1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Alloy-Block Roadster
Presentation
This 1962 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Roadster is one of 210 examples manufactured with an alloy engine block and four-wheel disc brakes during the final months of the model’s production. Chassis 003139 spent time with two New York owners before moving to Maryland in 1989 and remained with a collector in New Jersey from 1998 until the selling dealer’s acquisition in 2026. Refinished in silver with a matching hardtop, the car is powered by a replacement 3.0-liter M198 inline-six that features Bosch mechanical fuel injection and dry-sump lubrication. Additional features include a four-speed manual transmission, four-wheel independent suspension with a low-pivot rear axle, a black convertible top, black leather upholstery, and a Becker Mexico radio. This alloy-block W198 roadster is now offered in North Salem, New York, with copies of its data card and a clean New Jersey title.
The roadster variant of the 300SL entered production two months after its debut at the March 1957 Geneva Motor Show, superseding the coupe model as the final Gullwings left the factory. Construction incorporated a reconfigured version of the coupe’s tubular space frame with the sill trusses lowered to accommodate conventional doors and the rear segment revised to create usable trunk space. Like its predecessor, the roadster featured steel bodywork with aluminum utilized for the hood, trunk lid, door skins, sills, floors, and bulkhead.
This example was originally finished in Fire Engine Red with a black removable hardtop and underwent a color change to silver with a matching hardtop under previous ownership. Features include US-market headlights, front and rear bumper guards, a fender-mounted driver-side mirror, pivot-out door handles, narrow-profile rear rocker panel end flanges, large-nut windshield-wiper arms, rear reflectors, and a black convertible top. Chrome-finished wheels wear polished hubcaps with body-color centers and are wrapped in 6.70-15 Michelin X tires, as is a matching spare housed in the trunk. Four-wheel servo-assisted Dunlop disc brakes were introduced in 1961 beginning with chassis 002780. A brake fluid flush was performed in preparation for the sale.
The cabin is trimmed in black leather over the bucket seats, door panels, dashboard, center tunnel, sills, and aluminum top cover. Additional features include charcoal square-weave carpeting, an ivory-color shift knob, roll-up windows, lap belts, a clock, a dash-mounted rearview mirror, a lockable glovebox, a dash-mounted ashtray, and a Becker Mexico radio.
The ivory-color steering wheel sits ahead of VDO instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, a 7k-rpm tachometer, and a rectangular combination gauge with English lettering. The five-digit odometer shows 55k miles.

I also have a bespoke Bechtel Roadster and it’s divine. It’s a ‘62, disc brake, matching numbers, fully documented car with a cast iron block, only 43,000 original miles with hard top. It’s also a stunning rare cement grey that they only made five of in total and only for ROs. It also came with a limited warranty. In my opinion it’s the best of all worlds as far as ROs go. Tim Bechtel is also the most honest and accommodating seller of classical cars I have ever met in my 35 years of buying and selling over $20 million of cars. His team is second to none.

I am very happy that my former 300SL has found a new owner. I hope that he will join the Gull Wing Group and bring it to our annual convention during the 1st week of August , 2026. I had way too much fun with it spread over 10 years, 40K miles, and many different states!!!

i can say this about that model mercedes car, i had a friend, in san francisco in the 1959/1960 time period, when i was about 21/22 who let me drive his car.. there is a lever you can pull out which will dump gas into the engine when you want to really GO.. i took the car from his garage on 17th & valencia out to lake merced and i pulled that button and took that car to over 100mph past the lake and the olympic club.. traffic in those days was, well, less restrictive.. you don't get IN this car you sort of put it on like a well worn leather jacket.. you wear the car and become a part of the car this model is THAT good.. yes, the top was down.. when, in 1970 i ordered a new mercedes SL i thought i would get one like this.. obviously i did not..

Uncle Fred, the current engine number was embossed by the owner after Spellman, AND in a different font. The engine number should be the factory engine replacement number.

FYI, the swapped engine isn’t a detriment here..it was done by the factory and re-stamped by them with the original numbers…if anything, it just adds to the value. 😉

Quick aside…lots of talk about The Bridge circuit becoming a golf course…well the last track I got to do a two seater Indycar ride with Mario Andretti on was California Speedway in Fontana. Great track, great location. So good a location, its an Amazon warehouse now😭. Gotta try and save racetracks when possible…🙏

If you haven’t read it, I recommend you go back to the beginning of the comments, and read those from former owner @last_roadster. As I said in my comment at the time, it’s the most thorough documentation of provenance of one of these SL’s I’ve seen in a long time. And all the people involved over the years were top people, people that really knew these cars, and how to treat it properly.😊
And with @1600veloce being the seller, that just adds to confidence that the car is still as it should be. And throw on top of that that the amazing folks at @ScottGroundforcompany are bidders at this point, well if you know anything about them, they are the best at what they do when it comes to classic Mercedes, and especially SL’s . They are a premier restoration firm, so for them to think this highly of this car at this point, well, you know they’re not gonna sell it for anything less…🙂
So, this is gonna get very very interesting at the end. High-end dealers, combined with what will maybe be a passionate individual or two who wants to become its new caretaker, we got a ways to go folks.👌

About the time this was made, I wanted to get a Talbot mirror, like on this roadster, for my grandfather's E-Type. At the Mercedes dealer, it was at least $100, maybe more. Got one from MG Mitten for $9.95. I recently found the box in which it came and sold it for $9.95 on Ebay.

