Presentation

This 1948 Tatra T87 is one of approximately 3,050 examples built between 1936 and 1950 and was purchased in a state of disrepair by its current owner from a Slovak car collection in 2010. A subsequent multiyear refurbishment that was completed in 2018 included body repairs, a repaint in metallic blue, a re-trim of the interior in tan upholstery, and overhauls of the mechanical components. Power is provided by a rear-mounted 3.0L air-cooled V8 that incorporates a magnesium alloy crankcase, finned cylinders, overhead camshafts, and hemispherical combustion chambers. Additional equipment includes a dual-throat downdraft carburetor, a four-speed manual transaxle, four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, four-wheel independent suspension with a swing-axle rear, body-color 16” wheels, a front-mounted oil cooler, and a sliding sunroof. This T87 is now offered by the seller on behalf of its owner in Košice, Slovakia, with photos from before and during the refurbishment process and Slovak registration.

Under the lead of chief engineer Hans Ledwinka, Tatra delved into the construction of streamlined luxury automobiles in the 1930s with input from fellow Tatra engineer Erich Übelacker and aerodynamics consultant and former dirigible designer Paul Jaray. The project resulted in the 1934 introduction of the T77, which was succeeded in 1936 by the lighter, more compact T87. Underpinned by unibody construction with a central beam that bifurcates at the rear, the T87’s bodywork reportedly registered a drag coefficient of 0.36. After a pause during the war, the model’s production continued until 1950 after the Tatra factory’s nationalization.

Styling incorporates an enveloped front end with triple headlights, a three-piece windshield, centrally hinged doors with recessed handles, a sliding sunroof, trafficators, rear wheel spats, and a tapered engine cover with a central fin flanked by louvers and air scoops. This example’s body was stripped to bare metal before undergoing welding repairs and a repaint in metallic blue during the refurbishment performed by the current owner’s restoration shop between 2010 and 2018.

Body-color wheels wear bright hubcaps and are wrapped in 6.50-16 Firestone Deluxe Champion tires, as is a matching spare housed in the front compartment. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes all around.

The cabin was re-trimmed during the refurbishment and features tan leatherette and Alcantara upholstery over seating for five as well as over the door panels. Additional characteristics include color-matched carpeting, roll-up windows, an ivory-color shift knob, storage pockets on the front doors and seatbacks, B-pillar coat hooks, a fold-down rear armrest, a cut-glass rear dome light, and a rear storage shelf that can be isolated from the cabin by an upholstered lift-up panel.
1948 Tatra T87 photo 6
The ivory-color banjo-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of a body-color dashboard housing a glovebox, an ashtray, and instrumentation including a 180-km/h speedometer, a clock, and gauges monitoring fuel level and oil temperature. The five-digit odometer shows approximately 6k kilometers (~3,800 miles), which is said to reflect mileage driven since completion of the refurbishment. Total mileage is unknown.

Not an issue. The haulers routinely handle such issues. They have collector cars just like us. A person would crazy to drive this to a almost anywhere unless he lived in europe.

@collins Looking at the micrscopic copies of the registration records, it looks like this Tatra 87 was last registered in 2018. That might make it difficult to drive it to an intenation shipping port. Unknowns about transporting it on a carrier to an international shipping port. As an example, I've been refused to enter Italy in an Italian registered car, that did NOT have the current tax receit attached to the upper windshield. COLLINS: shrinking 8 pages of registration documentation into ONE reproducable page is not very helpful............

It is my deeply sincere hope that (some) of today’s youngsters, and perhaps their children take a deep appreciation for the design, skill and craftsmanship of vehicles like these. “Panel beaters” like the crew who resurrected this art piece are few & far between.
You certainly won’t be 3D printing parts from composites for something like this. The significance of the “hand formed” component in these vehicle types is a Big part of what makes them so Special.
I feel privileged to have seen one of these ….

My buddy and I just drove down the West Coast from Seattle to Palm Springs in my new to me 1948 Tatra T87. About 2500 km or 1500 miles.
As most know the drive is phenomenal with Oregon being a really nice surprise at how beautiful the Pacific Ocean is there.
Once I got the tires figured out it tracked and drove really nicely. The sound of the engine is magical at start up and as you drive along the highway at 60 or so.
Obviously, it gets an insane amount of attention wherever you park. Had some vapor lock or flooding problems in hot LA traffic on the way to Palm Springs but overall the car ran beautifully and can completely keep up to today’s cars.
I owned one about 35 years ago that needed a restoration so I had never driven one (had a Tatraplan in the early 80’s in Victoria BC) and I am very excited I have this one now in Southern California. Hopefully this beautiful blue one ends up here too!

