1968 Porsche 912 Coupe 5-Speed
Presentation
This Tangerine 1968 Porsche 912 coupe was cosmetically restored in 2017 and is powered by a 1.6-liter flat-four equipped with Weber carburetors and paired with a five-speed manual transaxle. The car is equipped with 15″ perforated steel wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, bumper guards, and bucket seats with black leatherette upholstery. It has reportedly been in the Cincinnati, Ohio, area for more than 15 years, and the current owner purchased it in 2012 and has since added approximately 700 miles. This SWB 912 coupe is now offered on dealer consignment with a Porsche Certificate of Authenticity, the owner’s manual, a tool roll, and an Ohio title.
The Karmann-built body was stripped to bare metal and repainted in its factory shade of Tangerine (6809) by MetalKraft Coachwerkes of Cincinnati, Ohio, as part of the 2017 refurbishment. Exterior details include sugar-scoop headlight surrounds, bumper guards, a retractable antenna, and a single exhaust outlet. Light scratches are noted on the window trim.
The 15″ perforated steel wheels are mounted with 165-series Michelin XZX tires. The car features independent front and rear suspension along with disc brakes at all four corners, and it was originally specified with Koni dampers.
The 2+2 cabin was refurbished in 2017 with replacement black leatherette upholstery, carpeting, headliner, dashboard components, steering wheel, and door panels. Appointments include front-seat headrests, lap and shoulder belts, rear vent windows, and an AM/FM radio, though the latter is inoperative.
The four-spoke steering wheel fronts VDO instrumentation including a 7k-rpm tachometer, a 120-mph speedometer, auxiliary gauges, and an analog clock. The five-digit odometer shows 48k miles, though it is believed to be inaccurate, and approximately 700 miles were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.
The 1.6-liter flat-four was factory rated at 90 horsepower and 90 lb-ft of torque and is equipped with Weber carburetors. The engine was removed from the car in connection with the 2017 refurbishment, although the extent of the engine work performed at that time is not specified. The selling dealer believes work was performed on the engine under previous ownership, though no records for any work exist.

tangerine is a terrific 901 color and the 912 is the best short wheelbase to buy, handles much better than a 911. PLUS 68 was the first year of the dual master cylinder

@HudsonOH992gts, that’s obviously not the original oil pressure gauge. It’s a fairly simple and valuable upgrade. Originally there was just a low pressure idiot light. Every 616 engine should have this upgrade.

@RobThePorscheMan I don't believe cost was the deciding factor to use aftermarket wheels, as no expense was spared on the restoration, they were both done by high-end shops. And the quality of the work shows! My presumption is it was done due to convenience and to save time, I'm sure the aftermarket wheel cost was comparable to having the originals re-chromed.

Here is the driving video. The camera picked up some wind noise which I was not aware of while recording. The video demonstrates it runs strong, clutch works excellent, and it goes through all of the gears nicely. I take it on the freeway 70+ mph. I will post a separate video for cold start and running.

We called the Porsche dealership that installed the Webers, and they found the original Solex carburetors and air cleaners, so they are now included with the car! @RobThePorscheMan Yes, the original wheels are included and all 4 of them have the correct 1968 date codes. @NC_TRACKRAT The new wheels and tires were installed on the car towards the end of the restoration, and have only covered 700 miles. They show no signs of dry rot or cracking and will be fine to take to car-related events as you mention. If the new owner plans to do a long trip they will have the option of installing tires.

@Rhino 01, it's your money and, if it's your car, you get to do whatever you want with it but it would tend to cause it to depreciate rather than appreciate. This 912 should really be driven in fair weather for pleasure and car-related events.

Unless I am mistaken, date codes on the Michelin tires indicate that they are about 10 years old (11/16) and the spare is 30 years old (5/95). IMHO, a long road trip would not be advisable.