Someday, maybe...Meanwhile I have a 1967 300SEb with the M189 motor and a 4 speed auto. Mine has the dual point distributor but only one coil, also the six plunger fuel injection pump. That is a truly marvelous engine. Omaha to Kansas City in 97 minutes.

I’m certain the lighter engine block helped with slow speed steering. I just witnessed one of these drive into a car and coffee and the wife got out of the car and let her husband park it in the space because she was having trouble steering the car.

I owned a 300SL RO for 31 years including this one for 10 years. What a wonderful experience! I loved the gear shift video while remembering that I also had a shortened gear shift lever for it which was even more delightful! The engine in this one was amazing while I owned it! It looks prettier, however, when these were inexpensive they were so much fun !!! What a car!

My God!.. The advanced and complicated structure and engineering, of all the items that makes this cars mechanical and electrical structure is so far beyond what a car of high value would be just several years later ( as engineering and( simplification came about) is astounding! It IS the precursor of what will come later..As a restorer of later cars..I would run away from this..so whoever took it on, what a feat of endurance and love and ALOT of patience!..What a work of art! And worth every dollar!

If you could beam yourself back to 1962 and test drive all the great open European sports cars of the day, I think it would be difficult to not conclude that the 300 SL roadster is at the top of the class. A walk into the Ferrari showroom to drive a 250 series II PF Cabriolet, and then on to Maserati to take a 3500 Vignale Spider out for a spin, and then follow that up with a sprint in a 356 B roadster at the Porsche dealership. I think after all that is said and done, you would be hard pressed not to declare the 300 SL disc brake roadster the clear winner. The build quality and race bred heritage of the 300 SL surpasses all of them IMHO. Certainly the other cars mentioned all have their merits and distinct characteristics but I have to say that the disc brake roadster beats them all. The car offered here appears to be an outstanding example. Good luck to it’s next fortunate owner.

I discarded old service records from my ownership in 2025 during a renovation of our basement. Extensive restoration after my ownership included bare metal repaint, bodywork, chrome work, new interior and engine bay detailing. It appears to have been driven very little since I added 40K miles in my younger days.

Paperwork trail remains the primary question. Typically on a collector car of this stature one sees pics of the paperwork trail of the work done on the car. Not necessarily all 60 years but certainly once it went into a private collection. I see the comments-but value is also built by records and certainly Bob Platz would have provided that. The vehicle was repainted and new interior by the last owner (Ray Cantina) and by one of the best...as a potential future owner and serious bidder I am just asking the seller if they have any of these records. If none are available, happy to leave the question alone and bid accordingly. Thank you.

All Mercedes-Benz 300 cars from the ‘50s - ‘60s had aluminum heads. Now clearly there was cast iron diesel heads and also a few years of 220 Mercedes in the early ‘50s with a cast iron head.

As I always pontificate, these are steel, rubber, and glass that suck down dinosaur remains, but nothing matches the wonderful feelings and outright love that you develop for one of these cars. Doesn’t have to be this level of car - it could be a 73 Pinto - it just depends on your experiences and memories. And memories are all that really matter, isn’t that right?☺️
So, details have been fleshed out, and yes, this is an extremely rare version of the SL, considering that the engine was switched out by Mercedes-Benz - and the original serial number was placed on it - that happens, but not very often. It keeps the authenticity strong, and though there was a color change to silver, I disagree with some of the thoughts that that’s going to make this car worth less. I don’t think it will at all, and it’s going to be a strong seller here at the end.👍
So, will be watching this for sure, as I’m sure @last_ roadster will as well, and I’m sure there’s gonna be a tear or two shed when it does change hands at that point.😢

Bidders please take comfort in that this is a great car which gave my family great memories for a decade while our children were young. I met my 1st 300SL owners in 1960 at an event across the street from my childhood home. I never saw them again until I took this roadster to my 1st annual Gull Wing Group convention in 1989 in Dearborn, Michigan. That couple , John and Rose Burnside, were there with the same roadster to congratulate on this one. I met my 2nd 300SL owner in 1975 while a Med student at UC San Francisco. my professor encouraged me to buy one in the future. I took 12 years to get my 1st one in 1987. I added this one to my garage in 1988! In'89 I sold my 1st one for a sum which paid for both with a substantial profit in addition. This one stayed !! It drove me to shows and rallies. It drove my wife and I to great restaurants. The "vintage" car seat took our children to games, practices and play dates. The trunk was filled with groceries when not carrying its factory luggage. The only mechanical problem it ever developed was a broken drive shaft while pulling out of a parking spot. A new old stock drive shaft replaced the original one. While driving and loving this one, I developed the urge to find a low milage all original one, with which I could win a preservation class award at Pebble Beach. In 1993 my wife and I took it to the Gull Wing group convention in the Northern California wine country, where I got to drive it across the Golden Gate Bridge for the 1st time. In 1997 I found a very low milage all original '63 example. In '98 I sold this one for more than I had paid for the '63. Big mistake!!! I should have kept both!! We all make mistakes! I hope this one finds great home!!

