This 1972 Maserati Ghibli is one of 1,170 coupes manufactured during six years of production and is among approximately 425 examples built with power from a 4.9-liter quad-cam V8. Chassis 1954 was imported to the US via Europe following the current owner’s purchase in 2026. The car is finished in metallic maroon and features a ZF five-speed manual transmission, quadruple Weber carburetors, servo-assisted disc brakes, 15” Campagnolo alloy wheels, and power-assisted steering. Inside, bucket seats trimmed in black leather are accompanied by power windows, air conditioning, and a Becker Monza radio. This Tipo AM115/49 is now offered on dealer consignment with a tool roll and a Texas title.

The Ghibli was introduced at the 1966 Turin Motor Show with steel bodywork styled by Giorgetto Giugiaro during his time with Carrozzeria Ghia. Design elements evolved through the beginning stages of the model’s production, and this example features round-edge headlight covers, fog lamps, low-mounted clear front turn signals, dual hood vents, bright rear bumper guards, door-mounted side mirrors, and dual ANSA exhaust finishers. The body is finished in metallic maroon with gold pinstripes, and paint chips are visible.
Campagnolo 15″ alloy wheels wear simulated octagonal knock-offs and are wrapped in 215/70 Pirelli P4000 tires. A matching spare wheel is stowed beneath the trunk floor. Stopping is handled by servo-assisted ventilated discs at each corner, and steering is also power-assisted.
The cabin houses bucket seats trimmed in black leather that extends to the dash, center console, and door panels. Black “mousehair” trim adorns the upper dash, while black carpets line the floors and rear cargo area. Features include power windows, lap belts, a Becker Monza push-button radio, and air conditioning, the latter of which was converted to utilize R134a refrigerant. Creasing is present on both seats.
The wood-rimmed F.I.V. steering wheel is mounted on a four-way adjustable column ahead of Veglia Borletti instrumentation that includes a 300-km/h speedometer, a tachometer with a 5,500-rpm redline, and an oil pressure gauge. Instruments in the center of the dash include a clock, an ammeter, and gauges monitoring coolant temperature, oil temperature, and fuel level. The five-digit odometer shows 49k kilometers (~30k miles), approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership.
The SS variant’s 4.9-liter V8 is a higher-displacement evolution of the standard Ghibli’s powerplant and was factory rated at 335 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 355 lb-ft of torque at 4k rpm. Features include an aluminum block, aluminum cylinder heads with dual overhead camshafts on each cylinder bank, dry-sump lubrication, and quadruple Weber carburetors.

I own both a Ghibli and a Daytona and although I really like the Daytona the Ghibli is my go to car for long drives or if I anticipate stop and go traffic. Both cars have beautiful lines. The Ghibli is more reliable and more user friendly. The steering wheel can be adjusted up/down and the seat back is adjustable. No such luck on the Daytona. This car has power steering while the Daytona feels like a truck at slow speed.
The Maserati V8 has tons of low end torque while the V12 Ferrari needs to be rev-ed up to get power. In the real world the Ghibli is a delight to drive. I've taken mine on three 1,600 miles drives.

A 4.9 has the low end torque. It’s a great car to go for a quick cruise in or to cover lots of highway miles at a fast pace. I’ve driven ours hard enough to think it’s plenty fast but it doesn’t like the revs as much as the 4.7 does. That being said I had no problem keeping up with Jochen Mass in a series 1 E-type over a mountain pass in the Austrian Alps on a rally in ours. He probably wasn’t trying but it was fun nonetheless. Glad I have a video of that drive, may he rest in peace.

