1970 Dodge Challenger R/T 440 Six Pack 4-Speed

United States Lot # V-000443 Active 60 Bids & Comments
Bids & Comments

Presentation

This 1970 Dodge is one of 1,640 Challenger R/T coupes that were built with a 440ci V8 topped by a trio of Holley two-barrel carburetors, and it is one of 847 such examples that paired the engine with a four-speed manual transmission. A rotisserie refurbishment conducted in North Carolina from 2007 to 2009 after a long period of storage involved repainting the vehicle in black, refreshing the white vinyl interior, replacing the Dana 60 rear axle, and rebuilding the engine with a stroker kit, a flat-tappet camshaft, and aftermarket lifters as well as overhauling the transmission, rear end, and other systems. Features include a Sure-Grip differential, Rallye 15″ wheels, drum brakes, a white vinyl roof, white stripes, a Rallye hood, Rallye gauges, a Hurst pistol-grip shifter, woodgrain interior trim, and an AM radio. The current owner purchased the car in 2011. Now showing 15k miles, this Six Pack Challenger is offered by the seller on behalf of the owner with refurbishment records, judging sheets from the 2010 Mopar Nationals, a copy of the previous owner’s Ohio title, a portion of the original build sheet, and a Washington title in the owner’s name.

The 440ci V8 features an induction system consisting of three two-barrel carburetors. The engine was rebuilt in 2009 with a stroker kit, a Hughes Engines flat-tappet hydraulic camshaft, Hy-lift Johnson lifters, and Hughes valve springs. In addition, the fuel lines, cast-iron exhaust manifolds, and exhaust system were replaced.

Finished from the factory in Black (TX9), the car was stripped to bare metal and repainted during the aforementioned refurbishment. White longitudinal stripes adorn the body sides. Other features include a white vinyl roof, quad headlights, R/T badging, dual side mirrors in chrome housings, a flip-up fuel cap, quadruple rectangular exhaust outlets, and chrome bumpers.

Thank you @MoparCarGuy70 all the information we have on this car is included in the gallery. We don’t have the original build sheet or window sticker. Those documents would certainly help validate the numbers.
As you suggest, every bidder should continue to do their diligence to verify this car and then bid to their confidence based on their verifications. The numbers in evidence are presented in their locations. Bidder determination around the validity of those numbers should be supported by independent research.
To bring a Challenger to this level of fit and finish would be beyond double the current bid. So someone is indeed going to get a very nicely done car. Once again, bid to your confidence based on the information we have presented and other trusted sources familiar with E body Mopars.
Best of luck to all.

@DavidJames007
The photos show the work done to the car appears very well-done and was, obviously, costly. There are some documentation issues on this car, e.g. engine stamps that do not match original format or font, remnants of a non-E-Body Broadcast Sheet, and a very obvious repro Fender Tag with two major errors. The provided Mopar Nats judging sheets oddly excluded the engine although judging today is far more extensive than in 2010.
A Window Sticker or Sales Invoice or other original sales documentation is needed to confirm this extremely nice 1970 V-Code Challenger R/T came optioned as shown.
It will bring serious money for what it is.

Thanks again for the fun comments on the music @PDXBryan and I agree, the engine deserves a bit more of a romping sound. @DavidJames007 I've uploaded photos showing the transmission case and numbers and the cowl stamping (218196) for your review. Whatever you buy, Mopar, Ferrari, Shelby - you should always consult YOUR expert sources or people YOU know and trust. Info from Facebook is always interesting but do those folks have your money in their pocket? No. Which means they don't always have your best interests in mind. Which is why I always will research a car as best I can and then offer an opinion about the value to ME. Do your research, keep asking questions, and I will do my best to reply. The number on this engine is the number on this engine. That is a fact. How that number correlates with expert opinions about the origins of it will likely vary. Here too, do your diligence and bid to your comfort level. Here's what we know about this car based on information during our research, owner information, and general info gathered from restoration records. This is a very well restored Challenger delivered with the higher performance 440 V8 6-pack engine which has the matching production sequence number stamped on the engine block. The factory trim tag matches the dash tag which also indicates it to be a factory 440 6-pack car originally delivered in black with white interior and 4-speed transmission. Assembled in February 1970 at the Hamtramck, MI facility, this Challenger R/T is one of 847 examples built with the factory 4-speed manual transmission. After restoration was completed in this car spanning 2007-2009, the car was judged at the Mopar Nationals in 2010 and received 419 out of 442 points, with just 23 points noted as deductions some of which have since been corrected in recent years. The restoration included new coachman white interior panels, seat covers, and door panels from Legendary Auto Interiors, dash pad restored by Just Dashes, seat belts rebuilt and rewebbed by SnakeOyl, the woodgrain steering wheel restored, and the carpets headliner, and sun visors, replaced. The engine was rebuilt with a new flat tappet hydraulic camshaft, head and block machining, a 440 stroker kit, racing lifters, and new valve springs. @floorit426 A new set of Dana 60 axles were installed and the rear end rebuilt, along with a rebuild for the 833 transmission, and a new exhaust system. The body was stripped to bare metal (unknown to us @lunchbocks2002 if any panels or how many were replaced) and refinished in the original black color with white vinyl roof and R/T side stripes per the fender tag. All systems including new fuel lines, brake lines, suspension, brakes, and all bushings, rubber, and chassis details were completed to a high standard. When the Ohio State title was issued to the former owner, the mileage was stated to be original on the title at 14,751 miles. The odometer currently indicates 14,852 miles, though we have no documentation to support the former title claim. The current owner purchased this car in 2011. Although portions of an original build sheet were found during restoration, only some sections of the sheet are readable and offer number codes for reference. @AZdesertcamaro a restoration of this standard generally would be about 2,000 hours, depending on the shop and how much metal work was involved.

