogic lap timer, and toggle-switch controls. Wear on the upholstery can be viewed in the gallery.

Also, in Photo #30, what is the width of the seat between the chassis rail and transmission tunnel (for the drivers side). Wondering whether I would be able to squeeze in!

Wow, what a fantastic car! Can you share if the rear axle is an original Allard quickchange? What does it use for the rear inboard brakes? This car would be great for the VSCCA.

A couple of things come to mind:
First -and foremost- the car doesn't care if You can wring the very last bit out of it, but it Does 'feel the love'. I promise You. Second, Donnington is a Really deceptively complicated track ( ask me how I know ). Similar to Lime Rock, which looks like an easy venue to master, there are SO many places that make Donnington challenging. I understand the choice to let the car go. The best news is that you can hold onto the love once the car is gone. I love it, too. Cheers Mate

I'm fortunate to own a J2X Le Mans and I really enjoyed getting to see the build photos of this car. The chassis, although P derived, has been massively modified to make it as close as possible to a J2X chassis. The car is really well done and authentic in all the right places. Allards at their heart are hot rods and as a result they've received a variety of upgrades over the years...so much so that some are mechanically unrecognizable. This car being a re-creation is probably more faithful to an original Allard than many real Allards. I hope the buyer races this car as it can easily be competitive in any mid 50's sports car vintage race. Oh, and the J2X is a very good handling car...I know, I drive one! (The J2 on the other hand can be interesting)

I've never been a fan of Allard styling but I seriously like this! The Chrysler Hemi sure looks good under the bonnet. Hope it brings all of the coins you want out of it. Best of luck!

Good questions...2023 at Le Mans Classic. Project Heaven do the race prep..I LOVED AND LOVE this car but the car needs more talent to get the best out of it..and more youth..I am almost seventy..my co driver for two driver races is 20 years my junior at eg. At Donnington does 8 seconds a lap faster
