Presentation

This 1967 Shelby Mustang GT500 is one of 2,048 fastbacks produced for the model year and was restored by Cobra Automotive in the early 2000s. The car recently underwent a major engine service in which the 428ci Police Interceptor V8 was removed, rebuilt, dyno tested, and reinstalled, with approximately $25,000 in documented work. Finished in bright white with blue stripes, the car also features its Shelby-specific roll bar, functional hood scoops, ducktail rear spoiler, 15″ Magstar alloy wheels, front disc brakes, power steering, and a four-speed manual transmission. This GT500 is now offered in Connecticut by the selling dealer with service records and a clean Montana title.

The car was finished in Wimbledon White (4) from the factory and has been refinished in bright white with dual Shelby Blue stripes and GT500 side stripes. Exterior features include a fiberglass ventilated hood with functional air scoops, fender and sail-panel scoops, fender extensions, inboard grille-mounted high beams, a ducktail rear spoiler, and dual exhaust outlets.

The 15″ five-spoke Magstar alloy wheels wear Shelby Cobra center caps and are mounted with BFGoodrich tires. GT500-specific suspension equipment includes heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front with heavy-duty leaf springs at the rear. The car is equipped with power steering, and braking is handled by front discs and rear drums. In August 2026, the rear suspension received new shackle kits, U-bolts, and bushings.

The cabin features front bucket seats and a folding Sport Deck rear seat trimmed in black vinyl, along with a retro-style radio, front shoulder harnesses, a Shelby-specific roll bar with inertia-reel seatbelts, and a Hurst shifter.

The woodgrain steering wheel fronts a 140-mph speedometer, 8,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for fuel level, coolant temperature, oil pressure, and amperage. The five-digit odometer has been reset and now shows ~1,100 miles, approximately 100 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

The 428ci Police Interceptor V8 was factory equipped with dual four-barrel Holley carburetors and was rated at 335 horsepower and 420 lb-ft of torque. It was originally specified with the Extra Cooling Package and a heavy-duty battery. Cobra Automotive recently removed and rebuilt the engine before dyno testing and reinstalling it. The service included replacement of the valve-cover gaskets, fuel hoses, fuel-sending unit, heater core, and battery, along with flushing the radiator.

@daveb9 thank you, I guess I always assumed the aluminum intakes were added by Shelby since the regular 428s had the heavy iron intakes, thanks for clearing that up

@GraveDecision The 67 GT500 came from Ford as a Q code with a 428 Special Interceptor installed at the San Jose factory. When the engine was originally assembled, at the Dearborn Assembly plant, it was painted with the aluminum, 2x4 intake already installed. Shelby did not alter the engine on the GT500 like they did on the GT350. The 67 GT500 was the only Mustang that was built by Ford in 67 with a 428 engine.

@GraveDecision, all of the 67s started at Ford’s San Jose plant, saying Ford had nothing/little to do with the 67s is false.

@coralsnake over spray thoughts? TIA
Oct 21, 2026 · 15:57
Im not trying to be a pest, but the over spray explanation doesn't make sense. Ford assembled, painted, and shipped the engines, Shelby added their valve covers and intake AFTER, they didnt add a second coat of paint. I have worked on/restored 100s of Shelbysand Mustangs. This is the first time I have ever heard that. So either someone told you wrong to cover their mistakes, or the reason for the overspray is different.

Im seeing alot of comments about "Ford" did this and this, this is a 67, all 2000 cars were assembled in LA at Shelby. As far as I know Ford had little to nothing to do with these cars, in fact most of them having crooked emblems supports that.
Oct 21, 2026 · 15:20
@2buck, sounds like you are referring to the decal indicating that the car was fit with a “No Spin Differential” from Detroit Automotive. My 67 GT500 has that decal on glove box door … was there when my dad and I bought the car in 1977.

in1981 we had a 67 in the garage for 3 month that belonged to my dad's carpool friend. the Shelby had 38k miles. it had a decal on the dash on how to engage the Detroit Locker, i have not seen such a decal on several 67's that have been on the web over the last few years. was that somehow my =imagination?

That overspray is correct. Ford installed the aluminum intake on these then painted the engine. The GT350s had the aluminum intake installed at Shelby, thus have no overspray, but they reused the intake bolts. Those then would have blue heads on the bolts.

@BringsThunder
Ford's engine painting process was production-oriented, not a concours restoration. Factory overspray, uneven coverage, and paint on adjoining components was pretty common. When the engine was painted after the rebuild it was painted in a manner to replicate the way it came off the assembly line. So yes the price actually reflect that overspray….

I just saw a green one sell at a dealer in Fort Lauderdale. I was an idiot. The car was on eBay for a couple weeks. The guy wanted to trade for a Porsche. The dealer traded him a Porsche for it.
Dealer sold the car after a great detail
For 399k. I’m dying to see where this goes. Wish I Could bid , but I’m not ready for a divorce , and I have a 68 GT500 conv in my garage , #42 according to registry. But man I love the white 67’s. Beautiful car. I want to see where it goes. I don’t think it’s even warmed up to where it will end up ,

Awesome car, I just finished a 1967 coupe nothing original about it. I took it to different shows no matter where I took it. I would usually win first place beautiful car but right after I finished it I went and looked at it in 1967 Shelby, big block Shelby car like this one except it had air and a console. It was a four speed car the guy that owned It was said he would rather trade than sell. He wanted my 67 for his 67. I just finished my the car a few months earlier and I said no…..what an idiot I was fast forward 20 years. I seen one like it on A Trailer in my area of town stopped the guy talk to him about it and through the long conversation discovered it was the same car that he just bought….if I had known the car was still there I would have went back…..I just assumed all those years that the car had been sold….and again I thought what an idiot I was…..beautiful car!!!