@lwrock3422 we just performed an oil service, brake fluid flush for the sale. It was kept in climate control and used for shows. The underside details and overall condition are fantastic on the 300SL. We do not have tools or luggage for this one. Thanks

Of course also is the engine is 65 years & 55k miles old in a high performance sports car! Like the car & seriously a buyer at a price! Color very trad but equally undistinquished and with changed engine not surprised if the car is not snapped up as expected!

Such a wonderful example. I believe the later Roadsters are the best, although I'm biased because I owned a 1962 Roadsters as a daily driver in the early 1970's. GLWTA. I hope the next owner drives his like I drove mine. (chassis #3108. I guess they were very close coming off the line.)

@Fpsocean: No Frank, It retains the engine installed by factory in 1/63. The # was changed from 219 to the original 108 during engine detailing after I had sold it.

I always go to the driving video first fo a 1600veloce auction to hear the external and internal miked videos. I can watch these multiple times, then dive into the weeds of the descriptions and photography. You guys have the right set up for your auctions! It is a particular pleasure to make comments about this particular alloy engine . disc brake 300SL Roadster. 210 of the total of 1958 300SL Roadsters manufactured between '57-'63 had the lower weight alloy block engines. These were produced from 3/62 through 2/8/63. The factory built an initial run of 229 numbered alloy block engines, all in 1962, 19 of which were "spares" I owned a number of this variety of 300SL RO's including this one from '89-'98. As I recall it was completed in the early summer of 1962. Its 1st owner was Frederick Bedford III on New England from '62-'63. In 1/63 it sustained an engine failure. At that time , the alloy block engines were deemed unrepairable. Engine was replaced under factory warranty with engine block # 219. After all of the original 19 spares were used, the factory supplied replacement unstamped blocks which were restamped with the original engine #. upon installation. This replacement was not known to the 2nd and 3rd owners. The 2nd owner was Walter Stacker, from '63-'68, who died in the last year or so. 3rd owner was Jerry Stacker from '68-'89. Jerry was an aircraft engineer and an unbelievable mechanic. He could take a car including the engine and other mechanicals apart and put all back together perfectly! He restored it himself and had it repainted in dark green. He would do out of car engine servicing on his Ferrari Testarossa, and he built from scratch a complete 300SL GW replica which has won awards at Gull Wing Group Conventions. This RO was the best driving 300SL I have ever owned. I bought it from Jerry Lester and had no significant issues for a decade. I drove it perhaps 40K miles during my ownership. I spoke to Jerry Lester today and he has submitted an article to the Gull Wing Group about his restoration of this very car. The article will probably not be published until after this auction has closed. I sold it to Ray Catina in 1998. He had it stripped to bare metal by 300SL restorer Bob Platz and repainted DB 180 silver. A new interior was put in containing the correct black Roser leather. I have seen it and it looked spectacular at several concours events. It was owned by Ray Catina until earlier this year. At some time after my ownership the engine # was changed back to 108, as the factory did with blank replacement blocks. I retains an engine from the original production run. The one was my "2nd to Last Roadster"!!

At 15, a friend and I rode our bikes from the Jersey Shore to somewhere near Summit NJ to visit Peter Helek’s house hoping to see his Old 16 Locomobile race car. But when we walked into his dimly lit barn, it was his 300SL convertible that immediately imprinted on my brain. It will forever be the one. As beautiful as Grace Kelly and as unobtainable. It’s always interesting to see one of these late-production alloy-block Roadsters come to market. The original aluminum engine block, four-wheel disc brakes, matching-numbers drivetrain, factory hardtop, and data card all make this a very special example. It really appears to check all the boxes. Whoever ends up buying it should definitely consider joining the Gull Wing Group and participating in the annual 300SL Classic. I own a few 300SLs, and they’re some of my favorite cars to drive. They’re not only among the most iconic automobiles ever built, but they’re also remarkably well engineered and reliable when properly maintained. I’ve completed the 300SL Classic, roughly 1,000 miles, in three different 300SLs, and each experience has been unforgettable. If you’ve never done it, it’s absolutely worth it. Congratulations in advance to the future owner of what looks to be a fantastic example.

Stunning, rare, elite, first super car. Just beware of cast iron heads on an aluminium block. Dissimilar metals can be a big issue. There is a reason Mercedes made a good number of replacement aluminium engine blocks. Good luck with the auction.
