1934 Ford Model 40 5-Window Coupe
Presentation
This full-fendered 1934 Ford Model 40 five-window coupe is powered by a 24-stud flathead V8 that has been modified with with Tattersfield heads, an Isky 77 camshaft, adjustable tappets, and a 2×2 intake with dual Strombergs, and the engine is linked to a C-4 automatic transmission. The car rides on wire-spoke wheels painted red and has a Super Bell front axle, a Vega steering box, a four-bar rear suspension, and a Ford 9″ rear end, and inside are air conditioning, auxiliary gauges, and a custom sound system. The car was reportedly awarded first place in the Early Street Coupe class at the 2020 Grand National Roadster Show. Purchased by the seller in 2026, and this Model 40 is now offered with a California title in the seller’s name listing the car as a 1934 Ford coupe.
The bodywork is painted black, and the car features cowl lights, yellow auxiliary lights, and a rumble seat.
The 16″ wire-spoke wheels are mounted with staggered BFGoodrich tires. The suspension setup includes a Super Bell front axle, Pete & Jakes front shocks, and a four-bar rear suspension with coilovers. A Vega steering box is also fitted, and braking is provided by power-assisted four-wheel drums.
The cabin features bench seating upholstered in beige fabric. Interior appointments include air conditioning, three-point seatbelts, a Kenwood head unit, and a double-bend floor shifter.
A Custom Autosound unit is mounted in the glove box along with auxiliary gauges.
The driver is provided a banjo-style steering wheel. The five-digit odometer shows 5,600 miles, approximately 800 of which were added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

Where is the battery? I could not find it to confirm 12 volts. The 1935 wheels are Kelsey-Hayes upgrades, not stock Ford.

Really sweet ride here. Love those old Fords with the fenders especially from 32 to 40. The design that never get old. And still a flathead engine. I have a 35 Ford 5 window coupe and would love to put AC in it but don't know where to get the brackets for a 21 stud engine for AC .

I've seen this great hotrod at the Pavilions car show in Scottsdale AZ back in the day 10 or 12 years ago. I remember seeing it at the Goodguys event there also. The guy that owned it was a true enthusiast that spared no expense it getting this car right. I think it deserves a fresh bid for good luck just in case it's the same car I saw in AZ!

It was sold to me as working but I couldn’t figure it out. I have all the books on it that came with the car. I put my own stereo in and new speakers in same place as old.

Very nice 5 window, good drive video, tells a lot. I don't hear the engine stressed at 70-75mph, meaning with a 3spd. auto. it must have tall gears in the differential, that totally good. An all-steel car in this driving condition as a flathead is excellent. Big value here.

Last comment on it but it is on top of the frame rail as I stated but the body hangs over the firewall and the frame where he welded it. It is a few inches longer there. I am aware of the * we all have the same information available. The title has it on it too.

Regarding previous comments about the serial number. It is not under the body but on top of left-hand upper frame. unless painted over it starts with a stamped * and then numbers. Ideally on the title, but this car was from Arizona and they may used an AZ DMV stamped tin application.

The VIN should be on top of the left frame rail just forward of the firewall. I may be able to be found but it would require scraping the paint off of the frame. The numbers are also stamped mid frame and at the top of the hump over the rear end.

Are the heads vintage or aftermarket and I assume they are stage 1. Rarely seen on a flathead today in my part or the country. A real plus in my opinion.

It runs great probably one of the best-running classic cars I’ve owned. During my ownership, I’ve driven it up and down the coast, being at the beach, and it has never felt like it was turning high RPM. I pay close attention to that because I prefer a relaxed cruising feel.
I asked the guy I bought it from about the VIN stamp. He believes it is on the frame near the driver’s side, beneath the body. I haven’t been able to locate it myself, but I had no trouble registering and titling the car with the documentation provided.

The car is all steel, with no fiberglass. I wasn’t involved in the build, so I can’t confirm whether every panel is original, but I believe it is based on the previous owner’s extensive collection, which was featured in magazines. The car has won awards and has been featured several times, as has its owner. I don’t know the paint color or brand, but the finish is brilliant and looks incredible in person.

How much, if any, is original Ford sheet metal? were any aftermarket body panels or fiberglass used in the build? Do you know when build was completed and is paint lacquer, enamel, or urethane?

What a beautiful piece of art! Done nicely with all the great pieces! My dad had a ‘34 in high school and his friend at the time was Robert Wagner. They drove that ‘34 all over L. A. I wish I knew where that car was now. I’m going to be watching this sale!! If it’s close to my budget, I will jump in. I can see myself driving this beauty!

Yes, Tattersfield. The pedal was the clutch he didn’t remove it it's solid and doesn’t move. I am unsure on gear ratio I will see if I can find it. Appreciate the comments!

What more could you ask for 34 Ford five Window it was my favorite plus it has air conditioning and Automatic Transmision. I wish this was closer.