@a990dna -
Your throwback story has made me smile. This ICON along with genuine humor makes for a great start to the week. The “Banquet Beer” is inherently classy and of course predated those “Little Chocolate Doughnuts” as “the breakfast of champions.”
@PDXBryan -
Thank you, but a990dna should get the credit for pointing out the classy music. I simply expanded on his good observation and making the connection. I seriously like your proper contrasting music ideas for the 440 revealing. Outstanding suggestions. Might I also add one more heavy Zeppelin tune, “When the Levee Breaks.” And “Mississippi Queen,” because “Vanishing Point.” The list could go on. The picks by @lunchbocks2002 are on the money. @Hoppy18 -
👍
Watch the movie and then rewatch with the excellent director’s commentary, and you’ve got yourself a “three-hour tour.”

Ok, so you’re saying the build sheet is in fact for a different car? Just included with this car because that’s how you obtained it? Just want to make sure I understand. There’s a lot of chatter on Facebook about this car. Gorgeous, no doubt. Many claim the fender tag is not original/ correct, along with the engine being a “re stamp”. & do agree the “HP440” is a bit odd. Is there any info you can provide us on these issues? Thanks
Oct 25, 2026 · 13:39
@Raffi Do you know how much sheet metal, if any, was replaced on the car? Were the carburetors purchased new when the rebuild was done?
Oct 25, 2026 · 12:47
@PDXBryan I most certainly agree those six barrels and that color correlate more with "Black Dog" or possibly Achilles Last Stand. It really gets the juices flowing.

"Absolute perfection! As a fellow E-body owner with a '72 and a '74 sitting in my garage, I have to say this 1970 is breathtaking. The lines, the details, and the stance are spot on. I’d love nothing more than to add this beauty to the collection. Good luck to everyone bidding—she’s a true trophy!"

@CarDogThreePedals: you’ve got the following homework to complete if you’re not already enlightened to it, 1971’s “Vanishing Point.”
Permit me a light-hearted reply to your tag by incorporating a TV show that ended about 3 years before this Dodge was produced. Dear Professor,
I look forward to completing your assignment! If only I had teachers as enthusiastic as YOU, I'd have gladly done all of my homework ...and maybe, just maybe, I'd be in a better position today to bid on this righteous R/T. Gilligan

@Raffi
I agree with @CarDogThreePedals about the classy bossa-nova jazz piano (Hank Jones, Jimmy Rowles or maybe Tommy Flanagan?) accompanying the walk-around of this black & white beauty. But when you open that hood I’m thinking a segue into ‘Kashmir’ or ‘Black Dog’ might be appropriate ;^)

@CarDogThreePedals…
As long as that’s a “SIXPACK” of “COORS — Breakfast of Champions!”
That was my favorite T-shirt, proudly worn underneath my Sunday-best white-collared shirt to church every Sunday morning. Yep, a beer-drinking “Breakfast of Champions” T-shirt hidden beneath my respectable Sunday attire! I was a true Protestant (protester) by nature. Mom had no idea what I was sporting underneath until I walked down the aisle right in front of her, making sure she got a good look! Mopars and Protestants go together like Coors and beer nuts. 😉

