Presentation

This 1982 Ferrari 512 BBi is one of 1,007 fuel-injected examples produced over a four-year production run. Chassis 42769 was imported to the US in August 1982 before being acquired by the current owner in April 2000 and later underwent an engine-out service in April 2023. The car is finished in Rosso Corsa over Beige leather and is powered by a 4.9-liter F110A flat-12 linked with a five-speed manual transaxle and a limited-slip differential. It rides on center-lock metric five-spoke wheels and features a front lip spoiler and a high-mount rear wing along with pop-up headlights coupled with fog lights. Inside, Daytona-style seats are accompanied by a Nardi steering wheel and a gated shifter as well as Borletti air conditioning and an Alpine CD stereo. This 512 BBi is now offered on dealer consignment in Douglassville, Pennsylvania, with an owner’s manual, import documents, a temporary spare, a jack bag, and a clean New York State title listing the car as a 1983 model.

The Berlinetta Boxer model was styled by Pininfarina’s Leonardo Fioravanti and was introduced at the 1971 Turin Auto Show. The car features a steel-paneled cabin section paired with a tubular chassis. Aluminum is incorporated for the front and rear clamshells and door panels, while the lower panels are fiberglass. The 512 BBi variant was introduced at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 1981. The cars were not officially offered in the US, though some were imported and federalized in-period via the gray market.

This example is finished in Rosso Corsa and features a body-color front lip spoiler, high-mount rear wing, and intake covers. Pop-up headlights are paired with fog lights up front, and further details include an aluminum hood grille, door-mounted mirrors, NACA side ducts, and quad exhaust outlets. Various exterior imperfections are pointed out in the walkaround video below.

Center-lock 415mm five-spoke wheels are mounted with 240/55 Michelin TRX tires. The 512 BBi features a fully independent suspension with unequal-length double wishbones, anti-roll bars fore and aft, and Koni shocks all around with a double coilover setup out back. Stopping power is provided by ventilated discs at all four corners.
26-Years-Owned 1982 Ferrari 512 BBi photo 5
The cabin features Daytona-style seats upholstered in Beige leather, along with a color-coordinated center console and door panels. An Alpine CDM-7836 stereo is installed in the dash, and further amenities include Borletti air conditioning as well as power windows and retractable shoulder belts.

The Ferrari-stamped Nardi steering wheel is accompanied by a dogleg-pattern gated shifter as well as drilled aluminum pedals below. Veglia instrumentation consists of a speedometer, a tachometer with a 7k-rpm redline, and auxiliary readouts for coolant temperature and oil pressure in the cluster flanked by a clock and gauges for oil temperature, amperage, and fuel level on either side. The selling dealer notes that a 200-mph speedometer face was installed, though the odometer reads in kilometers. The five-digit odometer shows 12k kilometers (~7k miles).

These cars are '70's and '80's Supercars. Yet are easy to get in and out of, have great vision while driving, have a wonderful supple ride, and are fast enough to keep up with not only daily traffic but also any Ferrari club tour you might undertake. They are a true GT car.
Plus the music of the flat 12 engine. Sublime.
Oct 20, 2026 · 16:40
I have an 84’ and love it.
Amazing to drive as well
Nothing like a Flat 12 strapped to the back of your seat screaming at 8k RPM
I recently put mine back to 100% factory spec
This example is a amazing and a priceless piece of history for sure
Oct 20, 2026 · 16:36
What spectacular cars, and this one certainly checks all the boxes. The injection is simple and reliable. The recent service means you can drive it right away. In comparison, they're "big" cars, but they don't drive that way. I took one to a Ferrari Club event a couple decades ago and my lady, after driving her first few laps, was ecstatic. She has good taste. Auto Palace was front and center in the heyday of the grey market at that time, when quite a few 400i's and BBi's made it over here. I serviced a few, one of which is still owned after thirty years by the same guy. They inspire loyalty and part of that is that they're darned easy to live with, especially for what was, at the time, one of the fastest cars in the world. GLWTA. It's still at a reasonable price, for sure.

Actually, the grill (in the front bonnet) is anodized aluminum having a semi-matt finish except for the top of each slat--it is bright aluminum in those areas. Would be hard to restore...
@ChicagoGas, the Amerispec confusion may come from photos 309/310, R. Merritt has signed them, and an Amerispec fax stamp is also included. These date from 11/9/1999.
The original EPA paperwork (photo 307) provides a certification test date of 1/27/83 and in the "Modifications Performed By" section provides Grande Auto as the company that performed the EPA work.
Perhaps @stiffarm can confirm that?

Oct 20, 2026 · 10:25
Very nice Boxer..My father owned an 84' (51339) that he purchased with less than 1000 km back in 1985. It was federalized by Amerispec. To meet the bumper requirments they added a 1/4" to 3/8' thick flat metal bar across the front and back bumpers..Actually not too bad looking. I still have the original headlight bulbs, seat belt latches, and a few odds& ends..The car is long gone but the memories never fade..This is a very nice low mileage example..GLWS

This car was not Federalized by Dick Fritz’s Amerispec Corporation. You can see that by just looking at the visible modifications to the car or photos of EPA/DOT documentation in the photo gallery. Amerispec cars were not modified the way this car has been. I own an Amerispec 1984 512BBi and have assembled a ton of period Amerispec import documentation through the years.
Additionally, the 512 BB, (and the 365 GT4/BB before that) were Federalized without removing their factory equipped carburetors and replacing them with an injection system.

From what I have been told: The additional gauge is a fuel pressure gauge, which was likely installed to allow the driver to monitor fuel pressure. The 512 BBi uses Bosch K-Jetronic mechanical fuel injection, a system that relies on proper fuel pressure for correct operation. The gauge provides a convenient way to keep an eye on fuel pressure, which is an important parameter when monitoring the health of the fuel delivery system.
This is a collectors PIECE, let have an AUCTION, and get some bids rolling!
TJP512
Oct 19, 2026 · 12:22
@LewL No answer on the extra gauge. I zoomed in a couple of the photos and it appears to be a fuel pressure gauge. Confirmation would be appreciated.
Fuel tanks were never replaced during federalization so there is no reason for an additional fuel gauge.
LewL
Oct 19, 2026 · 03:08
Was the question about the extra gauge to the left of the steering wheel answered? Was it for an auxiliary fuel tank?
Oct 19, 2026 · 00:24
Yes, you are correct i stands for injection but I was mistaken 1980 was the last year for carburetors after that the factory put on Bosch K injection or also known as CIS but the grey market carburetor cars that came to this country via Gray market went to a company called Amerispec and were modified to the CIS system to pass EPA

@904CarreraGTS
I am not an expert…but I am 99% sure that all of the ‘83’s are BBi and the I stands for a fuel injected car.
Oct 18, 2026 · 14:59
Correct me if I’m wrong, but this is a Amerispec car that was modified with the fuel injection. Yes, it is a gray market car, but but when it came to this country from Ferrari, it had carburetors on it and then they went through a company called Amerispec that put the fuel injection on it so it would pass EPA.

Still would like to see the exact contents of both tool kits please. These are high value items and matter to the value of the car. Also, what is the small aftermarket gauge to the left of the steering column and below the speedometer? It appears to be a secondary fuel gauge but why the redundancy?

I have to ask: why is the rear wheel arch clearance and rear ride height (vs front) so distinctly high? It most certainly does not match the front, so was maybe this was some intentional positive rake? I've seen a lot of Boxers (and driven a few) and none have visually been so pronounced.
