1.6L-Powered 1960 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia Coupe
Presentation
This 1960 Volkswagen Karmann Ghia coupe was repainted in green and retrofitted with an air-cooled 1.6L flat-four and a 12-volt electrical system by its previous owner, who is said to have kept the car in storage for over four decades before its 2023 acquisition by the seller. Equipment includes a four-speed manual transaxle, a vented decklid, pop-out rear quarter windows, steel 15″ wheels, a vintage-style aftermarket multimedia stereo, and a cabin heater. Inside, the front bucket seats and the rear bench seat are trimmed in green vinyl, and the headliner, door panels, carpets, window seals, and window regulators were replaced. According to the seller, additional work under current ownership included replacing the clutch, starter motor, fuel pump, exhaust muffler, heater boxes, wheel bearings, and drum brake wheel cylinders. This Karmann Ghia is offered with a Wisconsin title in the seller’s name that describes the car as a 1959 model.

This Karmann Ghia is offered with a Wisconsin title in the seller’s name that describes the car as a 1959 model.
The car was repainted green circa 1974, and exterior details include a driver-side mirror, a vented decklid, pop-out rear quarter windows, and bright bumpers with overriders. A pair of replacement horns was installed under current ownership, though the seller states that the horn relay requires replacement. A blemish is visible near the left-rear taillight.
Steel 15″ wheels wearing bright dog dish hubcaps are wrapped in older tires. Stopping power is provided by drum brakes at each corner. The seller tells us that work since 2023 involved replacing the wheel bearings and drum brake wheel cylinders.
The bucket seats and the rear bench seat are upholstered in green vinyl. The body-color dashboard houses a vintage-style aftermarket stereo with USB connectivity, and the seller states that work under current ownership included replacing the window seals, window regulators, and sun visors as well as installing a replacement TMI headliner, seat foam, door panels, and carpets.
The two-spoke steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 90-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and a fuel-level gauge. The five-digit odometer shows 95k miles and is inaccurate according to the seller, who estimates having driven the car 1k miles under their ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The retrofitted air-cooled 1.6L flat-four was installed under previous ownership, at which time the electrical system was converted to 12-volt operation. Power is sent to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transaxle. According to the seller, work under current ownership involved replacing the carburetor, clutch, starter motor, fuel pump, exhaust muffler, and heater boxes.

@nadergholi — Thanks, those are very helpful, and reassuring. Earlier photos were challenging to accurately interpret. Perhaps a door slightly ajar or camera angle could've caused the uncertainty.

I don't believe my early question about misalignments was ever answered.
If there are indeed misalignments, I wonder if those are attributable to maladjustments OR could be indicative of some known/unknown previous body damage.

@jal78 that's definitely an aftermarket dash pad. It looks like it might be one of the bendable foam ones, not the rigid glass action ones. '60 should've had a separate plastic speaker grill and ribbed dash pad. The perforated "grill" wasn't introduced until '65 IIRC.
The engine lid looks like it's from a '70-74 Ghia. No shots of the underside of the lid, but from above you can see the cutout in the metal tray for the plastic rain tray. Also the line-through VW badge wasn't introduced until '66. Before that was the smaller underline VW badge that '60 would've had.
Looks like L346 Mango Green, a great color! The nose appears undamaged as well, which is always a plus.

Is the dash pad made for this car? The replacement dash pad is missing the defrost vent cut outs so no defrosting or defogging of the windshield. Also the provisions for the passenger side grab handle that is usually on the dash is missing.

Drove in the rain without running the wipers; do they work?
Horns just need a relay, why not fix them before the sale?
Spare tire? Photo of all extra parts would be appreciated.
What is photo 17 trying to show?
Was the blemish touched up after the drive but before the photos? If so, is there extra paint?
