Presentation

This 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS is one of approximately 91 US-market spyders built with “chairs and flares” and is one of just three examples of the 246 GTS delivered with a targa panel painted in Argento (silver). Chassis 06464 was completed on December 20, 1973, with optional equipment including Campagnolo 14×7.5” wheels, flared fenders, Daytona-style seats, Borletti air conditioning, and power windows. The car was delivered new to Bill Harrah’s Modern Classic Motors in Reno, Nevada, before being sold to its first owner in California. After spending time under the long-term stewardship of its second owner on the West Coast, the car was purchased in 2012 by a New Jersey owner who commissioned a refurbishment that included a repaint in the factory shade of black. It was later purchased by its current owner in 2025 and subsequently underwent work including a re-trim of the interior in the factory-specified Tobacco and black leather and a repaint of the roof in its original Argento shade. Power is provided by a 2.4-liter quad-cam V6 topped with triple Weber carburetors, and additional equipment includes a five-speed manual transaxle, servo-assisted disc brakes, MSD electronic igntion, and a Blaupunkt push-button radio. This 246 GTS is now offered by the seller on behalf of its current owner in California with Matthias Bartz and Marcel Massini reports, handwritten maintenance notes dating back to 1974, invoices from 2022 to present, spare parts, and a Montana title.

The choice of wider Campagnolo wheels accommodated by flared wheel arches was an option for the Dino and, when combined with the choice of Daytona-style seats, comprised the “chairs and flares” treatment. This example’s 7.5”-wide Campagnolo wheels and flared fenders are noted as factory equipment on reports from Matthias Bartz and Marcel Massini, both of which also note delivery with an Argento-painted roof panel.

The body was refinished in its original shade of Nero (20-B-50) during the 2013 refurbishment performed by Classic Showcase in Oceanside, California. Additional work in June 2026 included removal of paint protection film and repainting of the rear panels, rocker panels, and front and rear valances. US-market lighting includes recessed rectangular front turn signals, side markers, red rear turn signal lenses, and rear reflectors inboard of the taillights.

Previously refinished in matte black, the roof panel was returned to its original shade of Argento during the 2026 paintwork.

An inch wider than the standard Dino model’s Cromodora wheels, the Campagnolo alloy wheels are wrapped in 205/70VR14 Michelin XWX tires, as is a spare housed in the front compartment. Stopping is handled by servo-assisted ventilated disc brakes all around.

The cabin underwent a color change to red and black under previous ownership and was returned to its factory-specified combination of Tobacco (VM846) and black leather over the Daytona-style seats and door panels during an interior re-trim performed by Fast Cars of Redondo Beach, California, in March 2026. The dashboard was reupholstered in replacement black “mouse hair” trim during the 2026 project. Additional features include beige carpeting, a gated shifter, Borletti air conditioning, power windows, and a Blaupunkt push-button radio.

Less than 2 hours to go. Closing time 10:05am. Dont sleep on this one. Please be sure to refresh your screen often in the final two minutes, and dont wait for the final seconds to bid for fear that you may miss out on the clock. jjjsssbbb, the car arrived in California and was taken to Ferrari of Newport Beach but the Classiche Manager at Newport John Amette, had retired no-one could commence nor comment. If you read the notes of the long time owner, he lovingly cared for this car for 38 years, performed 91 entries into the journal including 61 oil changes. He notated the removal of the emissions equipment when it was very common to do so. I have included photos of all the numbers on the car has never been in an accident or rusted as it spent most of its life in California prior to moving to Florida for a short period and back to California. Please read my earlier comment and it will go into detail about your very question. No concerns have been raised otherwise

Thank you for the detailed history of 06464. The restoration work and documentation are impressive.
I have a Classiche-certified 275 GTB, so I appreciate the importance of Ferrari’s authentication process.
Can you clarify whether Ferrari of Newport Beach actually began the formal Classiche authentication inspection before the department manager retired? Were any concerns raised regarding the originality of the chassis, engine, gearbox, or body?
Also, is there any written correspondence from Ferrari confirming that certification was postponed solely because of the personnel change and subsequent restoration work?

Oct 13, 2026 · 13:53
@jjjsssbbb thanks for the question, I had already answered that in my opening comment, however, I started the journey but the Classiche rep at Ferrari of Newport retired the week before the car was brought to them. To certify one would need to reinstall the emissions equipment that was removed and appear in the photo gallery and as are coming with the car.
Oct 13, 2026 · 13:48
Is it Classiche certified by Ferrari? If not any specific reason? Thanks!

Is there a tool roll?

