Presentation

This Maserati 450S re-creation was constructed in 2020 by Andreas Graf of Barchetta Sportscars in Kaltenburg, Germany, utilizing aluminum coachwork over a tubular steel spaceframe chassis. Power is supplied by a 4.9-liter Maserati Tipo 107 quad-cam V8 with quadruple Weber carburetors, while shifting is via a ZF five-speed manual transmission and a Salisbury Power-Lok differential. Finished in dark blue, the car features a headrest fairing, a riveted aluminum fuel tank, and a dual side-exit exhaust system. It rides on 15″ Borrani knock-off wire wheels and is further equipped with independent suspension utilizing adjustable coilovers as well as four-wheel disc brakes. The right-hand-drive cockpit houses fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in tan leather accompanied by multi-point harnesses, a wood-rimmed steering wheel, and Jaeger instrumentation. Purchased by the current owner in 2024, this 450S re-creation is now offered by the seller on behalf of the owner in the Chichester, England, with a tonneau cover and V5C registration that lists the vehicle as a 1960 Maserati convertible.

Development of the original 450S began in 1954 under the project name Tipo 54 and resumed in 1956 when Maserati was tasked with producing a V8 for use in an Indianapolis 500 chassis. After the powerplant was tested in a 350S chassis, a new platform was designed by Valerio Colotti to accommodate the increased power. The model gave Maserati second place in the 1957 World Championship of Makes before production ceased in 1958 after approximately 10 chassis had been built.

This re-creation utilizes aluminum bodywork finished in blue over a tubular steel spaceframe chassis. Features include drilled release handles for the hood and trunk panels as well as a hood scoop amid louvers, faired-in headlights, a wraparound plexiglass windscreen, a headrest fairing, louvers behind each wheel, dual side-exit exhaust, and Monza-style fuel filler caps accessible through the trunk panel.
Maserati 450S Re-Creation photo 4
Silver-finished Borrani wire-spoke wheels are secured via three-eared knock-off spinners and mounted with Dunlop Racing tires measuring 6.00-15 up front and 6.50-15 at the rear. Braking is via four-wheel discs with the rears mounted inboard.
Maserati 450S Re-Creation photo 5
The right-hand-drive cockpit houses a pair of fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in tan leather surrounded by bare aluminum panels. Tenzo-R multi-point harnesses are equipped for both occupants, and a fire extinguisher is mounted in the passenger’s footwell. Additional appointments include a rearview mirror, leather door-pull straps, an aluminum shifter, and an OBP Motorsport pedal box.
Maserati 450S Re-Creation photo 6
The wood-rimmed steering wheel fronts Jaeger instrumentation including a 220-km/h speedometer, an 8,100-rpm tachometer that operates intermittently, and gauges monitoring voltage and fuel level. Smiths auxiliary gauges are also among the cluster. The five-digit odometer shows 660 kilometers (~410 miles), which is said to reflect the distance traveled since completion of the build. Total mileage is unknown.

Hi @Mikeysz, we have little in the way of paperwork with the car. To answer your questions in order
No, there is no IVA, probably because it was built in Germany and then came to the UK already with a 1960 identity.
We have no documentation from the DVLA other than the V5c
We do not have the original build invoice.
I don't see any obstacles to importing it in to the EU/ Netherlands although I am no expert and have not investigated.
It is registered as an Historic vehicle so it is MoT exempt, so no MoT history. It runs, drives, stops & steers as it should though!
Yes, we can provide a Bill of Sale upon completion of the auction.
Sorry not have further paperwork, the file is rather thin

Thanks for the fast reply. I’ve read the listing and reviewed the V5C. As I’m considering importing the car into the Netherlands, could you please clarify the following before the auction ends?
1. UK road approval: Do you have an IVA certificate, type-approval documentation or other paperwork confirming the basis on which the car was approved for UK road use? If it was exempt, what was the basis for the exemption?
2. DVLA registration: Do you have any supporting documentation explaining why the DVLA accepted the car as manufactured in 1960, given that the recreation was built by Barchetta Sportscars in 2020?
3. Build documentation: Is there an original build invoice or certificate from Andreas Graf / Barchetta Sportscars confirming the build date, chassis number AR45065402 and engine details?
4. Dutch registration: Has anyone previously investigated or attempted to register the car in the Netherlands or another EU country? Are you aware of any obstacles to obtaining Dutch registration?
5. Roadworthiness: Is there a current MOT certificate or recent independent inspection report available?
6. Sale documentation: Will you provide an invoice or bill of sale showing the full purchase price, the chassis number and an accurate description of the vehicle as a recreation?
I appreciate the short timeframe. Copies or photographs of any available documents would be very helpful. Many thanks.