This is an absolutely unique and incredible concourse restoration. I’d love to see a museum but this car, because that’s where it belongs. I’m surprised of the wheel well and frenched light work but I can’t say it took the car in a bad direction or even far from original. VERY cool listing indeed.

My buddy and I just arrived last night to my place in La Quinta, California, near Palm Springs, in my '48 T87.
A total of 2,498 km (1,552 miles) down the west coast of the USA. First off... do that trip at least once, even in a rental. The Oregon coast is amazing. My T87 ran great except for when it got too hot in LA traffic with, I assume, vapor lock. Got home fine though.
Attracts A LOT of attention... and not just car people... everyone. It's fun to show the engine. The 'kills Nazi's' thing is overblown I believe.
With proper tires it tracks very nicely. Amazing machine, especially for its time. And that air-cooled V8 just sounds insanely wonderful! And the car is still fully usable in today's traffic. www.youarehear.app

I have moved a bunch of cars from Europe to the US, some for myself and some for other clients. This car could comfortable fit into a 20' container.
There are three elements to ocean freight:
1) inland enclosed transportation to the closest secure port...(NOT ITALY)
2) containerization and export documentation, then secure loading into the container. Final loading on vessel
3) US customs docs, EPA docs, Registration docs..Texas sounds like a document nightmare as opposed to Montana or even Virginia. We have always been able to register and title off of European registration, the customs 7501, and bill of sale.
Ocean freight these days is quite expensive compared to this time last year.
Figure about $ 2,500 european inland transportation
$ 1,500 for container loading and export doc generation
$ 3,800-4,700 to east coast USA, another $ 1,500 to West Coast
Tariffs and duties of 12.5% currently
Customs clearance, decontainerization, then delivery to your door.
Depending on your location figure $ 10,000-12,000 all in depending on stated value.
Airfreight for a car this size add about $ 22,000-24,000
These are accurate costs based on my last few moves.

Regarding drag coefficients, this is what AI had to say:
• Efficiency Gap: The Citroën SM is more aerodynamically efficient than the Tatra T87, utilizing a chopped "Kamm tail" and smooth glass surfaces to manage airflow rather than the long, teardrop rear and dorsal fin found on the Tatra.
• The "Scale Model" Discrepancy: Both manufacturers originally promoted highly optimistic figures (\(C_{d}\) 0.244 for Tatra and 0.26 for Citroën) that were later revised upward when tested with more advanced, full-scale modern wind tunnel methods.
• Era Context: Despite being less efficient than the 1970s Citroën, the Tatra's 0.36 drag coefficient was extraordinary for the 1930s—an era when most standard passenger cars had a drag coefficient exceeding 0.50.
Still an amazing CD especially compared to it's peers.

For paperwork, Texas is pickier than most other states. I have never ever imported a car from Europe and had Texas accept the paperwork and have had to get bonded titles on every car I brought from overseas. The paperwork on the recent tatra from Czechoslovakia looks like something that needs to be framed. It's so complicated and the language is beautiful. Titling in some other states may be easier. I can't speak to that but I would plan on getting a bonded title for a car like this from Slovakia. I would want the ownership documents in case anything ever came up, but Texas would not accept them as proof of ownership. The bonded title process is easy here in Texas assuming all the numbers lineup and would cost about $1000 depending on the value used for the car.

I have two tatras in the museum, sedan and a convertible. I have brought a number of cards from Europe, but two in the last six months, including a tetra from Czechoslovakia so I'm very in tune with the freight cost. I think the price mentioned here for air freight is a fraction of what it would cost, and is likely not even realistic for a car of this value. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see an air freight cost approaching $100,000. I brought one car from london and one car from Czechoslovakia in the last six months. The alpha Romeo from london ended up costing right at $23,000 which included a tariff, the 2 1/2% important duty and other charges. The Tatra from Czechoslovakia cost right at 20 as I recall and I think it did include a tariff plus the 2 1/2%. You can ignore all these quotes you get for 3000 and 5000 and $4000. They are the shipping container cost only the rest of the fees, including shipping from Czechoslovakia to the port and from the port to my front door, plus there are fees for everything you can imagine, including how long the boat has to wait to be loaded and how long the boat has to wait to be unloaded inspection fees, the list of fees is quite long. These prices did not include insurance as my cars are insured with Grundy and that insurance covers losses during shipping, including from overseas. I don't believe the current war is interrupting any of the shipping from these ports. I do have some containers coming from China that have been delayed because of the war. We are building a new shopping center with shipping containers. I'm not hard to find and can get any interested party the name of the shipping company I used. There are some that are more expensive than the ones I used.

