Presentation

This 1959 Mercedes-Benz 300SL is one of 1,858 roadsters built during a six-year production run and is one of 211 examples manufactured in 1959. Chassis 9500067 was delivered new in the US and was subsequently used as a demonstrator by Berry Brothers Buick in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The car is said to have been gifted by Berry employee and future Keenan Motors founder Martin Keenan to a former Philadelphia Shriners Hospital for Children Chief of Staff and pediatric spinal cord injury surgical pioneer, out of appreciation for the surgeon’s role in the surgical treatment of Keenan’s father after a three-story fall. The car remained under the stewardship of the original owner and his family for 51 years, a span during which it spent time in Washington, Idaho, and Montana en route to earning 250k- and 500k-kilometer high-mileage badges from Mercedes-Benz of North America. In 2011, the car was purchased by its current owners and subsequently underwent a refurbishment by the Scott Grundfor Company in Arroyo Grande, California, that included a repaint in the original shade of silver, a re-trim of the interior in brown leather, and overhauls of the powertrain and other mechanical components. After completion of the project in 2013, the car participated in The Quail, A Motorsports Gathering, in Carmel, California, in 2013, 2014, and 2015. The car won awards at the 2014 San Luis Obispo Concours d’Elegance and Hillsborough Concours, while also completing the 2016 California Mille and 2024 Napa Reserve Rally. The car is powered by a 3.0-liter M198 inline-six that features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication. Additional features include a four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension with a low-pivot rear end, servo-assisted four-wheel drum brakes, chrome-finished 15” steel wheels, a dark brown soft top, and a Becker Mexico radio. This W198 roadster is now offered by the seller on behalf of its owners with documentation spanning over 60 years, photos and invoices totaling over $500k from the 2011-2013 refurbishment, a transcribed interview with the long-time original owner, a 500k-kilometer high-mileage badge, a removed cylinder head and steering wheel, a matching fitted luggage set, manuals, show awards, and a California title in the owners’ names.

The roadster variant of the 300SL entered production two months after its debut at the March 1957 Geneva Motor Show, superseding the coupe model as the final Gullwings left the factory. Construction incorporated a reconfigured version of the coupe’s tubular space frame with the sill trusses lowered to accommodate conventional doors and the rear segment revised to create usable trunk space. Like its predecessor, the roadster featured steel bodywork with aluminum utilized for the hood, trunk lid, door skins, sills, floors, and bulkhead.

This example is said to have been refurbished more than once under original ownership before undergoing a refurbishment by Scott Grundfor between 2011 and 2013. During the Grundfor project, the body was removed from the frame and stripped to bare metal before welding repairs were carried out in various areas followed by a repaint in the car’s original shade of silver (DB180). The frame was also repaired and refinished. Features include US-market headlights, bumper guards at front and rear, a driver-side mirror, pivot-out door handles, rear reflectors, a dark brown soft top, and fender louvers framed by grooved accent lines that extend onto the quarter panel doglegs.

Chrome-finished steel wheels wear matching hubcaps with body-color centers and are wrapped in Pirelli Cinturato 165VR15 tires, as is a matching spare housed in the trunk. Servo-assisted braking is handled by finned aluminum drums at each corner, with duplex actuation up front.

Originally outfitted in red leather, the cabin was re-trimmed in brown leather over the bucket seats, door panels, dashboard, sills, center tunnel, and aluminum top cover during the Scott Grundfor refurbishment. Additional features include brown square-weave carpeting, lap belts, roll-up windows, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a dash-mounted ashtray and cigar lighter, a lockable glovebox, and a Becker Mexico radio.

The ivory-color steering wheel was replaced during the refurbishment and sits ahead of VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and a rectangular combination gauge with English lettering. The five-digit odometer shows 11k miles and is said to have turned over three times. Approximately 5k miles have been added under current ownership.

It’s so fabulous that this car was so well loved, and driven like it was a Mercedes Diesel… Lots of miles, and I’m sure millions of smiles from both driver, passenger, and people that saw her driving down the road. It’s what these cars were made to do - drive and drive and drive.😉
You don’t realize how durable these cars really were until stories like this. It’s a fabulous car, and I hope the new owner puts another hundred thousand miles on her - knowing that it really doesn’t mean anything anymore related to this specific car.👌

Obviously, this is a stunning car, but what really stands out here is the seller’s transparency. The full documentation, the honest accounting of what was found, what was done, and who did it — that’s rare. The collector car world is full of cars with stories that conveniently start the day before the auction. This one comes with receipts, which matters enormously for a car of this significance. Hats off for doing it the right way and being willing to show all the work. This is how a 300SL deserves to be treated.

I was fortunate to drive a 1957 recently. At 6'5" I assumed this would be a “look but don’t fit” situation. Turns out… I fit. Barely. And now I may have a problem. the chassis feels planted, and the car practically begs to be driven faster. Only reminder you’re piloting a museum-grade machine? Brake early.

Great combo on a legend! Having driven 300 SLs in the past, the drive experience is hard to describe. Stunning in presence, it's a little more motorsports dedicated than you may expect. Motor starts like a lumpy race motor, warms up to a mean idle and makes decent power. It's a car you can own and drive. Happy for the new owner - GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY ELSE!

I owned a series of 300SL Roadsters from 1987-2018! 1 for 2 years, a 2nd for 10 years, and a 3rd for 21 years. My personal favorite vintage sports car of all times!!! Drove 35K-40K miles total among the 3. Beautiful, reliable, and fabulous to drive. I won many national concours awards. The next owner should love this one!!!

If I ever wanted to spend an insane amount of money on a car, this would be it! Prettier than the Gullwing, IMHO, and perfect colors on this one. But I like to drive mine, and I'd be afraid to risk this one in traffic.

I hear ya brother, not only could you get one of these for 5K back then for the same money you could get a 427 Shelby Cobra and I even saw a REAL GT40 for that price. Unfortunately like you I was making $1.36 an hour at Bob's Big Boy so those cars might just as well have been 5 million dollars! I know the Gullwings are more valuable but IMO the lines on the convertibles are just so much more elegant and flowing.

I could have bought one in 1972 for $5,000.00. But, as a 17 year old making money from mowing lawns, that was not gonna happen, damn it! As I understand it, these are better than the gullwings, 5 speed ( I am told that the roadsters had a five speed,) disc brakes and a better diff ratio. And a lot easier to get in and out of I would imagine.

These 300SLs are surprisingly light on their feet and have no problem traveling at freeway speeds compared to other 50s era cars. Disc brakes recommended!

Hint to those who may not know. Whenever ownership of a car is referred to as "stewardship", you can't afford it. I mean, seriously, you don't see on Carfax, The Hyundai Elantra remained under the stewardship... Anyway, what a spectacular specimen. These cars only get more stunning as time goes on. GLWTA.

What a beautiful classic car. I really like the color. I'm surprised at the HP only 240 HP although a lot in 1959. I thought they had 300 HP. Your not buying this car for it's speed although it's still very good. What a rare car, it should go for many $$$$$. Good luck I wish I had more room in my garage so I could buy it.

My dad owned 9500077! Having the opportunity to have driven this car many times when I was a teenager is definitely the automotive highlight of my life. IMO the most beautiful car ever made. Only gets better with age.
