Presentation

This 1989 Porsche 911 Speedster is one of 823 US-market examples produced for the model year. The car was initially delivered to Gregg Motors Porsche in Santa Barbara, California, and spent time in Oregon, Colorado, and Texas before being exported to Germany. The car was purchased by the seller from marquee expert Early 911s of Wuppertal, Germany, in 2023 and subsequently imported back to the US. It is finished in Dark Blue over Cashmere leather and is powered by a 3.2-liter flat-six paired with a G50 five-speed manual transaxle. Equipment includes 16″ Fuchs alloy wheels, a Dark Blue soft top, a fiberglass twin-hump convertible-top cover panel, power-adjustable sport seats, a short-throw shifter, a Blaupunkt CD stereo, and fog lights. This 911 Speedster is now offered with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the owner’s manual, a tool kit, a clean Carfax report, and a South Carolina title in the seller’s name.

The car features widened rear bodywork shared with the contemporary 911 Turbo, a fiberglass twin-hump convertible-top rear deck, and a shortened windscreen and side windows when compared to the standard Carrera. This example is finished in Dark Blue (347) with a Dark Blue soft top, and equipment includes integrated fog lights, headlight washers, rear bumperettes, and a single exhaust outlet.

Staggered-width 16″ Fuchs wheels are mounted with Pirelli P Zero Rosso tires that show 2019 date codes. Braking is handled by black Porsche-script calipers over cross-drilled rotors at all four corners.

The power-adjustable sport seats are upholstered in Cashmere leather and are complemented by a color-coordinated dashboard, door panels, and carpets. A Blaupunkt CD stereo has been fitted and the car is further equipped with a short-throw shifter and Coco floor mats. The Speedster was not equipped with rear seats, and the air conditioning system does not work.

The four-spoke leather-wrapped steering wheel frames VDO instrumentation including a central tachometer with a 6,300-rpm redline flanked by a 170-mph speedometer, an analog clock, and gauges for oil temperature, oil pressure, oil level, and fuel level. The six-digit odometer shows 52k miles, approximately 2k of which were added under current ownership. The speedometer was removed for odometer repairs in 2023, and the total mileage is unknown.

The 3.2-liter flat-six features Bosch fuel injection and was factory rated at 215 horsepower and 195 lb-ft of torque.

A pic of the large sticker on the bottom side of the engine cover. between the latch and the AC coil would be helpful. The hinge area on the driver side door looks white-ish. Is that a reflection or wear? I don't see any cracks in the windshield, no cracks? That's a pretty common problem. Thank you.

Nope, rear latch panel is the panel where the deck lid latch is and all technical

Can we please get a close up photo of where the right rear quarter panel is welded to the rear latch panel? When zooming in on pic 106 the weld looks odd to me. May just be the photo but this is also the quarter that has a very high paint meter readings. Thanks

Any chance of a driving video? Pictures of the driver-side bolster, seat switches, door strikes and hinges? Should have a catalyst sticker in the drivers jamb.

Can you clarify if the VIN has been changed? In the documentation from its time in Germany the VIN is shown as WPOZZZ91ZKS173348 and in photo #137 it shows this VIN on the chassis of the car. I see the original VIN documentation in your info, so which does it now carry? Thanks

I didn’t mean to sound abrupt. I just live in a normal state. My son lives in LA and will help me research this a little. He says it has to Smog and his 1985 911 smogs with no problem.
But give me a day or so to dig in
Sorry

Not super helpful reply — but if you’re able to ask the shop that services it, they may know? It’s very relevant to anyone in California.

There she is...my 1989 speedster. I have been watching and hoping to run across her again. I owned this exact speedster in the late 2000's. Amazing, amazing car and wish I still had her. I added the speedster emblem on the back and obtained the COA. I bought her from a gentlemen in Boulder who had bought the speedster from Victory (VMC - Robert Neal). I consigned it and it was ultimately sold right back to Victory. Not sure who they sold the car to. It had 47k miles on it in July 2007 when I sold it. The car looked like it had 7k on it. I am not aware of any paint work to it during or before my ownership. The radio antenna did not work and I was never able to source an OEM replacement for it. Looks like the car now has a short, fixed version of an antenna. The a/c never worked when I had it either (and I dont remember it even having a/c controls, but I may be mistaken there). Very unfortunate about the records. I can vouch that it was perfectly maintained, and ran excellent, during my ownership and if I stumble on an copies of records, I will let the seller know. Anyway, I am so excited to see this speedster again!!!