the registration of this Tatra T87 has is a regular historic EU registration and historic car plates, you can drive it accross Europe, which the Owner has done on few occasions.
Slovakia does not have a direct internal AIT/FIA CPD-issuing organization for traveling outside Europe.
Hope this helps.

The restoration photos are excellent documentation of the car's present condition, BUT there are no found photos of the local SLOVAK registration. Can you now provide some photos or notes on the curent SLOVAK registration, please. Is it issued in with multiple languishes or only your local languish? Also, can you obtain an international CARNAIT from your local car registration bureau, for being allowed to drive the Tatra 87 across various borders without hindrance??

As the seller is a private individual and does not provide shipping or customs clearance services, these arrangements are the buyer’s responsibility.
I have been happy to try to help, but I am not a shipping expert. The figures I posted in the comments below were only rough estimates based on simple Google searches, provided for information purposes only.
Today, I requested a specific quote (Frankfurt-Los Angeles) from CFR Classic LLC. Their quoted net price for ocean shipping is USD 5,200, excluding taxes, insurance, storage fees and various customs-related charges.

Thank you for your kind words about the car! Unfortunately, I don’t have a local shipper to recommend at this time. The $40–55k figure was only a rough estimate covering shipping, insurance, import duties, customs clearance, and US registration-related costs, which can vary considerably depending on the destination and applicable requirements. Air freight could be a viable option, but I haven’t obtained a current quote yet.
Air freight from Europe to the USA for a Tatra 87 could realistically cost around $8,000–15,000 or more. Additional costs for collection, export handling, insurance, US customs clearance, terminal fees, and domestic transport could add several thousand dollars. Import duties would be extra and depend on the applicable tariff classification.

It is a torque-monster... cruises up any hill in high gear (OK, maybe third). And there's always a of bunch of people amazed to see it whenever you park it. Do you have a local shipper that could arrange AIR-FREIGHT shipment direct to the USA?? You mentioned earlier, the anticipated cost for shipment, customs, etc. would be $40-$55k. Can you break those costs down as best you can, please. AIR SHIPMENT cost has ben around $11-15k some years ago, from Frankfurt/AM to USA, as an example. Your car looks to be a great example of the Type 87.............
Oct 16, 2026 · 14:49
@collins Yes Sir. I totally agree with you. The legendary element is implied. My "horrible to drive" statement is also a bit of a poke. Any swing axle, rear engine car has handling liabilites, and any pre-war car has its nuances. Having put significant miles on our T77A, I have enjoyed every one. More fun facts. When Tatra was selling these, they claimed it would reach 90 mph. The public bawked. Tatra set up ridealongs with media and they proved the car would achieve such speeds.

@Johniwanna
That's a great story, but the historical evidence is less conclusive than the legend suggests. The Tatra 77 and Tatra 87 were indeed popular among some high-ranking German officers during the occupation of Czechoslovakia, and their rear-engine design and swing-axle suspension could make them tricky to handle at high speeds. Accidents did happen, but there is no reliable evidence that Tatras killed more German officers than the American Army did. The story is best treated as a famous automotive legend with a basis in reality, rather than an established historical fact.
Oct 15, 2026 · 15:13
Some fun facts, since I have this knocking around in my head. The T77 was followed by the T77a which was produced until 1939, approximately 167 units. The rigid backbone chassis was one of Ledwinka's early engineering marvels. Tatra is the third oldest car manufacturer in history behind Mercedes and Peugeot. The Tatra T77 is the mother/father of the VW Beetle. Ferdinand Porsche admitted to looking over Hans Ledwinka's shoulder and used, without license, several patented designs. This includes the shape of the front end, the rear engined air cooled design, and specific air cooled ducting. Tatra sued Porsche in 1939, then Germany invaded Czechoslovakia. After WW2, Porsche settled for 1,000,000 DM. The T77a had the lowest drag coefficient of any car until 2018. .021. Amazing cars. Horrible to drive. The swing axle makes the car extremely susceptible to rollover. In fact, they were known for killing more German officers than the American army. Shifting is a trick as the 9 odd feet of linkage and 16 or so connecting points will keep you on your toes. But who doesn't love a challenge right? An amazing 1938 Tatra won the Charles Chayne Engineering Excellence award at Pebble Beach in 2026. This T87 is very special. If you are a huge Porsche or VW fan, this is a subtle tip of the hat to one of the most prolific designers of all time. Ledwinka, not Porsche. :)