@Sully6: I have seen one auction on this site where it did look like a couple of the bidders were friends of the seller. The car, a Shelby GT350, auctioned twice- both times it went RNM. I don't think that is what's happening here though- just 2 guys that really want this car. As we near the end, there are bound to be others that come out of the woodwork. Good luck to you.

Yes, I agree decals are no big deal..... until you get it home and find out they are under the clear....I don't understand why on so many cars, commenters rave about a wonderful restoration, without any regard for accuracy. So that being said, if a restoration is not accurate, what is it really ? Especially on a car like this with a strong monetary value.
HG52
Oct 17, 2026 · 15:06
@brweh: I agree with @surf-n-drag, mis-applied stripe kits are common on these cars. I personally find it kind of strange that a guy that is going to charge you $20K or $30K for a paint job can't be bothered to get it right, but it wouldn't deter me from buying the car- not by a long shot. As for the color of this car, apparently the owner opted for this color, in lieu of Wimbledon White. It's his car, he painted it the color he wanted and that wouldn't deter me from buying the car either. What bothers me is comments like "nitpicking from the cheap seats"- really, is that necessary? This site is open to comments and, if you can't take the heat, get out of the kitchen.
Oct 17, 2026 · 03:00
Side stripe issue needs to be put in context, we now know that the center stripe of the three should not be present aft of the model designation (i.e., GT350/ GT500) but 20, 30, 40 years ago it was not so well understood AND the stripe kits available were for both 1967 and 1968 models….when you handed your painter a kit, they just applied 1968-style. In the end, unless you are going concourse, who cares, it’s a relatively cheap fix on a six figure car (mine’s been wrong for over 40 years and I’m sure it hasn’t adversely affected the driving experience). I certainly hope no buyer is discouraged because of a misapplied decal! GLWTA!

@HG52
It’s really unnecessary beyond (at the very most) saying the paint isn’t quite as accurate as the original was. If the vehicle was fraudulent, I’d understand any all criticism. However, it isn’t. The new paint just so happens to be not a perfect match to what they did almost 60 years ago. It’s a beautiful Shelby, and well restored. $20K or so could get you that perfect Wimbledon white if wanted…or go full Gone 60 Elenor. It’s a beautiful Shelby

@brweh: The stripe issue comes up often. The stripes on the $300K '67 GT500 that sold here a while back were incorrect and the same seller, @RPM9000, made sure to show them applied correctly before the end of the auction. Just as you can paint the car whatever color you want, or put the stripes on upside down, you can also comment as you wish, especially if you know what you're talking about. It's still a free country.

Sully6, great question. On a 1967 Shelby, the transmission would have been stamped with the original Ford VIN, not the Shelby serial number. Shelby American assigned its own serial number, which is why you’ll find the original Ford VIN underneath the Shelby identification tag. And to answer your question yes that Ford VIN on the trans matches the VIN underneath the Shelby identification tag.

Per Dave Mathew’s (SAAC registrar) and my countless experiences of 67’ Shelby’s in the shop, the engine date code has been anywhere from 1-4 months prior to the build date of the car. Here is the transmission stamp. I blurred out the last 4 digits of the 7R02Q #. That is the Ford Vin is proprietary to the Shelby Club and the car owners. If anyone would like to have more confirmation on this I can put you in touch with the SAAC team

These cars are extensively researched on the SAAC forum and The Shelby Research Group. Engine block is casted 128 days prior to assembly. Per the SRG, cars that were observed in this time frame had a casting date of 52 days prior to assembly. We are still waiting on confirmation of the VIN being present on the bottom of the transmission. If not present it’s safe to say the car does not have its original drivetrain (including engine, bj/bk carbs, trans and spec rear diff).

The driving video actually startled me right at the very get-go and I mean that in a good way. Sorry to say I've gotten used to the feathery-throttled parking-lot putts passing for 'driving vids' in a lot of hi-po listings so it was refreshing to see the driver actually give this listing the spurs then keep it up. Such a strategy certainly served its purpose: Now I want the damned car more than ever. ;^)

When it was restored in the early 2000’s by Cobra Automotive , the current owner at the time asked for a white that was slightly brighter then Wimbledon. It’s a subtle difference but certainly not unpleasant! Hope this clarifies.

A great early model 67 with the inner mounted lights in an ideal color combo. Dyno sheet is great. You can really see why a 428 is a good street motor with lots of torque down low, but already losing hp at 4400 rpm and nothing happening 5k and above.... right where the better race engine R code 427 is just getting warmed up. I remember this car being Acapulco blue quite a few decades ago. Nice to see it restored back to original color. Amazing how certain cars come back around for sale. Not certain but believe 2 brothers were original owners.

Looks like it needs a SPEC center section. I may know someone. 🤔

It’s believed to be the original engine which was removed to be refreshed and reinstalled

Will you take wife’s on trade?

@seller So it states the motor was pulled and rebuild but it doesn’t mention if it’s the original motor that the car came with or if it had been replaced at some point? Can you clarify?

Not all entertainment, it’s useful to the gauge the market value when interested in certain models. Then it becomes a valuable asset for making expensive decisions for purchase.