Oct 12, 2026 · 07:37
The Chairs and Flares designation remains one of the more interesting late-production footnotes for the 246, essentially a factory-fitted combination of the Daytona-style seat inserts and the flared arches that had been developed for the North American market toward the tail end of the run. Production of the GTS as a whole was limited to roughly 1,274 cars across 1972-74, and the subset carrying both options is a small fraction of that. Black over tobacco with the contrasting silver targa panel is a particularly cohesive spec for the look, and the Campagnolo 7.5-inch wheels fill the flares exactly as intended.
Chassis 06464 reading in both Bartz and Massini is always reassuring on a car at this level.
A genuinely lovely example to see come to market.

@Newport01. I am 6’3” 195 and fit very comfortably in my GTS with the roof on and off. The only time I feel slightly cramped is when the roof panel is stored behind the seats which does not allow them to go all the way back. But in my 26+ years owning the car, I believe I’ve only ever had the roof behind the seats two or three times. Now bid with confidence!

@ATBFS, it is nice to hear from you, thank you for your bid and thank you for your questions. The original toolkit did not accompany the car when the current owner acquired it, and no toolkit is included in the sale.
Regarding the emissions and smog equipment, the maintenance log records that it was removed in August 1977 and stored in a box under the house. The equipment was subsequently reinstalled as indicated in the March 1992 entry.
The ignition system was also upgraded over the years. The log records a Delta Mark 10 system in 1982, followed by an MSD 6A/T in 1990. It was upgraded again to the system currently installed, as noted in my earlier post.

The maintenance log included in the listing gallery provides a detailed history of the car’s care. Roger Adkins purchased 06464 in August 1974 and maintained the log through February 2002, covering nearly 28 years and approximately 63,000 miles.
The log records 61 engine oil changes, together with regular gearbox oil changes, filter and spark plug replacements, cooling-system service, brake work, and suspension and steering lubrication. Mechanical work included a water pump in 1981, an alternator rebuild in 1986, distributor service at Waterfront Ferrari in 1987, a fuel pump in 1996, and a clutch cable in 2001. In July 1993, at 49,900 miles, the engine and transmission were removed and inspected, with the existing drivetrain retained.
The June 23, 2014 email to Bonhams provides further detail about the restoration by Classic Showcase in 2013. Classic Showcase describes a comprehensive restoration involving disassembly, body preparation and refinishing, replating of brightwork as needed, and a complete new interior. It specifically states that the engine block and head were machined and the engine rebuilt to the correct specifications. The transmission, clutch and hydraulic systems were restored and serviced, the exhaust system was replaced, and rubber components were renewed as needed. The original Blaupunkt radio was also modified to accept a concealed iPod connection.
The current owner has since returned the interior to its original Tabacco leather, the roof to silver, with guidance from Dino historian Matthias Bartz and the correct Momo steering wheel was obtained and installed. The odometer now shows 67,879 miles, approximately 3,400 miles beyond Mr. Adkins’ final log entry.

3,913 Total Dino 246s. 1,282 GTS (Spiders). 3 with Silver tops.
#06464 is 1of 3.
According to Dino historian Matthias Bartz's production archives, less than one quarter of one percent of Dino Spiders left the factory with a silver (Argento) top. 1,279 (99.7%), were produced with a black top. Extremely rare, then add to the fact that it is the desirable and collectible Chairs and Flares example, produced in the very rare Nero on Tabacco. If you like rare, matching numbers Ferraris, it doesn't get much better. A rare combination like this may never come around again. I think you guys are seeing a reflection off of the floor. If you look at the walk around video the gloss pics up a lot of reflections but it does look like there's a strip at the very bottom of the body that starts below the door that is a satin finish. @route.us.66 interesting gloss/flat combination unless that is a reflection from the floor?? Only 62? There's a Nero bumper delete Dino that haunts the Italiano event @ Pebble that i still covet. Nero doesnt show off the design nuances as well as lighter colors but this combo looks very tasty as in a B&T - Guinness & Harp.

Maybe I’ll just bid $500,000 so I can say I once offered someone a half million for their car.

Awesome Dino!! And it even comes with an extra screw in the ashtray in pic 80!! That alone if painted black is worth 250k!! Seriously cool and rare Dino, one of my all time favorites in rare black. GLWTA!!

Epicness on so many levels - hand written notes on oil change, color combo, chairs flares to silver Targa top ! If anyone disrespects this car they can go …. Themselves and the horse they rode into town with !

Very beautiful in black, and I love the silver top.

Able to review the actual compression results and have a Dino specialist inspect the engine, gearbox, rust, and recent paintwork?