What a wonderful piece of automobile history! Just a beautiful automobile. The metallic blue is stunning. I have a soft spot for Tatras and Slovakia - my mother's family is from a small village at the foot of the Tatra mountains. I wonder if my grandparents ever saw one of these? Also, when I was visiting family, we visited Košice and enjoyed out time there. The main square is very nice. GLWA!

@DFWcarandtoymuseum
Thank you for your message and your legitimate concerns. I completely understand your caution, especially when dealing with a high-value international transaction. To answer your questions: No, I am not a licensed dealer, and this is indeed my first time selling a car on this platform. Because of this, I haven't used an escrow service before either, but I will certainly look into it right away. Regarding the payment security, I completely agree that we should find a secure solution. Once the bidding closes, we can look for an escrow service provider that both of us find appropriate and mutually accept. For instance, using a Slovakian attorney for escrow sounds like a viable option, given the strict regulations and oversight governing legal practices in Europe.
Oct 13, 2026 · 15:02
@seller verified services aren't offered on international transactions. Are you a licensed dealer? I notice it's your first sale here. A car like this could bring enough to give pause before wiring money, know the seller then has the car the title and the money with no recourse for the buyer. Have you used escrow before with a Slovakian attorney?

As far as we know, there were three metallic colors available, silver, blue and dark red. However we cannot confirm how close the current shade is to the original. @portraitmac
One belt drives the generator, and two are for the cooling fans. @yu4517
Yes, it is possible to convert the car to RHD, but the necessary parts would need to be sourced and purchased. The owner mentioned that he could also make the conversion, but he would only begin the work once the car is fully paid for.

For a car that was approx. $ 2,500 new... Current market estimate (2026):
Project/restoration candidate: $100,000 to $175,000
Good driver-quality car: $200,000 to $300,000
Fully restored concours-quality example: $300,000 to $450,000+
Exceptional, historically significant cars can exceed these figures at major international auctions.

Oct 12, 2026 · 11:46
@seller do you have any suggestions on how to pay for a car like this if purchased by a US citizen.? I'm more in expensive cars. I always just wire the money and hope for the best because as you can imagine the seller has the money, the car and the title yeah basically no legal recourse and you don't know anything about them. Have you used an Groth service before?

In the ‘30s a British movie production company made a forgetable futuristic, sci-fi disaster film called “the tunnel” about a tunnel linking Britain with the US that goes badly off the rails. The movie makers needed sci-fi cars to give the scenes some street cred. Unsurprisingly, they used Tatras. Compare this T87 to the Austins of the 1930s…….

An amazing restoration! It is interesting to see belts in strange places. At the front of the engine is the generator with a belt that disappears in front of the engine. I'm wondering what it connects to...there is a transaxle down there somewhere, but I doubt it connects to that. Then, at the back of the engine are two more belts, but it is not obvious what they drive. The left one might drive the oil pump, but the right remains a mystery. This whole car is a fascinating piece of engineering!

@volvoracer9- That one I drove was fully restored by an expert who owns several Tatras. He used to own a pre-war T-77 limo that was right hand drive. That one won an award at Meadowbrook a few years ago.

Many here have praised the color and it does look sharp, but surely this can't be one of the originally offered colors, right? @lewis Bah humbug. Did it ever occur to you that you might've driven a crummy, not well-maintained version of the Tatra? Jay Leno's sure ran like a top.

@danzig997 - According to Jay Leno in the video linked below, the T87 is capable of 20 mpg at 60 mph. Wikipedia puts the figure at 18.8 mpg (12.5 L/100 km). Either way, that's pretty astounding compared to the 11.8 mpg (20 L/100 km) typical of other V8's of the era (from the same article). A lot of this is due to the wind-tunnel-tested aerodynamic design. Check out the recessed door handles and that smooth underbody.

