1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Fastback 4-Speed
Presentation
This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR fastback is one of 1,053 examples produced during a production run from April through July 1968. The car was delivered new to McCollum Motors of Dishman, Washington, finished in Highland Green over black with GT equipment, and it is powered by a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a 9″ rear axle with a limited-slip differential. Other features include a twin-scoop hood, side scoops, a rear spoiler, 15″ wheels, power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, Koni shocks, and a Philco push-button radio. The car was refinished in 1990, and throughout the early 1990s the previous owner of 31 years drove the car at Northern California road courses including Thunderhill Raceway, Sonoma Raceway, and Laguna Seca. The seller purchased it on BaT in July 2022, and it was previously offered on BaT in July 2026. This GT500KR is now offered again at no reserve in Georgia with build sheets, a Shelby invoice, service records, Lucas fog-light covers, a Deluxe Marti report, a removed steering wheel, and a clean Florida title.
The GT500KR was added to the Shelby American lineup mid-way through the 1968 model year and shared its styling with the GT500 but was fitted with a higher-powered 428ci Cobra Jet engine. This example was delivered new in Highland Green and features a ventilated fiberglass hood with a bifurcated scoop, side and quarter scoops, rocker-panel stripes, an integrated rear spoiler, and Shelby badging. The exterior was refinished in 1990, and the seller notes stone chips and scratches in the finish along with cracking paint around the hood scoop.
Cast-alloy 15″ 10-spoke wheels are mounted with 225/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. This car is equipped with power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, and Koni shocks have been installed.
The interior received Black Knitted Décor bucket seats from the factory, with matching door panels and carpeting. Woodgrain trim accents the dashboard, console, and door panels, and a Philco push-button AM radio is mounted in the center of the dash. A folding Sport Deck bench seat is located in the rear, and blemishes are noted on the right door panel.
A wood-rimmed steering wheel on a tilting column sits ahead of instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer with a trip odometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 64k miles, approximately 50 of which have been added under current ownership. The seller notes that the clock is inoperative.
The R-code 428ci Cobra Jet V8 was factory rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The engine bay is equipped with a curved Monte Carlo bar as well as an export brace and a non-original Holley carburetor. The oil-pan gasket was replaced to correct leaks in 2022, and the seller notes the most recent service involved changing the battery and oil.

Do you have any pictures of the VIN stamped on the back of the block or on the top ear of the transmission? Do you also have a picture of the stamping of the engine assembly date on the front passenger side of the block located just below the head? There should also be a square stamping with the letter E inside of it next to the date. Thank you

@1porsche_geek Very nice homage to this Shelby KR! It is a fantastic car anyone would love to own and drive (me included). That said, Carrroll Shelby's peak involvement was with the first-gen GT350 in 1965-66 (and '67). As time went on, Ford exerted more influence and Shelby less (more luxury, less race). In fact, production moved from Shelby's CA shop to A.O. Smith in Detroit in 1968. This, I believe, is why the original GT350 commands the highest prices today (GT500KR convertibles are a close second).
I have owned 428CJ Mustangs for over 40 years and love them, but sadly Shelby's influence was not what it had been by this time (due to Ford bean-counters). And, of course, he had nothing to do with the development of the 428CJ, which made a KR a KR.

I guess if it were me, and it came down to a choice between $15 or $20 K for the hubcaps, the carb., the smog and the exhaust, or a flawless running rebuilt original engine, I'm skipping all that other stuff for the flawless running rebuilt original engine. Probably never quite that simple though.

@HG52 All the production GT500KR's had the smog system on them. As for the carb's and exhaust, in the day a lot of people were chasing HP with better carb's and better flowing exhaust. But the trend has changed to the value of having the correct carburetor, distributor, stock style exhaust, correctly numbered transmissions and period correct 428 engines.
Sep 28, 2026 · 17:06
You would most likely only use the original type exhaust and other parts on a concours car or a car you want to be correct.

Sep 28, 2026 · 14:58
Was that smog set up nationwide, or only for cars headed for California? Trying to understand why anyone would want it. As for carburetors and exhaust, is there is something proprietary or special about them? If not, sounds like a lot of dough for something that you only see when the hood is open or the car is upside down.

