302-Powered 1967 Ford Mustang Coupe Holman-Moody FIA-Spec Race Car

This 1967 Ford Mustang coupe is one of approximately 375 examples manufactured at Ford’s Lima, Peru, assembly plant starting in October 1966, and it was purchased new by Limeño road rally racer Cristobal Galjuf, who drove regionally under the name “Batman” to hide his racing activities from his father. The car was driven daily through 1971, when it was shipped to Holman–Moody (H&M) of Charlotte, North Carolina, for conversion to an “FIA-spec” racer, and it was campaigned by Galjuf in six road rallies across Central and South America during the racing season that followed, including first overall in the 3,000-kilometer Frontera-Frontera that was held on the Carretera Panamericana through the Andes Mountains of Chile and Peru. A refresh was subsequently performed at Holman–Moody in anticipation of continued racing, but the car was soon retired, changing hands several times before landing in Lima’s Museo de Autos Antiguos Colección Nicolini, where it was discovered and purchased in partially refurbished condition by a US collector in 2011. The restoration was completed by Cameron Bishop at Cuttingedge Hotrods and Fabrication of Phoenix, Arizona, in 2020. This Holman-Moody-built Mustang race car was purchased by its current owner in 2025 and is now offered by Foreign Affairs Motorsports, a BaT Local Partner, on consignment in Florida with documentation and a bill of sale.
It is believed that the car was flown in 1971 to Miami, where Holman-Moody picked up the car for transport to their facility and completion of the build. The work by Holman-Moody is claimed to have topped $20k and was finished in 1972. Upon completion, Galjuf reportedly rented Road Atlanta raceway to test the car, and following that test, the car was disassembled into parts and flown to Peru to avoid detection. Galjuf then raced the car using 400-sequence race numbers, achieving several wins before retiring from racing.
Restoration work was completed by Cameron Bishop at Cuttingedge Hotrods and Fabrication of Phoenix, Arizona, in 2020. The acid-dipped body is finished in red with race livery and Holman-Moody decals, and exterior details include X-taped headlights, a lift-off hood, hood and trunk pins, a left-side mirror, chrome bumpers, and side-exit exhaust outlets.
The H&M Talladega Super Speedway front end makes use of reinforced and gusseted A-arms with dual shocks and custom valving, while an H&M Trans-Am setup with dual shocks and rally springs is employed out back. 3½-inch-wide front and 2½-inch-wide rear drum brakes were also fitted.
The car rolls on gold-painted H&M double-center steel wheels mounted with 8.00×15″ Goodyear Blue Streak Sports Car Special racing tires.
The cabin houses a roll cage and stock bucket seats wrapped in black vinyl with bolt-on bolsters and Lifeline safety harnesses.

That’s right, you saw it in August of 2022 when I bought it & brought it to the track with my Porsche race team at Laguna Seca! I had to preserve this car & not modify it into something else. I have plenty of other race cars & Shelby’s laying around to mess with. But this thing is so cool & has such a great story!

@Ranchero65, during the 1965-1973 period, besides the USA, Mustangs were built in Mexico, the Netherlands, Peru, and Venezuela. Perhaps the most coveted are those that were built in Mexico and subsequently converted into “Shelby de Mexicos” with Carroll Shelby’s blessing/involvement. Some Shelby de Mexicos were also raced in cross country races in Mexico…really a shame we know so little here about the epic cross country race scene in Latin America. I know a brace of 1965 GT350 R-models as well as some street models were exported by Shelby American to Peru for such racing…make the Mille Miglia and Targa Florio seem tame!

The car was almost empty when I bought it so I had my race team fill it up with the highest octane. I haven’t had to refill it since nor do I know what was in the car prior. Cameron Bishop, who restored the car, would know more about the suspension & brake components. I believe they restored to how it was in period. Huge drum brakes. He’s from Cutting Edge Motorsports. The car was restored by the previous owner before me.

As the owner of the car, I would like to clarify a few things. I bought this in August of 2021. Being that the car was born in Peru & turned into a race car in America, I was keen on the car being adopted from Peru myself, growing up in America. I’ve had it on track at Targa 66 in 2022 to shake it down. I wanted to turn it into a race car for maybe HSR or SVRA but I realized I would take the originality of this unique car away & turn it into something else it is not. I have to respect the history of this car. It’s very special car in the hearts of many. With many other cars to play with, I showed it everywhere, including Amelia Island in 2024 where I placed ahead of a Porsche 906 & a Dino 206 SP! It makes great noises & has been a lot of fun. I filled the huge 36 gallon tank up with 118 Octane racing fuel at a cost of $568 & frequently fire the car up to let it run & not sit too long. The car always starts right up! It’s always brought smiles to everyone who sees it & I start it frequently at shows because the sound is so good! It’s important to me to share my cars with enthusiasts. After buying the car, I did a lot of research & found that the some of the original owner’s family lived nearby me. I reached out to through social media & got in touch with the grandson. He & his father lived nearby. They reached out to the original owner & we all met at the Miami Grand Prix in 2025! He was there along with his wife, children & their children. It was a very special moment! A few days later, I got to reunite them with the car! Everyone’s heart was full!

Can anyone comment on the shocks on the front sway bar? Today it's just gut and start from scratch vs modifying OEM suspension parts. They look like pep boys shocks but I'm sure HM had them built to spec or?

Looking at various websites that cater to historic TA and stock cars. Could you provide the source for brake drums, brake shoes and any unique suspension-related components? If there are no known resources this could reflect on the price. Custom fabrication of consumables can get expensive. The current HM website does not look promising.

Perhaps the seller could define "FIA spec". I'm assuming this means the car was restored to that standard for the period, but the car has no current FIA papers? When was the last time the car was on track? Has the engine been rebuilt again? Or same since 1991? Human built it in 91, but was it rebuilt in 2020? What the anticipated life of the engine and trans? Any spares? Sold on bill of sale, I suppose someone could title the car. Seems closer to cars and coffee than the race track?

@Southside_Ronnie Although I trailer my 67 Mustang Trans Am car to the track, I do occasionally drive it here in Kalifornia to car shows if within 20 or so miles. If lights, mirrors are all present, the only real issue that will probably get you pulled over are the big numbers and big exhaust. With the big bias-ply tires and race suspension setup/tuning, tram railing is an issue and can be scarry at times.

Another observation: a race through the Andes is no joke. The elevation in some locations would make Pike's Peak look like a picnic. There would have to be some serious air/fuel mixture adjustments made.

I knew Ford exported Mustangs to Germany (and called them T-5) but I did not know they built and Mustangs outside the US. Question for Mustang historians: Other than Peru, what other countries produced Mustangs?
I assume the original factory data plate is long gone, but I'd be curious to know what the VIN of a Peru produced Mustang looks like. I know from my Falcon days that Canadian produced Falcons intended for the Canadian market have data plates that are WAY different that US market Falcons.

When you think about the fact that vintage race cars like this had 4 wheel drum brakes, and very little in the way of safety equipment, you realize the stones that those drivers had to push these cars to their limits.
Man, this thing is awesome. I'll join the chorus of hopefuls that it gets put back into action, rather than ending up on static display again.

Vintage racing Mustangs just have that extra "coolness" factor. Love the history on this one especially, and I particularly like the fact that it still retains several of it's factory-style parts, like the lights, bumpers, interior dashboard, glovebox, doors, and door panels etc. Can't wait to hear what this one's loud pedal has to say! Fire it up! =)

I have a 2014 Holman Moody TDF Mustang. H&M was the king of racing back In the day. Lee still has shop in Charlotte.
