27-Years-Owned 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H
Presentation
This 1966 Shelby Mustang GT350H was invoiced to the Hertz corporation in January 1966, having been specified with special Hertz wheels, a radio, and power-assisted brakes. According to the seller, the car is one of the documented Holley Le Mans-carbureted automatics from the factory, and they acquired it in 1999. A restoration was completed by John Brown of Thoroughbred Restorations in Piedmont, Oklahoma in 2023, and the car has since won three Division 2 Concours Gold awards at the 2023 Indiana SAAC Fall Classic, the 2024 MCA 60th Anniversary of the Mustang, and SAAC-49 in 2024. This GT350H is now offered with a copy of the original invoice, a copy of the SAAC registry entry, a National Shelby Registry certificate, the owner’s manual, and a Texas title in the seller’s name.
Approximately 1,000 GT350H examples were produced as part of a partnership between Ford and the Hertz car rental company. This example is finished in Raven Black (A), and exterior details include GT350 side stripes, a driver-side mirror, and chrome bumpers.
A restoration was completed by John Brown of Thoroughbred Restorations in Piedmont, Oklahoma in 2023, with input provided by Ben Wagner, Brian Littlefield, Jim Wicks, and Bob Gaines.
Chrome-plated 14″ Magnum wheels are mounted with Goodyear Blue Streak tires. GT350s were factory-equipped with Kelsey-Hayes front disc brakes as well as larger rear drums than standard Mustangs, and additional Shelby modifications included revised front suspension geometry, quick-steer idler and pitman arms, stiffer springs, a larger front sway bar, and rear traction bars. This example was specified with a brake booster.
The cabin features low-back bucket seats trimmed in Bback vinyl, and interior appointments include rear seat lap belts and an optional AM radio.
The simulated wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a 140-mph speedometer flanked by an ammeter as well as fuel-level, oil-pressure, and coolant-temperature gauges. The five-digit odometer shows under 89k miles, fewer than 50 miles of which were added under current ownership.

I guess I have a different way of looking at it. Without me and the restoration help I had, there wood be no awards. When I buy another Shelby and I want it to have awards, I will have it judged. I'm sure SAAC and MCA will provide documentation of the awards if needed.

Unbelievable. But I have to ask, doesn't a high end restoration require trim taken off when repainting? Picture #34 shows otherwise.

As a non expert simple collector I would love to hear some expert input on the effect on value on this vehicle if it 1. If it didn’t have the awards listed? and 2. It having a non original engine? Thank you!
Oct 22, 2026 · 18:29
@shelby711 as you can see from my bidding, I am a serious player for this car. I would really like a definite yes or no if the awards will go with the vehicle? Realizing they were handed to you, however it is the vehicle that earned them. These awards are a significant part of the valuation of this vehicle. I’m sure you have included them in the description being aware they boost the value of the car. Thank you in advance.

With regards to engines, yes you can have a concours car with a motor that has been replaced. In Division 2 of the judging, reproduction and replacement parts (even engines) are acceptable as long as they are the same as the oem parts. Generally speaking specific casting dates are not checked.
I like original parts as much as anyone, but the belief that you can identify an original engine at this time is incorrect, unless you know the complete history of the vehicle
In Division 1 the expectation is the engine is original, but again proving it is another matter.
Concours cars are such a small sliver of the hobby its not worth arguing about. Division 1 cars are super duper rare. Probably like 2% of all concours cars.

Agree with @Coralsnake. I can speak with authority that MCA does not and will not endorse brands. Individual judges may have suggestions concerning brands, that is their personal opinion and not MCA's. For thoroughbred cars, parts need to be Ford production line items. Even service replacement parts can be wrong.

My team and I had the opportunity to judge this car twice. The restoration is of high quality, which is typical for the shop that performed the work. What made this restoration different from other concours restorations are the parts and the owners involvement. The owner has been collecting NOS/OEM parts for this car during his extended ownership. Some of the parts on this car are very hard to find or are longer available. Along with the parts and the owners participation, the result was producing a highly acurate and valued concours restoration.

Division 1 and Division 2 are completely different . Division 1 parts have to be assembly line correct, no reproduction parts. In Division 2 the more original parts the better. Reproduction parts must be approved by SAAC and MCA is my understanding. The paint is single stage as it should be.

Hipo 289 C-4 automatic transmission is a rare find if original. The valving changed the shift points from 4200 rpm to close to 6000 rpm. Nearly all were rebuilt to the ordinary parts, valving was changed. So for this car to have the original valving is extraordinary. Not saying anything about the unit installed but it separates the “ men from the boys “ in this application. The proof is in the actual drive. I’m enthusiastic for this true automatic Hipo!

I know little history on the car. Some work had been done before my ownership. I too assumed the car had some track time because of the roll bar but I can find no documentation. I believe there was some partial floor pan work done and the traction bar brackets where ground and rewelded because of the welds cracking. When I received the car it was white with blue stripes but had been painted several times. But I did find black and gold paint which has been documented by SAAC as the correct color. The brake ducts are correct with the proper rivits

@shelby711 In a previous post I asked about replacement sheet metal and if you could address that. As pointed out, the passenger side override bracket appears to be a replacement, and possibly driver’s side too indicating possible floor pan replacement? The wheel well housing shows the hole for the brake cooling duct but no rivet holes that may be covered by undercoating or may indicate replacement? I’ve seen mentioned that the car was previously green and the roll bar indicates it was tracked - do you or other previous owners have photos of the car pre restoration? Has it been involved in any accidents? I did see a post online that you mentioned that the quarter panels are nos replacements so are there other areas that you can confirm as well? Thank you.

This is absolutely perfection! At the first Dearborn SAAC convention (#5) my wife and I were selling “Cobra, wrap your as in something fast” t-shirts to help pay for our trip. A guy there had a ‘66 Hertz car that he just restored. I had ask him what he would take for the car and his reply was $6000. I told him he was “nuts”. In Verona, WI in 2003ish a guy had one for $40k and I didn’t buy that one because it had a bent, left front frame rail, although it was restored. That same seller (Rob, look me up!) offered me two other black Hertz cars years later that needed restorations. Boy, was I dumb! Now I just have a Hertz 1/18 model. Sad. This car is in my opinion, the best looking 1966 GT350. Nothing compares. Seller, I hope you get top dollar, but you will at times regret selling

@shelby711 kudos for showing the restoration photos. Do you have an estimate as to what sheet metal has been replaced, i.e. photo 183 PS wheel housing? I would also guess that the PS interior override bracket appears to also be a replacement. They do appear to be welded on the rear side which I don’t believe the factory did. This car does seem to fall into the range of axle limiting cables - do you have photos of those? As mentioned in the text, it does have a replacement engine. Is the transmission original and if so, do you have a photo of the C servo cap on the side? Beautiful car and GLWTA.

@flush Black / Gold does not command a higher (or lower) price While they are most assuredly the iconic Hertz colors, there are many people who would prefer the other, much rarer colors. My fav is gold over white but with a rental sometimes you got to take what you get if the right car (this one) comes along. I'll take any of the colors.

It comes down to how an owner wants to enjoy their car. Nothing wrong with the imperfections by Shelby Assembly line back on the car today or have the stripes perfect to a Roadster Show type setting. It just comes down to what is right or wrong in the eyes of the beholder. In this case, SAAC or MCA concours is how the owner wanted to restore the car to.