While I spend most of my time dissecting factory paint codes from Stuttgart, a machine of this historical magnitude demands absolute respect. This isn’t just any classic fastback; chassis 8T02R203143 is a true-blue, mid-1968 GT500KR "King of the Road"—one of only 1,053 fastbacks produced during that legendary 4-month summer sprint.
What makes this specific example extraordinary is its direct lineage to the pure, unadulterated muscle car golden era. Delivered new to McCollum Motors, it wears the holy grail color combination: Highland Green over Black luxury vinyl. This is the exact shade pairing that defined automotive cool in 1968, but instead of just idling at local car shows, this KR has spent the last few decades breathing heavy on iconic tracks like Laguna Seca, Sonoma, and Thunderhill. A Shelby with real, track-driven track pedigree is a massive breath of fresh air.The heart of the beast is, of course, that mid-year addition 428ci Cobra Jet V8, underrated by the factory at 335 horsepower to appease insurance adjusters, but historically pushing much closer to 400 horsepower right out of the box. Mated to a proper 4-speed top-loader manual transmission and a heavy-duty 9" rear axle, it represents the absolute high-water mark of Carroll Shelby's relationship with Ford performance. Combine the dual-scoop fiberglass hood, original functional side scoops, Koni shocks, and that awesome period-correct Philco AM radio still sitting in the dash, and you have a museum-grade muscle car that begs to be pushed to its limits.
This is basically the F-4 Phantom of American Cars, best of luck to whoever wins this amazing car!

I recently purchased the correct rebuilt date correct carburetor for my KR and it was just under the $5000. Also recently purchased original refurbished smog set up for 2500. Along with factory correct stamped exhaust with all the bells and whistles for just over 5000. These cars are not cheap to build. That’s for sure that’s just cost of parts not to mention cost to install. Love your car good luck with the auction.

$385k is a great price for a convertible. Maybe even close to a record. 1 of 57 - 4spd air convertibles built.
Im not trying to degrade your car. In many ways it has things going for it that the car doesnt.
That car also has a $6k exhaust on it and the one on this car is considerably less.
I guess it all depends on what a buyer wants. But, since you asked the car in this auction is easily missing $20k in parts. You're not going to find a $2500 carb and you can throw smog, heat shield, s tube, starter delay, snorkel, wheels and other items to the list
I wish you the very best result. My point is all KRs are not created equal and I think the auctions are proving that

However it is an example that is not missing several thousand dollars of hard to find parts

Tomorrow’s Mecum Nashville auction (Lot S94) features a numbers‑matching 1968 Shelby GT500KR Fastback, 428 Cobra Jet V‑8, 4‑speed, factory A/C, Shelby No. 04407 — estimated at $250,000 – $350,000. That car shares the same drivetrain and authenticity profile as this KR. The market clearly recognizes the value of documented, original examples, and this one presents an equally compelling opportunity with its matching‑numbers powertrain, original body panels, interior, and major factory components. With no reserve, this KR represents a chance to own a genuine, investment‑grade Shelby at a fraction of current top‑tier estimates. Serious collectors should take note — originality like this is what drives the strongest results.

This GT500KR is one of the most authentic examples to come to market in years. Serious collectors know how hard it is to find a KR that still retains its original drivetrain, original body panels, original interior, original glass, original brightwork, and the majority of its factory installed components. Most KRs have been restored, repainted multiple times, modified, or had major components replaced. This one has not. The car’s Highland Green finish was refreshed decades ago, but the structure, trim, and interior remain true to 1968. The cabin still wears its factory décor seating, gauges, switchgear, and Sport Deck rear seat — exactly what collectors want to see in a real KR. The numbers matching 428 Cobra Jet and original 4 speed Toploader are still together, supported by correct Shelby hardware and suspension.
Documentation is excellent, including build sheets, Shelby invoice, service records, and a Deluxe Marti Report. Long term ownership history adds provenance that cannot be replicated. For bidders who follow KR values: originality is what drives the top of the market. Highly authentic, documented, numbers matching KRs continue to appreciate, and examples like this — preserved rather than over restored — are becoming extremely difficult to find.
With NO RESERVE, this is a rare opportunity to secure a true KR with pedigree and authenticity. Serious bidders should take note.

