Presentation

This 1958 Porsche 356A Speedster was modified with four-wheel disc brakes and wider 15″ wheels for autocross events in the 1970s and reportedly sat idle from the early 1990s until 2007. It subsequently received restoration work conducted by Ray Morgan of Vintage Motorcar Restorations in Atlanta, and won a number of awards in 2009 and 2010 before being purchased by the seller in 2018. The car is powered by a replacement 1.6-liter flat-four paired with a four-speed manual transaxle and is finished in Silver Metallic with a black soft top over black leatherette. This Speedster is now offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the owner’s manual, service records, a car cover, a tool kit, and New York registration in the seller’s name.

This body came finished from the factory in Silver Metallic (608) and was repainted during the aforementioned restoration. A replacement nose section was installed at that time, and the floors, longitudinals, rocker panels, and jack spurs were replaced. Features include a removable black canvas soft top, a driver-side mirror, removable side curtains, a tonneau cover, and body-color bumpers.

The 15″ ventilated steel wheels wear chrome hubcaps and are mounted with Vredestein tires. Four-wheel disc brakes and wider wheels were installed in the 1970s.

The fixed-back bucket seats were reupholstered in black leatherette and replacement charcoal carpets were installed.

The seller notes that the replacement steering wheel is a Porsche unit, which frames Carrera-spec instrumentation that was rebuilt, including a central 6k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge monitoring oil temperature and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 2k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership. The seller states the mileage is not accurate, and total mileage is unknown.

The replacement 1.6-liter 616/1 flat-four was sourced from a 1957 356A and rebuilt in 2009. A replacement wiring harness is also said to have been installed at that time.

I am seeing fairly negative comments about this car but any car that has a full on concours quality restoration is perfect in itself but not original, even if it does have original versus upgraded or non-original parts. I did research and I believe the last time this car sold it before this owner it sold for $270,000.00 dollars. Good luck to the owner , I know I can't afford it, I hope he gets a good last 2 minute bid run.

It’s a very lovely car. No question about that. But it is not a concours-quality car, as that term is defined – i.e., perfection in every detail. No real concours event that I am familiar with -- and I have participated in a few -- would award first place to a car that doesn’t have its original USA bumpers, that has a replacement engine and transmission, replacement seats, and later disc brakes. Also, later tool kit and jack. GLWTA

@Gtb1 Thank you, she is a beauty. I have never taken my car to any Concours. Not really my thing. It was all Concours Ray participated in after the renovation in 2009. I am not sure you know Ray Moran, but he is a pro and the car has been taken good care of since and is still in perfect condition.

How long has it been since it won a Concours event? How is the paint holding up now (addressing Al Cantara’s concerns)? What class would it compete in with a replacement engine and transmission? She’s a beauty!

@legendora The car was painted in red when Ray Morgan bought the car in 2007 and before he started the two year total restoration.

The car was red at one time from the resto photo. Seems strange the interior under the carpet was also painted?? Unusual unless it was fully once restored in red before. Any history on this?

The story about my Porsche 356A Speedster, which I have from Ray Morgan (Vintage Motorcar Restauration) who made the painstakingly total restoration soon after he bought the car in 2007.
The car belonged to a friend of Rays from the Pensacola area, and Ray had known the car since the early 1970’s. The car is told to originally come from Louisiana, maybe Baton.
The friend Ray bought the car from was Jack Wells, avid in autocross, who bought the Speedster for competition. Both Jack and his wife, Francine, drove the car in competitive events in the early 1970’s. I have attached a few pictures.
By 2007, Wells no longer drove the Speedster. It was offered for sale where it moved to Georgia under the ownership of Ray Morgan. Ray began the +1,000 hours total restoration of the car at his company, VMR. The project is fully documented over a two-year period. The shop charges for the renovation when it was finished in 2009 was $140K. Not sure about today's value but probably double that.
Concours Competition during Ray Morgan’s ownership:
Atlanta Region Porsche Club Event: Won division & People’s Choice overall
Hilton Head Island Concours and Car Club Jamboree: Won Overall Peoples’s Choice (Of the more than 200 cars shown).
Eurofest in Greenville: Won best Porsche
The National Porsche Club Parade annually offered Ray Morgan a chance to gain national recognition: Of the possible 235 points the car was awarded perfect scores for exterior, interior, and storage. A deduction for an unseen oil drip in the engine compartment reduced the score slightly from perfect yet the highest raw score for class entered.
The car has never been beaten at a Concours event.

@frankcheistensen- Thanks again for your response it is a very attractive car, I have always thought the German racing silver exterior combined with the black leatherette interior has always been the best look for any 356- all business!

@dguyton, I unfortunately don't have a copy of the Kardex that could show if the car was originally sold by Brundafe Motors in Jacksonville.

@frankchristensen- Thanks for the quick response! Sorry for my delay in responding. I know that Restoration Design sells the heater/defrost tubes and they're only about $350.00 each, but getting them inside the longitudinals and welding them exactly in place would be like trying to get toothpaste back in the tube. I guess this really should be left alone because the restoration is so nice! With the car being from Pensacola, do you have a copy of the Kardex that would tell if this was originally sold by Brundage Motors in Jacksonville?

dguyton, Ray Morgan of Vintage Motorcar Restorations in Atlanta tells me that the heater tubes were already cut off when he renovated the car. It came from Pensacola and you don’t need heat there.

I noticed the heat and defrost system is incomplete. Are the air gate valves and associated hardware/cabling still with the car although not installed? Did the hookup tubes going to the longitudinal plenums just get eliminated or were they just gone during the restoration?

Looks great in understated silver over black. Approximately 16 year old restoration and driven about 2,200 miles. Photos 209-211 show the body before paint. Compound curves and gaps of 356 panels are difficult to get right. Photos 209-211 show considerable body filler that tends to shrink (under the paint) over time with flaws generally becoming noticeable after 10-15 years. Silver hides such flaws well. Paint looks good in the photos but difficult to evaluate. Paint meter readings tell the story best. Nevertheless, looks great and should do well here.

Good evening,
This speedster is only nine numbers after mine. Fun to think that aleast three cars, that most likely sat near each other at the factory, still exist.

Ricsu7004, years ago all the information was provided if you actually had the car or not. Just send in the vin and $100 and it came back in about a month. Due to concerns about altering engine numbers they will now verify the numbers if you provide them. Sign of the times.

How can you have a Porsche COA when the original engine is gone ?

wow427, I think they are referring to the two small switches above the gauges. They were used to turn on the fuel pumps for a four cam engine. Note that the knobs have all been changed from beige to black, a common “upgrade “ back in the day. KTF

euroman, just looks like it didn’t get connected. This car is just 164 cars after mine but has some differences on the rear bulkhead to fit the improved 741 transmission in place. The heater tubes have been eliminated where they entered the chassis and there’s an extra horizontal panel inside with two chrome luggage tie downs mounted. I’m not sure what that is for but the disc brakes are certainly an upgrade. Certainly looks to be quality work. KTF
