Presentation

This Ferrari 250 GTO re-creation was constructed beginning in 1985 by its current owner at his restoration shop, Badsaddle Stables in Northamptonshire, England, using the shortened chassis of a right-hand-drive 1978 Ferrari 400i and a widened replica aluminum body sourced from Eurospares. The car was completed over the course of approximately seven years with power from a 4.4-liter 365 GT4 four-cam Colombo V12 and has since been driven regularly on the road, including a tour of Europe, alongside occasional club races and hillclimbs in the UK and abroad. In 2009, it was fitted with a 5.75-liter F133E V12 that was sourced from a Ferrari 575M and modified with Jenvey individual throttle bodies, a custom cast intake manifold, custom-fabricated exhaust manifolds, and a DTAFast sequential ECU. Additional modifications added at that time included a Ferrari 550 six-speed manual transaxle, disc brakes incorporating Wilwood calipers and rotors with adjustable bias, adjustable coilover shock absorbers, Borrani competition wire wheels accommodated by fender flares, and a foam-filled aluminum fuel tank. Finished in red, the car also features a transparent Perspex engine bulge, fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather, and a Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel. This 575M-powered 250 GTO re-creation is now offered in Bicester, England, at no reserve on dealer consignment by Sports Purpose, a BaT Local Partner, with build photos, invoices, and V5C registration.

The 250 GTO was developed in 1961 as Ferrari’s competition department sought to address the aerodynamic shortcomings of the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta for the approaching 1962 FIA International Championship for GT manufacturers. Initial design of the model began under the lead of Giotto Bizzarrini, whose 1961 firing left the remainder of styling and eventual construction to Scaglietti. Each with distinct bodywork details, 36 examples of the original 250 GTO, or Gran Turismo Omologato, were built between 1962 and 1964 to lead Ferrari to three consecutive International Championship for GT Manufacturers titles.

This re-creation’s aluminum body is said to have been widened by 2” on each side to accommodate the wider track of a 400i oval-tube frame that was shortened to match the 250 GTO model’s 2,400mm wheelbase and used as the base for construction of a 250 GTO-style spaceframe. According to the selling dealer, the body was purchased by the owner from Eurospares, which claimed at the time that it was built by Scaglietti. Previously finished in yellow, the car was repainted in red approximately six months ago. Features include faired-in headlights, rectangular fog lamps, three D-shaped nose inlets, a transparent Perspex hood bulge providing a view of the intake trumpets, triple angled fender vents, a driver-side mirror, flared rear fenders, vents behind the rear wheels, rear-window ventilation scoop, a rear spoiler, and quad exhaust outlets.

Silver-painted Borrani wire wheels with polished lips measure 15×7.5″ up front and 15×9″ at the rear and are secured by three-eared knock-offs. Avon tires measure 245/60 and 275/55 at front and rear, respectively. The suspension components and hubs are said to have been sourced from a Ferrari 365 GT4, and dampening has been updated with adjustable coilover shock absorbers. Stopping is handled by Wilwood disc brakes with adjustable bias.

The right-hand-drive cockpit houses a pair of fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather with matching quilted upholstery over the center tunnel. Additional features include blue Willans harnesses, a gated shifter, and a fire suppression system.

The Nardi wood-rimmed steering wheel sits ahead of Veglia instrumentation including a central tachometer with an 8k-rpm redline flanked by gauges monitoring coolant temperature, fuel pressure, fuel level, oil pressure, and oil temperature. A 180-mph Veglia Borletti speedometer is situated to the driver’s left, but is not connected. The odometer shows 33k miles, and according to the selling dealer mileage since the build is estimated at 18k miles.

@piersg , thank you, we drove it this morning for some more video footage though I didn't do any donuts despite the owner encouraging me too! @Muybenno , we do not have photos of the repaint I'm afraid but it looks good in the flesh, no runs, mask lines or bubbling that I can see. On the import duty, I think 15% is possible yes if you import it on the chassis number to the USA though application of the final 2.5% duty has been inconsistent from what I have heard.

