1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR Fastback 4-Speed

This 1968 Shelby Mustang GT500KR fastback is one of 1,053 examples produced during a production run from April through July 1968. The car was delivered new to McCollum Motors of Dishman, Washington, finished in Highland Green over black with GT equipment, and it is powered by a 428ci Cobra Jet V8 paired with a four-speed manual transmission and a 9″ rear axle with a limited-slip differential. Other features include a twin-scoop hood, side scoops, a rear spoiler, 15″ wheels, power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, Koni shocks, and a Philco push-button radio. The car was refinished in 1990, and throughout the early 1990s the previous owner of 31 years drove the car at Northern California road courses including Thunderhill Raceway, Sonoma Raceway, and Laguna Seca. The seller purchased it on BaT in July 2022, and it was previously offered on BaT in July 2026. This GT500KR is now offered again at no reserve in Georgia with build sheets, a Shelby invoice, service records, Lucas fog-light covers, a Deluxe Marti report, a removed steering wheel, and a clean Florida title.
The GT500KR was added to the Shelby American lineup mid-way through the 1968 model year and shared its styling with the GT500 but was fitted with a higher-powered 428ci Cobra Jet engine. This example was delivered new in Highland Green and features a ventilated fiberglass hood with a bifurcated scoop, side and quarter scoops, rocker-panel stripes, an integrated rear spoiler, and Shelby badging. The exterior was refinished in 1990, and the seller notes stone chips and scratches in the finish along with cracking paint around the hood scoop.
Cast-alloy 15″ 10-spoke wheels are mounted with 225/60 BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires. GT500 models utilized an upgraded suspension system with heavy-duty coil springs and an anti-roll bar up front in addition to heavy-duty leaf springs out back. This car is equipped with power-assisted steering and front disc brakes, and Koni shocks have been installed.
The interior received Black Knitted Décor bucket seats from the factory, with matching door panels and carpeting. Woodgrain trim accents the dashboard, console, and door panels, and a Philco push-button AM radio is mounted in the center of the dash. A folding Sport Deck bench seat is located in the rear, and blemishes are noted on the right door panel.
A wood-rimmed steering wheel on a tilting column sits ahead of instrumentation that includes a 140-mph speedometer with a trip odometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and auxiliary gauges. The five-digit odometer shows 64k miles, approximately 50 of which have been added under current ownership. The seller notes that the clock is inoperative.
The R-code 428ci Cobra Jet V8 was factory rated at 335 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The engine bay is equipped with a curved Monte Carlo bar as well as an export brace and a non-original Holley carburetor. The oil-pan gasket was replaced to correct leaks in 2022, and the seller notes the most recent service involved changing the battery and oil.

This 1968 Shelby GT500KR is a largely original example of Ford’s performance offering for 1968. Finished in its factory specified color, the car received paintwork in the 1990s but retains its original body panels, interior, drivetrain, and the majority of its factory installed components. Power comes from the numbers matching 428 Cobra Jet V8 paired with its original transmission. The car remains highly authentic, with only a few items replaced or removed over the years. The carburetor and tires have been replaced, and the factory smog equipment, commonly removed on KR models, has been removed. All other major mechanical, cosmetic, and structural components remain original to the vehicle. The cabin retains its factory upholstery, trim, gauges, and switchgear, showing well for its age and reflecting careful long term stewardship. Exterior brightwork, glass, and badging are original, and the car continues to be presented as a well preserved, rather than fully restored, one.

Fords used Holleys on many cars. The present carburetor is from a 1968 - 390 motor with and automatic transmission, Mustang, Fairlane, Torino, etc
The correct carb is a C8OF-9510-AA Holley. They look very similar, however the Cobra Jet carbs are highly sought after

@coralsnake A few questions if I may. What are the correct carb markings for this car and what did the present carb come off of? Why is there an Autolite tag on this Holley?

Just a note for my friends, that carburetor is not correct for the car. An original, numbers matching one will set you back about five grand. I'm sure this one will get you there just as easily

@PorscheCDT yes, there's a tight metal mesh in them. A nightmare to clean out so I replace them and let the customer keep the old one if needed down the road.

@seller I take it you don't have the snorkel and the associated riser? Isn't the breather hose wrong on this one also, pulling air from the dirty side of the filter?

I gotta love a GT350. An incredibly beautiful machine with presence and power to complete the circle. Seeing it brings to mind that quote from Ford v Ferrari, "There's a point at 7,000 RPM... where everything fades. The machine becomes weightless. Just disappears. And all that's left is a body moving through space and time. 7,000 RPM. That's where you meet it. You feel it coming. It creeps up on you, close in your ear. Asks you a question. The only question that matters. Who are you?" Carrol Shelby never really said that, but it’s a great line, and it makes me wish that I could go to that place with this beast. But then reality sets in. Oh well. Maybe someday. Nonetheless this is a great car, people. Treat it as such.
