1962 Jaguar XKE Series I 3.8 Roadster 5-Speed
Presentation
This 1962 Jaguar XKE Series I is a US-spec roadster that was exported to Europe, where it was refurbished in 2015. Modifications added at that time included a five-speed manual transmission, electronic power steering, an electronic ignition system, and LED lighting. Refinished in black over gray leather, the car is powered by a 3.8-liter inline-six and is equipped with a limited-slip differential, a blue mohair soft top, a soft top boot, enclosed headlights, 15″ wire-spoke wheels, power-assisted disc brakes, dual side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, a Dietz stereo with Bluetooth, and air conditioning. This XKE Series I roadster was acquired by the current owner in 2022 and is now offered on their behalf by the seller with Jaguar-branded luggage and UK registration.
The Series I E-Types were equipped with covered headlights and taillights mounted above the chrome rear bumpers. This example was repainted black during the aforementioned refurbishment and is equipped with a blue mohair soft top, a soft top boot, enclosed headlights, LED lighting, a louvered clamshell hood, wraparound chrome bumpers, bright trim, dual side mirrors, triple windshield wipers, and dual exhaust outlets.
The 15″ wire wheels are secured by two-eared knock-offs and are mounted with Vredestein tyres measuring 205/65. Braking is provided by four-wheel discs with inboard-mounted rear rotors. Uprated sway bars have reportedly been added along with electric power steering.
The cabin features bucket seats upholstered in gray leather along with color-coordinated door panels and carpets. Interior appointments include textured aluminum dash trim, a sliding rearview mirror, a Dietz retro-style radio with Bluetooth, and air conditioning.
The wood-rimmed steering wheel frames a Smiths 160-mph speedometer and 6k-rpm tachometer, while auxiliary gauges for coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage are located in the center of the dashboard. The five-digit odometer shows 56k miles, approximately 3k of which were added under current ownership.
The vehicle is being sold on its UK V5C registration, which serves as an ownership document in the United Kingdom.

@davidXK Thank you for your comment. The data plate from the restoration pictures was in very good condition and I believe it has badly faded or as you rightfully indicate, could be damaged from fluid. See photo attached. The Restoration was undertaken in Germany and was incredibly well documented in photographs.

@detaildave Thank you for your feedback, looking at the extensive restoration photographic record, the bumpers have always been at that angle. We are happy to look into re-aligning them for the new buyer

@shahabs Thank you for your question, all gauges are fully functional and the air-condition is very impressive and cold

@Drumond You have a very sharp eye to spot the pristine data plate in photo #112, presumably taken during the restoration! On closer inspection I believe that this is the same reproduction data plate shown on the car now in photo #103. It has either been artificially aged to make it look original, or been subject to some "fluid abuse" causing the paint to come off. There are multiple indications that the current plate is a reproduction. Some of them are: the paint on the originals doesn't come off like this; the alignment of the header text is awry relative to the column headers beneath (check out the alignment of "Coventry" and "Engine No." and compare it with a genuine plate; the character stampings are much better aligned and more evenly spaced than on any data plate from the factory. I also have to agree with @DetailDave that those front bumpers are some of the most crooked I've seen. Clearly a lot of money was spent on the restoration, so it's curious that this was overlooked by whoever paid for it. The good news is that it can be fixed, as can the other flaws. To get the most interest, particularly from the US, the seller would be well advised to provide detailed, well lit, photos of the underside of the car. GLWTA.

A pretty car to look at for sure, so many anomalies, oddities here. An older restoration that hasn't been stored completely dry enough to preserve chrome and some lighter painted surfaces. I can't stop looking at the poorly aligned front bumpers, that job takes hours, I get it, but yikes. I know I'm being critical, I get frustrated when I see an early E not put together with absolute patience, pride and commitment. Sorry to be judging your car, it is a great color and beautiful, for sure, I'm just disappointed with those who did the work I suppose. Good luck with your auction.

Are all the gauges functioning properly, and does the air conditioning blow cold air?

Good morning everyone,
Apologies for not responding. The car was imported from America as a project into Germany. The car was subsequently treated to a nut and bolt restoration and comprehensive upgrade programme which included the air-conditioning, electric power steering, handling kit. The car lived in Switzerland before being imported into the UK. The data plate for the vehicle is original and not re-manufactured. The plate, as a result, is weathered. The brake master cylinder is the original type. That was the owners preference. Which has been rebuilt in the last 3 months as part of its latest service. The paint is a subtle metallic which really looks the part in the sun. The car would a US buyer having benefitted from the desirable performance and usability upgrade package. Do reach direct if you have any questions.

Lots of nice modifications and a great looking car! Even Series 2 air conditioning! I always loved the textured aluminum on the center console and dash on these early Series 1 cars! With all the modifications, why not upgrade the brake master cylinder/power brake booster to one from the 4.2 cars? I always thought those units were much better. Is that incorrect?

Eleven hours, many questions, and no response from seller.

The car's paint is covered in white dots. Is this just dust? I have never seen such a delapidated data plate before but in the bottom left picture of photos 112/114 the data plate looks prestine. Certainly for bidder in the USA much more information about this car is needed

Very stunning. The revised color combination is classic Jaguar. Best of all, the background photography of somewhere near London is beautiful. GLWTA

Interesting yet very beautiful color combination!

The car is heavily modded, so I'm curious about the odd brake fluid reservoirs, why they are reversed along with the heat shield and what the thing is attached behind the shield wing.

This is a color combination I didn't expect to like - Really Nice Build!! GLWTA