@seller Are you OK storing the car for a short while until shipping can be arranged? Right now it’s hit and miss on timing on Containers from Southampton to the US…
And 2nd question, what was used to raised the front end? Assume it’s a spacer or something? Is it pretty easy to lower it again?
Thanks

@billyblyth very well said, once again, Monsieur. Merci!
Oct 10, 2026 · 22:18
A very worthy recreation of a stand out Maserati. The originals were raced by the likes of Juan Fangio, Sterling Moss and Carroll Shelby. Their arch rivals were the Ferrari 290 MM, 315 S and 335 S models, the Jaguar D-Type and the Aston Martin DBR1. All arguably among the best looking and driving cars ever produced. This one looks like one to own! GLWTA!

Beautiful car. So much attention is given to details, then as with many replicas, they install the wrong steering wheel.
Oct 9, 2026 · 00:38
@Speedhunter74
Quick check on the DVLA Reg check website tells you everything. It’s registered as a 1960 Maserati and states that as the manufacture date. Says first registered in April 2024 with the DVLA. Zero reason why it would get a Q plate when it already has a live current reg and V5C.
Also makes it easy to import to the US as the documentation says 1960 :)
Oct 8, 2026 · 18:15
Can you explain how it was registered in UK? Did it pass mandatory IVA test. Lovely car but concerned I could end up with Q plate.

Hi @tripleblack, thanks for your comments. You are right, the Maserati was built by Barchetta Sportscars in Germany, and there is a YouTube video of the builder talking about the car in the video section. It has an all alloy body over a tubular steel space frame, not a fibreglass body. It is a copy of the long nose 450s, but it does ride slightly high at the front to clear a curb outside the Seller's garage.

Massive front overhang in pix 18 onwards does this replica no favors.

This is an awesome car, and I love the videos. I watched them all, and I couldn't help but have the Speed Racer theme song playing in the back of my head as I watched them. If I remember correctly, the 450S had drum brakes, and Carroll Shelby or one of his contemporaries said the cars couldn't brake well. Having disc brakes on all 4 wheels on this one seems like an awesome choice. Wish I could see this in person! It'd be one awesome car to see at a car show.

@touchyu2 Hi thanks for your questions, I will add the picture of my 6'3" 240lbs 38" waist neighbour sitting in Maserati in my garage to the photos. I would suggest some research into import into US from the UK re taxes and paperwork. The history file is thin, bear in mind its only 6 years since build completed. The engine runs sweet as can be seen and heard in the videos, with no smoke. Don't have compression test data but its only done 660km since build.

@LewL The car has a 5 speed ZF manual gearbox, not transaxle. IRS and LSD are thought to be from the Quattroporte 3 donor car.
touchyu2
Oct 4, 2026 · 04:15
Does the seller have any evidence of ownership DOCs past bills of sale? And what are the current taxes due for export from the UK(not EU) & due for import here? Some evidence of the engine condition such as a compression leak down is going to be needed to get any serious bids. And paperwork required to register or get it titled in the US is likewise going to be needed to get payment?
touchyu2
Oct 3, 2026 · 23:41
I also am 6'3"s tall & abt 240#s can Insee the photo referenced about height of possible driver? What evidence do we get as to the condition of V8 engine and tranaxle as well? Will the seller assist in arranging shipping to the West Coast of the USA? Beautiful car bid coming shortly! THC

@headercase (the seller). Thank you for the responses. Does the car have a transmission or transaxle? If the rear axle solid or independent. Big it’s an IRS was it from a donor car or of a particular design? If so, which? Thanks for the picture you sent of your 6’3” friend in it. It looks like I could fold my 6’4” frame in there!

@CarDogThreePedals: Thanks for your cheers back this AM on my toast to you on the 2nd. I give you a mark of a 100% on your connection between Maserati and Mel Brooks both turning 100. Although The 2000 Year Old Man may have, as you said, meant to have ordered a 450SL (over this 450S)... he'd have been very happy with this particular "shape" of a marvelous Maserati... because he probably was the original founder of the "Flat Earth Theory" :)

Hi Lee, good questions. The threaded rod is for the towing eye. Fan is in front of rad. Second filler cap is a dummy, original car would have been dry sumped and would have had oil tank in rear. We have not had compression readings.

Beautiful car. What is the threaded rod that sticks out just below the front grill? Is the radiator fan mounted in front of or behind the radiator? Why are there two filler caps for the gas tank? Truly a beautiful car.