@Jtorres89 The paint is base coat/clear coat. @raytech This example has been very well cared for and there are no known issues that would have me tell you this car could not handle the road trip. On the other hand it is a 58 year old machine, and that is a cross-country trip so unforeseen things are always possible. That's just part of the experience of owning and enjoying these classic cars.

Traded my trombone to a retired professional trombonist who (somehow) was without a horn for a '55 Triumph TR2 that had lost a T-bone battle with a Buick! After college I bought a used '69 912 that had been the demonstrator for the Porsche-Audi dealer in Amarillo, TX. Burgundy red. Same wheels as this Tangerine beauty. To this day regret selling it. The first wife, the infamous World War One, nagged me til I sold it ... 🙄

As I have opined many times, a 912 is much easier to restore and maintain than a 356, which I have also done, because the 9-series cars were designed and engineered to ease production which downstream connotes to ease of maintenance. There are a few spots (e.g front & rear valances) than are prone to rust but otherwise the design and engineering of the 912 is superior, at least from the follow-on maintenance perspective, to the 356 (if not quite its equal in fit and finish). Because of the changes between 356 to 912 the latter was less expensive all around to build and thus generally easier on the wallet, even today. This example, however, will prove the contra-point as it is truly a unique 912.

@LouFifer - Trombone! Great choice! Whether it was trombone #1, trombone #5 or one of the ones in between! Played trombone in HS band. Had a great band leader, Bruce Cook, who went to Clemson. • One of the wonderful things about Lawrence Welk is he never lost his humility and and always took care of his crew. Success never spoiled him.

LW's key to success was simply that he took good care of his employees such that they never wanted to leave his band, when quite the opposite was the norm (still is) with musician's. He knew that the key to any successful organization is the sum of its individuals. He also knew what American's fresh from WWII wanted to hear to make them happy. As a family we watched the LW Show every week. I too played Trombone in several Swing Bands since my retirement from USN in 1994.

I and a close team of restorers did a complete restoration on a '65 production 912 SR Coupe. We turned every nut, bolt and surface from old to new. It has since sold a couple of times for good money. This one should go for >$150 in my estimation.

@56PackardMan - My Dad started playing under Lawrence Welk's baton while still a High School bandsman in 1937 but continued as a "sit-in sub" through 1941. As my Dad's story goes, he also ran the "bubble machine". The LW back story is very interesting as he came from nothing, had very little formal education but died a multi-millionaire, all during a time when many swing bands were competing for every town's Saturday night dances. Oddly it was the vinyl recording of the many swing tunes that spelled the demise of such a noble American icon as the 17-piece Big Band. Yet if "a-oneuh, a-twouh" made sense to him and his band it eventually made for many $$ of success for LW, originally from a small subsistence farm in North Dakota. Another of my Dad's stories, told to all four of us kids, as we each approached 5th grade was "... 5th grade is when you are meant to take up an instrument and play in the school band. Now you know that I played with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra so I know a lot about music and can teach you anything you need to know and I will give you the choice of three instruments: Trombone, Trombone, or Trombone". Some of my siblings chose the 2nd or 3rd but as the eldest I chose the 1st option. None of us, in 5th grade, could reach beyond 4th position on the slide but he taught us "alternate positions" to get all the notes. Each Christmas my Dad would write up Christmas Carol arrangements for 5 Trombones, they probably were not very good but we were a regular hit around the neighborhood.

@rbmojo My thoughts exactly...a Tangerine Dream. Besides its meaning, a great New Age synthesizer band from Germany from the 80s! They provided the instrumental soundtrack to "Risky Business" which happened to introduce that famous 928 Porsche ;-) This 912 is truly a beautiful example and love the color!

My dad played tbn with the Lawrence Welk Orchestra in Chicago's "Trianon" ballroom before going off to WWII and then with a couple of lesser known traveling swing bands after returning from the Pacific Theater. Like this fine '68 912 on the highways, Nothing on the air waves compares these days.
