1963 Chevrolet Corvette Split-Window Coupe L84 327/360 Fuelie 4-Speed
Presentation
This 1963 Chevrolet Corvette is a split-window coupe was specified from the factory with a Rochester fuel-injected, 360-horsepower 327ci L84 V8, a four-speed manual transmission, and a Positraction differential. Additional factory options included power brakes, power windows, and a a Delco AM/FM radio. A cosmetic and mechanical restoration performed by Naber Brothers of Houston, Texas, totaled over $96k and involved removing the body from the frame, rebuilding the engine and transmission, installing a replacement suspension, clutch assembly, refurbishing the interior, and more as detailed on the 15-page invoice below. The car went on to receive three NCRS Top Flight awards between 2011 and 2012, with total scores of 97.5, 97.1, and 97.2, and was honored with a Palmetto Award at the November 2011 Hilton Head Island Concours d’Elegance & Motoring Festival in South Carolina. This C2 Fuelie has remained under the seller’s care since 2013, and is now offered with its factory window sticker, a NCRS Shipping Data report, NCRS confirmation and validation letters, NCRS judging sheets, Palmetto and Top Flight awards, manufacturers literature, and a clean California title in the seller’s name.
The car’s original window sticker shows initial delivery to Ziegler Motors of Zelienople, Pennsylvania, as well as factory equipment, colors, and a total price of $5,304.80. A 2010-dated NCRS document validation letter for the window sticker is shown in the gallery.
This car left the factory finished in Silver Blue (912), and the body was removed from the frame and repainted by Naber Brothers under prior ownership. The associated invoice indicates that the hood, glass, upper surround, rear upper deck panel, rear quarter panels, and chrome bumperettes were replaced at this time. Details include flip-up headlamps, fender vents, quad tail lamps, and dual exhaust tips that exit through the rear valance.
The C2 was the first Corvette to offer fully independent suspension, with upper and lower control arms at the front and a three-link setup with a transverse leaf spring at the rear. The suspension was fitted with replacement control arms, control arm shafts, front shocks and springs, rear shocks, rear trailing arms, tie rod ends, and a right-side spindle as well as various bushings and associated components throughout.
Color-keyed 15” steel wheels feature three-eared knock-off spinner-style hubcaps and are wrapped in US Royal Safety 800 tires. Power-assisted drum brakes were equipped from the factory. The master cylinder and booster were repaired and the brake shoes, shields, wheel cylinders, lines, hoses, and cables were replaced.
The bucket seats and door panels are trimmed in dark blue vinyl with color-coordinated lap belts. Factory options include power windows and a Delco AM/FM radio. The cabin was re-done by Naber Brothers, which included restoration of the bucket seats, reconditioning of the seat belts, installation of new carpeting with underlying padding, and repairs of the center console and glovebox. The seller tells us that the radio was rebuilt under their ownership to mitigate static interference.

High end auctions have a variety of hurdles, as we see here with the discussion of the block authenticity. This rarefied air of museum type details certainly draws a clientele that raises the price, or value. But what I find interesting is the car, I have no personal interest in the price going to the Moon. The design, the race history, the quality when new, the aesthetics, that sort of thing ie; how wonderful was the car?
Chevy got rid of the split window, because it wasn't good design for a window, so Duntov wanted it gone. Just a reminder.

@Dmazor
I did see the vehicle on Saturday but unfortunately, I was not the person doing the inspecting. I was the one with the longer blonde hair. @Daniel1962 was the one crawling under the car and asking all the questions. I was just there for moral support. That being said, this is certainly a beautiful car but I cannot confirm any authenticity of the broach marks. I certainly do not want to be held responsible for confirming such a major item. I am no Al Greening.
Anyone interested should review “all” the photos and “all” the judging sheets and make their own determination.

Hi,
I truly do appreciate the comments and interest in my car and I would like to clarify the ongoing discussion regarding the engine broach marks as best I can.
This Corvette underwent three separate NCRS judging events, receiving the following scores:
• January 2011: 97.1% — Top Flight
• October 2011: 97.5% — Top Flight
• January 2012: 97.2% — Top Flight
During the January 2011 judging, a 38-point deduction was assessed for "Absent Broach Marks." Without that deduction, the raw score would have been 4,410 out of 4,510 possible points, approximately 97.8% and higher than the score it received, but we cannot argue with the judge 15 years later and to be honest, I did not see this comment in the judging sheets until @DebLarson brought it up and even then I had to take out a magnify glass to read it.
Importantly, the comment was made in the January 2011 judging but neither the October 2011 nor January 2012 judging events identified any issue with the engine stamping, VIN derivative, or broach marks and they too have high scores.
Additional close-up photographs have been provided showing the broach marks. Furthermore, @DebLarson, who originally raised the question, personally inspected the vehicle this past Saturday and confirmed their presence.
We all know NCRS judges perform detailed evaluations, but observations can differ. The fact remains that this Corvette received three outstanding Top Flight scores, with no repetition of the January 2011 broach mark deduction in subsequent judging and a dozen or more people who have now inspected the car.
I appreciate the questions and the attention to originality. I believe and hope the photographs, personal inspection, and judging history provide prospective buyers with the information needed to evaluate this issue.
Thanks

