1966 Porsche 912 Coupe 5-Speed

This 1966 Porsche 912 coupe was originally built as a Polo Red coupe with chrome-plated wheels and black leatherette upholstery, and it was first sold in the US and was registered in Sacremento as of 2012. It was imported to England at some point thereafter, and it was acquired by the seller in 2023 and subsequently refurbished. The body was repainted black and the interior was redone with black vinyl and cloth upholstery, and its 1.6-liter flat-four was rebuilt by Pie Performance and fitted with a replacement clutch as well as twin Weber carburetors. Per the seller, £20k was spent on refurbishment work over the last few years. This SWB 912 coupe is now offered in London with Porsche documentation, invoices, a historical copy of the US title, and V5C registration.
Originally Polo Red, the car’s current black paintwork was recently applied and is the third respray performed under current ownership, per the seller. European-specification headlights have been added, and the seller tinted the windows. The majority of the listing photos were taken in 2025.
Steel wheels are painted to match and mounted with 165-15 Firestone tyres. The car is equipped with independent front and rear suspension, and braking is handled by discs at all four corners.
PYY 455D is taxed through January 2027, though its most recent MOT certificate expired in early 2025.
The seller replaced both the dashboard pad and carpeting, and the seats have cloth inserts to complement the vinyl bolsters. A hidden sound bar and USB connectors are hidden below the dashboard.
The refurbished four-spoke steering wheel fronts green-script VDO instrumentation including a centrally mounted 7k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, and a combination gauge for fuel level and oil temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 87k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.

I agree that original paint adds value because the car is in original condition (assuming it's not a rusty/banged up mess with original paint). But once the original paint is bad, it is a repaint. And, the only difference is a pigment - and as @70SATMan points out, it all depends on the quality of the repaint - lots of color changes are not quality jobs. Take Sand Beige for example - to me a color change of Sand Beige brings UP the value!

Thank you! Yes, that's just condensation as the engine was cold when the video was taken. Once the engine is warmed up there is no visible smoke from the exhaust.

Killer 912. Is the smoke from the idle video from built up condensation or is there actual visible exhaust when warmed up?

Historically, a color change is usually more like 20% tops and of course the replacement color and quality of the paint has a big impact on that. Easy to determine if it's a stock for stock change all other things being equal. Can't see it being 30%. Once you get into mods and non-stock builds, I believe it's more of a crapshoot as more variables come into play. Killer vision and execution vs unmarketable hot mess. For me, the color change on this particular car is more positive value than negative. Like art, it's going to be subjective to the individual.

I don't think I'll ever understand why anyone would go to all this work and change colors on an otherwise expensive car! I see this all the time. I understand this if these Porsche sellers only want 70% of the value ( all other items being equal) but no, they also want 100% value. I don not blame a current owner that bought it with changed color ( although I would not buy such) but these are wonderful cars and valuable and expensive. Were not talking a Honda CRV or similar!

Lid matches the grill. It's a hot rod. Questioning design differences from stock seems a little pointless. One either loves a look or doesn't. Either is OK. I friggen LOVE IT!

@Matt_McK The Porsche script and rear bumperettes were already on the car when I bought it. The Porsche letters are not stickers, they are riveted on, and to be honest I always thought they were original. About two weeks ago I decided to remove the 912 badge. I had the holes properly welded and the whole rear deck lid resprayed. I'm a bit of a perfectionist and I just thought it looked much cleaner without it.

Any reason you decided to go with the ‘67+ ‘Porsche’ script on the rear deck lid rather than the ‘65-66 version? Same goes for the rear bumperettes although with them I’d imagine it was to continue the blackout theme

If you don't like the wheels, they are easy to change. Six-inch rims with a lower-profile tire would also provide more stickiness.

@montereyjp Thank you, really appreciate it! Yes, I painted the Firestone lettering myself. In person it is not as bright as it looks in the photos and has faded nicely, so it blends in with the overall look rather than standing out and taking your attention away from the car. If the new owner doesn't like it, it can very easily be painted over.

Unreal...the look on this car is sinister. Agree with @wmjc that this has to be the coolest 912 out there. One curious question.....did you guys paint the "Firestone" on the sidewalls of the tires. Very cool and retro looking, but doesn't appear to be an offering from Firestone. GLWTA! Though I don't think you'll need it.

Hi Leif, I don't know the origin or manufacturer of the seats unfortunately. The car already had these seats when I bought it. They are in excellent, like-new condition and look great in the car. Both seats adjust forwards and backwards and the backrests are adjustable as well. I will have a look to see if there is any name or marking on the adjustment handles.