Lived in the PNW all of my life and had no idea such a beautiful Challenger was in my neighborhood! Best!
Oct 22, 2026 · 22:50
Very impressive! How many estimated labors hours was required to achieve such a stunning car?
Oct 22, 2026 · 15:11
Was the Dana rearend replaced, or rebuilt? If it was replaced, what was the reason?
Oct 22, 2026 · 14:04
@a990dna. -
Indeed. The music for the walk around video truly underscores the classiness of this Challenger. Besides, is there anything classier that says “SIXPACK” on it than this? @Hoppy18 -
For what it’s worth, you’re OK by me to be a “voting member in the Mopar gang,” but you’ve got the following homework to complete if you’re not already enlightened to it, 1971’s “Vanishing Point.” I highly recommend the excellent Blu-Ray. I have faith in you becoming a newfound “MoParian” by the end of this listing. Good call on the “Raffi Certified.” What more does one need? @PDXBryan -

@lunchbocks2002 and @PDXBryan yep this is a really good one to share with the "group" Best of all the factory matching V-Code and 4 speed are pretty amazing in any car but add that TX9 color and it's off the charts. Super rare. Then consider that this one came from the factory with manual drum brakes all around, no power steering, and you might think the original owner was ticking the boxes for a "sleeper". And yet, it has some nice dressier details to draw attention to the tuxedo look. @70_duster the black is so nice, especially this car as the finish is mirror-like and so well done, even the undercarriage is super well done and properly detailed. It's certainly one of the best factory six packs I've seen that isn't running for Platinum. Not perfect but perfectly ready to show and drive like Dodge intended.

OK I am back home now and fitting these replies as promised. @ChargeRTBob is correct (no surprise there - thanks again Bob) @shortfielder those are resonators. I had them on my 383 RT/SE as well. @Transamcuda it should be the matching numbers transmission since this is a very well buttoned up example. We are going to get that photo for you tomorrow along with the cowl photo for @MONC who asked for the cowl stamp, which it there but has been painted over and not as visible as the one on the radiator support which is matching. @DavidJames007 the remnants of the build sheet were included with this car and that is why we included it with this auction. In my experience, in the case of vintage cars, I have found that it's important to always transfer ALL documentation that comes with a car. I've often discovered relevant information on a car from secondary source materials that were part of a past owner history. Keep your questions coming. I will do my best to reply in a timely manner
Oct 22, 2026 · 09:58
ChargeRTBob. Thanks for the thorough explanation. Guess I've had a sheltered life. Hadn't even heard of resonaters on cars. Obviously they have been around for awhile, and so have i, but I never saw them when we were rippin it up back in the 60'/70's. Lot of times just a muffler and not even a tail pipe.

@MoparCarGuy70, what issues did you notice?
Oct 21, 2026 · 23:29
@shortfielder In regard to your exhaust question, what are depicted in Photo📸#s 246, 248, 249, 251 & 253 (rectangular-in-shape), and, located ahead of the rear axle are resonators. …And, what is viewable in Photo📸#s 254-261 (cylindrical in shape) are mufflers. (The E-Body configuration is the exact opposite of the B-Body configuration (which is: mufflers, first; resonators second), as well as most other set-ups of this nature, however, that’s the way they designed the system. There was no catalytic converter used in any Chrysler Corp car of this era; not even in California. That would come a few years later; circa Model Year 1975, when US EPA mandates required them. (I hope that this info helps!)

@PDXBryan: Re your comment just below... Even though I don't own a "MoPar", I hope it allows me to be a voting member of the "gang" ...so I second your motion. IMO, the end result of his fine auction may well give birth to a new MoParian ...a benefit to the (automotive) planet!

Thanks all for the great comments and enthusiasm for this exceptional V-code Mopar. I’m on my way home from a family event so I’ll wrap up briefly as I’m getting the side eye from my wife sneaking off a comment which I will elaborate on later, answer questions later today, and add more info on this rare factory Tuxedo V-code 4 speed. Now I’ve said too much and side eye is growing to stank eye…”honey, I’m working on my six pack for you” I say to her hopefully. Best of luck to all bidders and thanks for your patience this morning.

Wow @Raffi , this is definitely bringing it! The black and white color scheme has to be one of only a few if not the only. The 3.54 Dana gearing is just right and here we have an example of the invisible big stick I constantly advocate. How much additional stroke was applied and what's the final displacement? I can only imagine how it pulls when the extra 1,000 CFM kicks in from the outer carbs. This is going to be justifiably expensive, GLWTA!