@Protracker
Importing a fully restored 1948 Tatra 87 from Slovakia to the US could cost approximately $40,000–$55,000, excluding state taxes. This estimate includes shipping, insurance, customs duties, and registration. The actual cost depends heavily on the destination state, local taxes, and inland transport distance, which can vary by thousands of miles between the East and West Coasts. Given the Tatra’s historical significance, it is worth investigating whether it qualifies for the more favorable duty treatment available to certain collectible vehicles. @Knuckles-R-Busted
Unfortunately, the car’s original color is unknown, and it was not visible when it was purchased either (photos 211-215). However, an “Authenticity Confirmation” has already been requested from the Tatra Museum in Kopřivnice, but unfortunately, it had not arrived by the time the auction started. If it arrives, it may also contain this information. @Ranchero65
Photo 158 shows an oil cooler. The sunroof is very well sealed against rain and wind, and not a single drop of rain has ever leaked through it. It has a raised perimeter that effectively channels water away. There is plenty of luggage space behind the rear seats, as shown in the photos, for example, photos 114–118. This luggage compartment can be separated from the passenger compartment. ------------------------
One additional detail: the car is equipped with a modern petrol-powered Webasto auxiliary heater.
Oct 12, 2026 · 02:17
Powered by a rear-mounted 2.9-litre air-cooled 90° overhead-cam V8 engine producing 85 horsepower, it could propel the car to nearly 100 mph (160 km/h). Despite competing against vehicles powered by engines with almost twice the displacement, it ranked among the fastest production cars of its era while delivering fuel consumption of approximately 20 L/100 km (11.8 mpg), a noteworthy achievement for its performance class.

Hi there! Just a little introduction: I’m helping a good friend of mine with the sale of his 1948 Tatra 87. He is 54 years old and works professionally as a classic car restorer. He restored this beautiful Tatra for himself, putting his professional skills, experience, and passion into bringing it back to its wonderful condition. I’m simply assisting him with the sale and helping him find the right new owner for this very special car. I’ll be more than happy to answer any questions you may have, so please don’t hesitate to get in touch. Thank you very much for the first bid — it’s greatly appreciated!

Today, do we drive rear-engine cars powered by air-cooled V8s? No we don't, so not "ahead if it's time." The one car thaat was ahead of its time is the Citroen Traction Avant which is the basis for almost every car on the road today.

@mb4design beat me to the punch. I remember the Minneapolis art museum had one of these on display in their industrial art and design section. Very cool car, I spent a lot of time analyzing it from every angle. Talented designers back then. There a number of cars that absolutely belong in art museums. The mighty Tatra is one for sure.

As a young boy, I remember seeing Skodas, Ladas, and a very occasional Tatra when touring the Czech countryside. I could tell, even at my young age, that the Tatra was the most special of them all. I don't recall ever seeing one of these, and that is a bummer since it's absolutely spectacular. GLWTA!

Beautiful car but I don't see a lot of room for "stuff" storage. The rear is full of engine and the front is full of spare tire plus a radiator looking thing (pic 158). What is that? Can't be a radiator if the engine is air cooled. The sunroof design looks years ahead of its time but I wonder about leakage. How well does it seal against wind and rain (not that it will ever see a rainy day again)?

Light years ahead of it's time! This Body Style was 1st introduced in 1936, no other automobile manufacturer in the World thought of the modern innovations like rear mounted V8 engine, 3 piece wrap around windshield as no one had the technology to produce curved glass, & the Functional Space Age Fin to divide the air pressure that was later used in Aircraft. The Innovations of this Revolutionary Automobile inspired Automobile Manufacturers throughout the World! The comprehensive restoration on this automobile is 2nd to none. This is what Buck Rogers would drive!

@Steveo570 - you can see them up close and personal much closer than Germany. The Lane Museum in Nashville TN has probably the largest collection of Tatra cars in the world, ones from pre-WWII to the 1960's when they ceased production. Some are on the main floor, some are in the vault (lower floor, and require special access to see.) It's a very impressive collection. They also may have the largest collection of DKW's - they're known for the unique and unusual vehicles in the collection.

What a beautiful and stylish Tatra, this wonderful 1948 Tatra T87 was a groundbreaking Czechoslovakian luxury fastback sedan celebrated for its avant-garde engineering, air-cooled V8 engine, and radical aerodynamics. The car's streamlined layout strongly influenced Ferdinand Porsche's design of the Volkswagen Beetle, leading to a post-war patent lawsuit that Volkswagen eventually settled out-of-court in 1965 for 1 million Deutsche Mark…..👍…@hoppy18