Does the car still have the necessary equipment to pass California emissions? I note the car was originally registered in CA and shipped from the factory with such equipment, but spent a long time in Germany where, inter alia, bumpers were swapped. It has not been registered in CA since its return. Can the shop you have has it serviced at say whether the CARB-needed equipment is still there? Thanks

Hello Joseph,
I have been trying to get a better understanding of the car’s mileage and service history.
I have already tried asking these questions by email and WhatsApp before arranging a viewing of the car, but unfortunately, I haven't received any response so far.
If I understand correctly:
- April 2009: The car had 48,094 miles.
When was it exported to Germany, and what was the mileage at that time?
- April 2017: The car had 50,374 miles, according to TÜV Rheinland in Germany.
- Early 911S: The car was advertised with 51,020 miles. When exactly was it sold?
- Import to the USA: When did you import the car back to the United States?
- Current mileage: In your photos, the odometer shows 51,774 miles.
What is the exact current mileage?
Also, do you have a some service history covering the period from 48,094 to 51,774 miles (oil changes or/and brake fluid replacements)?
As you know, these should be carried out regularly, with brake fluid typically replaced every 3 years, even if the car is driven very little.
I would appreciate any invoices or service records you could share to help clarify the car’s maintenance history and verify its mileage.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Best regards

I own 1 911 that sat for 22 years and 2 others that have sat for 26 years. One fully restored. The others require restoration. Owners hold on to these speedsters. Many stopped driving them as they age. My 94 964 Speedster had dealer plates for 12 years and I changed the oil. Nothing on Carfax. Wish I could afford this Speedster.

I am no expert. I have no knowledge of any paint being done in this car. A silver car with only 26k miles sold sept 18 and had readings mostly between 7-12 mils
I only have the appraisal which states it is a non restored car from a very reputable company in Germany and a statement from Early911s saying it was an original car.

if those paint meter reading are accurate and the car does not have PPF then the entire car has been painted at some point. Readings should all be 4-6 mil max for factory paint.

In the pictures are also receipts from Porsche Dusseldorf for routine maintenance work done in 2019. Which included fluids and oil and 33 point inspection
I am guessing the 82000 miles on the Early911s ad was a mistake since the car has an odometer in miles but the Germans use km. If u concert 82000 km to miles it is just under 51000 miles. The car was delivered with 51020 miles
I will post some pics of door sills soon

Not sure why all the hate is out there. Calm down please
All fluids and oil and check up maintenance was done by Early911s prior to shipment in March of 2023
I looked at upgrading the A/C with our local Porsche dealer and felt that it wasn’t worth spending $5k to do so
The car was delivered either 51020 miles and it now shows 51700. So you see I only drive it short distances and infrequently. So why worry about A/C when I don’t need to drive it if weather isn’t conducive.
Soon after I received the car I noticed the odometer had quit working. I may have driven it 30 miles or so before driving to Porsche Charleston (65miles away) so let’s round up to around 100 miles with the Odometer inoperable
I too

To say there is no documentation for 15 years spent in Germany is ridiculous I’m sorry to say, there is nobody that is more OCD than a German with a nice car….where is the paperwork from oil changes/repairs/new tires? as many have already stated, to expect top dollar with missing info, missing/changed parts and no AC working?? It doesnt cost $10,000 to fix the AC? It has cut my value that I will bid in half….
Oct 17, 2026 · 20:03
This is a beautiful car for sure, but a bit of a head scratcher. The dearth of service records for a car like this is certainly an oddity as is the in-op AC, especially in South Carolina. The gap in mileage is troubling AND it appears that the “Expose’” from Early 911s shows milage at 83,000. I know it spent time in Germany, but they are crazy for documentation. I love the euro rear bumper, but it brings up more questions. Being a Premium listing would suggest the seller is looking for absolute top-dollar, which is fair, but he needs to provide top-dollar evidence that this car is worth it. Detailed pictures of the underbody, full frunk with carpet removed, driver side interior, door jambs, and rear Sheetmetal. Paint meter readings, and a compression check, if not a leakdown test, are warranted. Lastly seller, put yourself in the bidder’s shoes. I hope the you take these comments as they are intended. Cheers!

@Rennline
I will be posting pictures of some pages from an appraisal done by TUV Rheinland in April of 2017 when the car had 50374 miles on it. But the made important parts as translated by ChapGPT directly from the pages is as follows:
“The inspection was conducted on an unrestored vehicle. No characteristics or qualities are guaranteed for areas of the vehicle that were not inspected or could only be inspected to a limited extent. Regarding the vehicle's history and originality, the information sources available up to the completion of this appraisal were used and interpreted in light of the findings made during the inspection.”
Summary / Condition Rating
The overall condition rating of the vehicle was determined by weighting the individual findings. The vehicle's condition corresponds to Grade 2. In the German classic-car appraisal system, Grade 2 generally indicates a good, well-maintained vehicle in above-average condition, with only minor defects or signs of wear consistent with its age. Vehicle Value
Taking these findings into account, together with the prevailing market conditions for classic vehicles, the value is determined as follows:
Replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert)
€235,000
Final assessed value
What “replacement value” means: This is the estimated amount required to purchase a comparable replacement vehicle under the market conditions considered by the appraiser. It is not necessarily the same as a guaranteed sale price. The odometer reading on the appraisal is listed in miles so it doesn’t appear the odometer was “swapped out”
Again, this vehicle was purchased from Early911s. Please check out their website
Early911s.de to see the quality of cars than Manfred has.

Will we be getting paint meter readings? In a lot of cases when Cars go in and out of Europe, the speedometer is swapped for a KM version while in europe and then swapped back when returning to the US. Do you know if this is the case? That would explain why very few miles are added from 2008-2023. Do you have any info to add to this theory? Thanks
