1953 Jaguar XK120 SE Roadster
Presentation
This 1953 Jaguar XK120 SE roadster is believed to have been delivered new through New York in January 1953 before being parked circa 1965. Chassis S673376 was acquired as a project out of Salt Lake City in 2005 by the current owner’s late father, who commissioned a body-off refurbishment by Ray’s Jaguar Restorations of Limerick, Pennsylvania, that was completed in 2006. Finished in Pastel Green over Suede Green leather, the car is powered by a 3.4-liter inline-six mated to a four-speed manual transmission. It is accompanied by a Fawn soft top with matching side curtains and is further equipped with dual SU carburetors and a Falcon stainless-steel exhaust system. This XK120 SE roadster is now offered on dealer consignment with a collection of tools, parts invoices, pre-refurbishment photographs, historical ownership documents, a copy of the Jaguar Heritage Trust Production Record Trace certificate, a Fédération Internationale des Véhicules Anciens (FIVA) identification card, and a Pennsylvania title in the owner’s name.
The selling dealer tells us that rust repair was performed before the body was stripped and repainted in its original Pastel Green finish as part of the 2005 to 2006 refurbishment. Exterior details include a removable Fawn soft top with matching side curtains as well as tri-bar headlights, a split windshield, and footwell vents. Scratches are noted on the bodywork behind the passenger compartment.
The 16″ chrome wire wheels are secured by knock-off hubs and mounted with 185-width Vredestein Sprint Classic tires. The XK120 was factory equipped with an independent front suspension with telescopic-type hydraulic shock absorbers along with semi-elliptical rear leaf springs and Girling hydraulic rear shock absorbers. Stopping power is provided by four-wheel drums.
The cabin was re-trimmed in the course of the refurbishment. It features bucket seats upholstered in Suede Green leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Additional interior appointments include a dashboard-mounted rearview mirror, a passenger-side grab handle, lap belts, and door map pockets.
The four-spoke steering wheel sits ahead of Smiths instrumentation including a reverse-sweep 6k-rpm tachometer with an inset analog clock as well as a 140-mph speedometer and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 67k miles, approximately 1k of which were added under current ownership.
The 3.4-liter DOHC inline-six was factory rated at 180 horsepower in SE specification. The engine breathes through dual SU carburetors and was reportedly rebuilt as part of the 2005 to 2006 refurbishment. The consigning dealer notes that work in preparation for the sale involved servicing the carburetors with replacing needles and seats, rebuilding the water pump, re-coring the radiator, and replacing the lower radiator hoses as well as the camshaft and breather cover gaskets. A manual choke control switch has been added.

@Capt._Doug I was mostly joking - the point being you don't need to be traditionally "tall" to feel tall in the cabin of an XK120. That's in no way specific to this car, as lots of 50s cars aren't known for being particularly ergonomic inside. As I say in the video, with how good this car looks and sounds going down the road, you'll quickly forget about the cabin space.

@davidxk, as always your knowledge is 'spot-on' about the colors. Both Pastel Green and a Pastel Blue offered over the years and a metallic version of each was in the mix for awhile too, do you know if Jaguar ever offered up a metallic version of the Willow Green color used in the 60s? @ForzaCarCompanyPA, a great car here and whoever built the engine did really well setting the valve lash on that motor I have seldom heard a DOHC engine sound that good.

I've been asked a couple times about the manual choke switch. I've included a photo here to show its location, under the dash on the passenger side. It's very easily operated from the driver's seat - you can see me doing it in the beginning of the video. When flicked away from the driver, the choke is on. It's very easy to use, and is super useful to get around the poorly judged automatic choke these had as standard.

@RedBaronPA Thanks for your question. These tires were installed when the car was restored and carry 2006 date codes. You wouldn't know their age by looking at them - they exhibit zero signs of dry rot or flat spotting. They will suffice for gentler use but anyone intending to drive them hard should consider replacing them. If the next owner would like new tires installed prior to taking delivery, we can assist with those arrangements.

@tenbears Thanks for your question. Yes, the owner of the car opted for the stronger 60-spokes during the restoration considering his intention was to use the car for road rallies. Thanks for the compliments on the car, it certainly deserves the love its getting.

@Architect14 Thanks for your question! It sounds like it's coming from the clutch pedal itself. The lapel mic is picking the sound up particularly well for some reason, it's not that noticeable when you're in it.

@davidxk You are absolutely right.
Jaguar colors are a special topic. I consulted the book *Jaguar: The Complete Story* by Heiner Stertkamp—a long-standing member of the Jaguar Association Germany (JAG)—which contains a list of all Jaguar colors from 1930 to the present day.
Pastel Green metallic 1949–1952, code D3108
Pastel Green 1952–1956, code J877, Q1081, or Q1081/1
We should all consult reference literature more often.

@bordeaux, @Hackberry, I agree both the Heritage Certificate on this one lists the Pastel Green color and if I remember correctly on the '52 auction that Certificate listed the original color as red. Personally this color on this car reminds me a lot of the later color Willow Green used on my '67 3.8S. The color on the '52 definitely has some silver metallic added to it but I don't think Jaguar was using metallic or 'opalescent' colors during those years in the 50s. I am thinking of the Jaguar Opalescent Blue used in the early 60s, however I have never seen an Opalescent Pale Green on any car with the exception of what is probably a 'custom' color used on the '52 which I like very much.
Oct 5, 2026 · 02:07
@bordeaux The ‘52 sure appears metallic. I’m by no means a Jaguar expert but I noticed that difference as well. A different commenter on the ‘52 auction @dcusick1960 uses the acronym “PGM” which I assume stands for “Pastel Green Metallic.” The listing does not make the distinction between Pastel green and Pastel Green Metallic but it appears that there are two distinct colors. Both beautiful but I give the slight edge to this non-metallic hue. Looks absolutely stunning with the interior finish. Hard to go wrong either way I think.

This car brings back strong memories. Sometime around 1953-1954 I rode my bicycle on Conklin Ave. in Binghamton, N.Y. to a furniture upholstery shop. The owner had one with the same color. I was already in love with the silver version but this one made me think twice. I can still hear the engine, smell the leather, and stare at it for hours. The owner gave me a fuse from the car declaring "your first step in building a car" or words to that effect. Please do not every change that color because it is as authentic as it can be. Joe
Oct 4, 2026 · 07:52
This is a fantastic example. The desirable color and the SE spec make it quite special. Combine that with the low mileage and the really well done restoration, you have yourself an extraordinary car. I have been thinking about selling my 1951, but the market has me reluctant. This one should tell us what these cars are worth and this one should fetch a premium. Good luck with the auction.