On the 4.7 / 4.9 discussion, here's what respected Maserati authority Ivan Ruiz wrote in his Ghibli guide:
"My preference: This might come as a surprise, but my vote goes out to the 4.7 li-
ter engine when it is the later (single spark plug) style. The 4.9 liter engines have
the tendency of developing cracks on the crankshaft. A friend recently took the
engine of his SS apart as part of a restoration and found the crank had a nasty
crack which made it unusable. Luckily I had an extra 4.9 liter crank but these are
becoming quite hard to find. I am not exactly sure why this happens primarily on
the 4.9 crankshafts but cracks on the 4.7 liter engine crankshafts rarely occur. The

A quad-cam 4.9 Ghibli SS with a tool roll and a Texas title is the kind of thing that makes you want to fake a car emergency just to have an excuse to drive it fast. One of 425 with this engine, and the bidding is currently priced like it's one of 4,250. Somebody's about to steal an Italian V8 GT car.

Bidding on this is a total Joke! A Porsche from this period, despite the thousands available, would be bringing more money. This is one of the most beautiful cars ever made and with the preferred 4.9 engine. All it is missing is that it is not a convertible.

Such a gorgeous design. I am a little surprised they decided to run an old school live axle on leaf springs this late, but I guess this set up might take up less room than a more advanced IRS, thereby allowing the styling to look as lithe as it does.

Obviously - I should have bought one of these.
This coupe design has been somewhat overlooked in the pantheon of great coupes - but it certainly qualifies - its beautiful.

Wow that blue 69 that sold for $207,000 Euro with photos #27 & #28 as example having straight mirror reflection lines off the bricks is what makes these Ghibli's over a Ferrari any day being a Ghibli as number one in my book. The best produced Maserati body profiles and lines combination the Ghibli's.

@Zorglub yes, I’m aware of that. If I recall correctly the Aston has a slightly longer 5th gear than the Ghibli, which I wouldn’t mind having. Although the Ghibli does just fine RPM-wise cruising comfortably at around 100mph/160kph, speaking from personal experience. The throw is long either way. The Khamsin in comparison you can almost shift with just your wrist.

The current bid doesn't even cover the metal and bodywork I've put into mine. If you're thinking about bidding on this, go for it, it's a steal. Being near the end of my own restoration, I can tell you this is an incredible bargain. I keep spending the money simply because it's one of the most stunning cars of the era. They need to be on the road!

One thing of note that always surprises me about the Ghibli is how old it feels compared to the Khamsin or the Bora. My uncle jokingly refers to it as "the truck" because the shifter throw is so incredibly long. The interior on this one seems to be in very nice condition. Hope this gets the attention it deserves.

As to Giugiaro's best work.... in 2003, Giugiaro was invited to Pebble Beach to judge the Giugiaro class that they had that year. I'm pretty sure a Ghibli won that class, not surprising as he confided that it was his favorite of all his designs.

The US is a truly terrible market for Maseratis. Seemingly nobody cares for these amazing cars. I've been driving my uncle's Ghibli SS for 24 years now and every time I get into it and take it for a drive, it's a religious experience. I will add that my initial thought on the VIN plate stamping was the same but I went to the garage to check on ours, which is a confirmed SS and has the same indentation on the VIN plate. I'm not saying this is definitive proof but at this price, even a 4.7 would be a steal. This car looks great, GLWTA!

Had one of these silver w/ red leather! Great sounding engine when it started & when I put my foot in it! Very stiff legged ride my race shop spent some time getting the shocks reworked to soften the initial movement which really changed the car still very good at very high speed. The FL super smooth highways invited really high speed runs on

I had AM115-870, I wonder where that car is now. It was a grey market import into the US, a 4.7L. Blue metallic over a terracotta interior. These are beasts, brawny cars, mine didn't have power steering, the clutch was very heavy. I sold it in the 1990s to a guy in Maryland, I suspect he didn't keep it long.

I can understand your frustration with the Classiche process, but you do not need Classiche certification for the level of information that you are looking for. Production details, i.e. chassis and engine numbers, production date, equipment and other information on maintained in the Maserati Historical Archive. You can go the Archive website and enter the Chassis number to find out if the information is available in the Maserati Archives. Typically, there are three levels of detail information that are available, each level is about 1,000 Euros. You only need the basic level of information. @tcbob11 More than two attempts were made to obtain a certificate of origin or original build sheet from Maserati with one of the replies taking several weeks and this is the answer we got multiple times from Maserati S.p.A even though we specified more than once we only really wanted a build configuration sheet or certificate of origin not necessarily a full classiche.