This GT500KR is the kind of car that rarely surfaces anymore — a numbers‑matching KR that hasn’t been over‑restored or modified into something it never was. The originality here is what serious collectors chase: factory body panels, original interior, original drivetrain, original glass and brightwork, and the correct KR‑specific components still in place. It’s extremely hard to find a KR that hasn’t been “improved” to death over the decades.
The Highland Green finish, refreshed in the 1990s, gives the car the honest, preserved look that many bidders prefer over a modern concours repaint. The cabin is exactly what you want to see in a real KR — original décor seating, original gauges, original switchgear, and the Sport Deck rear seat. Nothing fake, nothing recreated.
The numbers‑matching 428 Cobra Jet and original 4‑speed Toploader are the heart of the car, and they’re still here. The KR’s legendary performance heritage is intact, supported by correct suspension, Koni shocks, and proper Shelby hardware. Documentation is strong, including build sheets, Shelby invoice, service records, and a Deluxe Marti Report.
If you’ve been waiting for a KR that hasn’t been turned into a museum piece or a resto‑mod, this is the one. No reserve, documented, numbers‑matching, and highly authentic — exactly the combination that keeps these cars climbing in value. Serious bidders should take a close look.

This 1968 Shelby GT500KR is a largely original example of Ford’s performance offering for 1968. Finished in its factory specified color, the car received paintwork in the 1990s but retains its original body panels, interior, drivetrain, and the majority of its factory installed components. Power comes from the numbers matching 428 Cobra Jet V8 paired with its original transmission. The car remains highly authentic, with only a few items replaced or removed over the years. The carburetor and tires have been replaced, and the factory smog equipment, commonly removed on KR models, has been removed. All other major mechanical, cosmetic, and structural components remain original to the vehicle. The cabin retains its factory upholstery, trim, gauges, and switchgear, showing well for its age and reflecting careful long term stewardship. Exterior brightwork, glass, and badging are original, and the car continues to be presented as a well preserved, rather than fully restored, one.

Fords used Holleys on many cars. The present carburetor is from a 1968 - 390 motor with and automatic transmission, Mustang, Fairlane, Torino, etc
The correct carb is a C8OF-9510-AA Holley. They look very similar, however the Cobra Jet carbs are highly sought after

@coralsnake A few questions if I may. What are the correct carb markings for this car and what did the present carb come off of? Why is there an Autolite tag on this Holley?
Sep 22, 2026 · 09:15
Just a note for my friends, that carburetor is not correct for the car. An original, numbers matching one will set you back about five grand. I'm sure this one will get you there just as easily

@PorscheCDT yes, there's a tight metal mesh in them. A nightmare to clean out so I replace them and let the customer keep the old one if needed down the road.

@rdwautomotive Ok, so there must be some kind of filter in that chrome breather cap? BTW @seller, does the horn work with both steering wheels? Thanks

No we don’t have the smog parts! Back in the day these parts were taken off to make the car go faster. As far as I know the hose is correct.

@seller I take it you don't have the snorkel and the associated riser? Isn't the breather hose wrong on this one also, pulling air from the dirty side of the filter?

I gotta love a GT350. An incredibly beautiful machine with presence and power to complete the circle. Seeing it brings to mind that quote from Ford v Ferrari, "There's a point at 7,000 RPM... where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless. Just disappears. And all that's left is a body moving through space and time. 7,000 RPM. That's where you meet it. You feel it coming. It creeps up on you, close in your ear. Asks you a question. The only question that matters. Who are you?" Carrol Shelby never really said that, but it’s a great line, and it makes me wish that I could go to that place with this beast. But then reality sets in. Oh well. Maybe someday. Nonetheless this is a great car, people. Treat it as such.

@Snake289427 So the original Ford station wagon steering wheel has been reinstalled? Definitely not my choice, but to each his own. Please leave the replacement steering wheel in the trunk for the new owner. Wish it could be me, but this one will go beyond my budget.