TFP (typical for factory production) broach marks don't confirm authenticity by themselves. Some factory small block pads had nearly indiscernible machine marks on the deck surface, presumably relative to the wear of the tooling. My engine was assembled on 1/14/1963 and the broach marks are not visible in photos. Comparison to other known-original engines with the same assembly date is more relevant. I don't have any FI pads in my modest database at or near this production date to opine further. Also consider that the judging was done well over 10 years ago--we've learned a lot about stamp pads and trim tags since then.
I think this is one of the best-restored 63 Corvettes we have seen on this platform. I wish mine had cosmetics as strong as this.

AS SupremeDeluxe pointed out page of the mechanical section from the October 2011 judging event is missing. Explanation that pic505 is the 1st page and pic 506 is second is not relevant. As stated it would be interesting to read the judges notes. To me it looks like the broach marks are there but would help answering some questions maybe.

"Matching Numbers" does not mean the original engine.
Oct 20, 2026 · 12:04
So was NCRS wrong in one of their judging events or is it up in the air if there is an issue with the engines marks? Would like to bid but now nervous?? That is why I like the forums here to educate less knowledgeable collectors

Grenning won’t do certifications anymore for cars in active auctions.
It’s so easy to submit to him and only takes 1-2 weeks. All corvette dealers know this.

Hi, Photo 505 is the first page of the October 2011 judging. Page 506 is the second page.
Oct 15, 2026 · 00:49
I don't see Page 1 of the October 2011 judging Mechanical section posted. Would be of interest to show the judges findings regarding the pad during that event. Broach marks are very defined in the photos just posted. Hard to imagine that it would be called out as it is on the oldest judging sheet.
Oct 15, 2026 · 00:00
The presence of broach marks or non-presence of broach. Marks has always been used as the litmus test for original engines versus restamped blocks in my experience. I think a certification from Al Grenning would be a great idea to bolster the sale.
Oct 14, 2026 · 23:27
An Al Grenning certification on the engine pad would help the sale. If you send him pictures he can evaluate it.

Hi, I did some additional research and used a magnifying glass to review the NCRS judging sheet. You are correct—the notation reads “Absence of Broach Marks,” and 38 points were deducted for the engine stamping-pad surface finish. However, it is important to note that **no points were deducted for either the engine assembly stamping or the VIN derivative**, both of which match the car's identification. My understanding is that the deduction reflects the judge's inability to identify the expected factory machining marks on the stamping pad. Interestingly, this observation was not noted in the other NCRS judging reports. I cannot speak to what a particular judge saw or did not see 15 years ago. However, in the interest of transparency, I have taken additional close-up photographs of the engine stamping pad, with as much clarity and detail as possible, so prospective buyers can examine the surface and markings for themselves. I believe the machining marks are visible in these photographs, but I will leave that determination to those reviewing them. What I can confirm is that the engine identification numbers match the vehicle, and I am not aware of any evidence indicating that the engine numbers have been altered or tampered with.

@Dmazor
I believe that the score sheet shows that you received a deduction of 38 points for lack of broach marks as indicated by the judge’s remarks. If there was no deduction there would be no number indicated in the box. You received a deduction of 42 points on that page.

Thank you all for the wonderful comments and kind words. This Corvette has truly been a labor of love, and I sincerely appreciate the enthusiasm and appreciation from fellow collectors and enthusiasts. Regarding the California black plates, there is quite a story behind them. They are genuine 1963 California plates, with a letter and number sequence corresponding to the same month and year the Corvette was manufactured. It took me several years to locate this exact set, and they certainly didn't come inexpensively! However, given the extraordinary lengths taken to restore this Corvette to its original factory condition, I felt that finding authentic, original 1963 California black plates was an important finishing touch. If you look closely at the plates, you'll notice the original embossed "63" in the upper right corner. That is why the registration stickers are displayed on separate tabs beneath the plates, preserving that original detail. Interestingly, I had almost forgotten another part of this search. Along the way, I managed to locate what I believe to be an original, **unused 1963 California DMV registration sticker** from that era. I'll upload a photograph of it, and the sticker will be included with the sale of the Corvette. For me, the joy of owning this car has been about far more than its appearance or the awards it has received. It has been about preserving the history, authenticity, and extraordinary craftsmanship of a truly special automobile. From the extensive restoration to tracking down the smallest period-correct details, every effort has been made to honor the car as it left the factory in 1963. After all these years, my greatest hope is that this dream car finds the perfect new home with someone who appreciates the care, dedication, and attention to detail that have gone into preserving it, and who will be an equally devoted steward for the next 20, 30, or even 50 years. Thank you again for all the wonderful comments. They genuinely mean a great deal to me.