It is possible that the photo in the Maserati Ghibli Registry for AM115.49.1954 is of another Ghibli, but the Registry photo shows a Ghibli with Borrani wheels and not the Campagnolo wheels on the auction car. The wheel hub mountings for the two wheel types are quite different and not easily interchangeable. The build configuation for vintage Maserati cars are easily obtained and, as others have noted, would be helpful to the seller and potential buyers.

classic.com reports 6 Ghibli SS public auction sales within the last 12 months. Only two sold for more than $200k, both in October 2025. The subject car was the lowest priced car of the six and the only car under $100k.

Looking at this car I have my doubts that it left the factory as a Ghibli SS for a number of reasons. All Ghibli SS models had 49 stamped on the chassis plate and this one does not have that indication. Secondly, the vin tag in the engine bay appears to have been re stamped 49 while in place on the car which would not have been the case with a factory issued vin tag which would have been stamped on a hard bench surface producing even and consistent font and impressions on the aluminum blank. Other locations that would identify the SS model would be of course the engine stamping at the left rear of the motor which would in this case have the number AM115/49 1954; a SS plaque riveted to the block at the water pump area with the motor number and SS designation. There are no photos of these areas in the listing , but if they were present on the car then that would clarify things. As far as the air cleaner, only the US models had the flat top with 6 screws on the SS models, the euro models had the same air cleaner for both the 4.7 and 4.9. One other indication is that the SS model had the engine number with SS stamped on the underside of the engine mounts and although is very difficult to see in the listing photos, but it does not seem to appear in the photos of the underside of the motor. Just my impressions and experience, and of course I could be completely wrong! I own a Ghibli SS coupe as well.

@zzgs look closely at the tag on photo 203. you will see the /4.9 although it looks a little sketchy. Note I am by no means an expert in Maserati vin tags. @BlueChipCar, there are a couple other locations on the Ghibli that would show the SS designation. Can you photograph those?

Quite possibly the most beautiful Italian Grand Touring Coupe of the late '60s early '70s. The Giorgetto Giugiaro design looks sophisticated and sexy from every angle, IMHO. The only loser in the Ghibli debut was the nearly synchronous debut of the Mistral which, while very good looking car, was just completely overshadowed by the Ghibli. It took a couple of decades for the Mistral to be recognized as the very worthy car it was.
Side Note: I think the first time I saw a Ghibli was when one was featured on the old Odd Couple TV show. The owner of a Chinese restaurant had it and conned Oscar into investing in the restaurant so he could afford one too. Well, the restaurant went bust, Oscar lost his money, but the car's beautiful lines were branded in my brain... GLWTA!

I owned a beautiful 4.7 Spyder, 5 spd. Great driver but the belt system for the AC, PS, and accessories was a nightmare. Plus the water pump cable drive was a terrible design, but at least when running, it was great not to mention beautiful. I have a Ferari Daytona Coupe and the Maser was a better driving road car.

@Mrtiticus I feel your pain but yes, you know you made the right decision. I got mine in the early 80's and it was very reliable and great on long drives. My only problem with the car was it was afraid of water. If you drove it through standing water, the air filter filled with water and the car stalled out. A beautiful and wonderful car.

I owned a 1970 Ghibli SS for several years. It was my first classic car, and I bought it for $36,500. One day, it was running rough, and so I wanted to bring it to my mechanic in CT. I had my wife follow me just in case it broke down. At the time, she was 8 months pregnant with our second. Of course the car broke down 2 miles short of our destination. And then a driving rainstorm started as she was guiding cars around my broken down Ghibli. After we were towed to the shop by my mechanic, she gave me the ultimatum: it was her or the car. Our 30th anniversary is coming up, and our son turned 25 this summer. I miss my Ghibli terribly.