@meteor1955 - 575M engine is worth about $20k. MAYBE $50k number with the 6sp transaxle as well as the ecu, and all the custom parts that the seller built to run the ITBs. But, as you alluded to, that's fairly inconsequential in the overall pricing of this vehicle.

@touchyu2 It's a 575M engine. Maybe worth about $50K. Even thought this car is a pastiche, it is a well done one, and a "couple $100K bid" would get you nowhere near a win of this auction.

Fantastic car. Duties 12.5 plus 2.5 custom so just add 15% to total for an Italian origin import. Shipping totals between 8k-30k USD usually depending on ocean freight vs few types of planes

@Sports Purpose. That’s how to do a driving video. Superb presentation, brilliant car, deserves every penny you can get. Demonstrates how well the car has been built, although maybe a little pricey on tyres. I have a semi lightweight Etype, and you have encouraged me to be more of a hooligan!

We expect this car to appeal to buyers outside the UK, including in Europe and the USA and while we would argue RHD is no issue in countries that drive on the wrong side of the road ;-) , the owner’s business, Project Heaven, has put together the document below outlining the work involved in converting the car to LHD. The conversion would cost £25,000 plus VAT if applicable, take 4 to 6 weeks, and can be completed before delivery. We’re also very happy to help with shipping. As a guide, shipping to the USA would cost between £5,000 and £10,000 depending on the arrangement and destination and import duty into the USA is currently around 12.5%. Please get in touch with us directly if you’d like an individual quote.

@sixtyvalve. Maybe it’s a recreation of one of the eight RHD cars and it was built in Great Britain. RHD not uncommon on European race cars anyway as most circuits are clockwise. The early Ferrari race transporters were RHD for a similar reason. Race driver to judge a right hand apex better and lorry driver to not put three 375 F1s at the bottom of an Alpine pass.

The principle value of this creation is the 12 cylinder engine wich is pretty old and of unknown but likely high miles? I for one will not consider bidding without a compression and leakdown on the engine and some reading on the oil pressure at various revs and at steady speed? Bluntly there is not near enough here to be expected to put up a couple $100k bid?

Anyone else think Jim Rockford w/ the 'Reverse E-brake 180° to Drive' J-turn at the 5:08 mark? What an unbelievable opportunity to acquire a one-of-a-kind build!

So, 6 years ago, it was for sale for 500,000GBP. Any guesses on hammer price?

RHD makes perfect sense when the builder planned to (and did) use the car in the UK. It would be an issue for me when passing on narrow two lane roads, you know, the fun kind of roads. 600 hp does cure a lot of ills, maybe even the steering wheel on the "wrong" side. The 575 swap is surely novel as is the 400 base. So a strong performer with some unusual choices, but still 100% Ferrari. Lots to love here. If you just want a fast car, maybe a Datsun with a body kit would be more to your liking. How does 8.8 @ 160 in the quarter sound? https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=zwpPTU9acOQ&pp=ygUkRmVycmFyaSBkcmFnIHJhY2UgdHdpbiB0dXJibyAyNTAgZ3Rv

@happiesttrees - It's in the video. Wheelbase is the same as an original. Track is the same as the Ferrari 400 and the overall width is 4 inches wider than an original GTO...

Sixtyvalve - I drive my RHD skyline in the US quite regularly. Zero issues. And David Lee just paid $33M for a RHD GTO for use in CA. It is not a big deal.

@seller well done, mate, well done. Since there aren’t any traditional specs on this rendering can you please provide the wheelbase, front track, rear track and overall width? Thanks

The oh-so-real driving video would make Jeremy Clarkson proud. I didn’t see that Rockford turn coming. Outstanding! To paraphrase Candace Bergen from behind the wheel of the Dino 246 GTS in “11 Harrowhouse,” this expert wheelman’s not reckless, he‘s skillful! What a build. What a listing. WOW.
