Ferrari 250 GTO Re-Creation
Presentation
This Ferrari 250 GTO re-creation was constructed beginning in 2008 by engineer and marque specialist Steven Giacobbi using the shortened chassis of a 1962 Ferrari 250 GTE wrapped in aluminum coachwork formed over a body buck that was reportedly shaped with input from an original 250 GTO. The donor car’s 3.0-liter Colombo V12 is said to have been overhauled during the build with higher-compression pistons, larger exhaust valves, and dry-sump lubrication, while Tremec five-speed internals were fitted inside a Ferrari 250 gearbox case. After its completion, the car was displayed at various events before being consigned via the selling dealer to a New Zealand owner in 2016 and later repurchased in 2020 by its constructor, who commissioned a mechanical refresh by Patrick Ottis in Berkeley, California. Finished in red, the car features six Weber carburetors, four-wheel disc brakes, coil-sprung independent front suspension, 15” Borrani wire wheels, and fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in blue cloth upholstery. This 250 GTO re-creation is now offered on dealer consignment in Emeryville, California, with photos from its construction, invoices from the 2020 refresh, and a clean Montana title identifying it as a 1962 Ferrari GTE.
Development of the 250 GTO was set in motion in 1961 as Ferrari’s competition department sought to address the aerodynamic shortcomings of the 250 GT SWB Berlinetta for the approaching 1962 FIA International Championship for GT manufacturers. Initial design of the model began as the Comp/62 project under the lead of Giotto Bizzarrini, whose 1961 firing left the remainder of styling and eventual construction to Scaglietti. Each with distinct bodywork details, 36 examples of the original 250 GTO, or Gran Turismo Omologato, were built between 1962 and 1964 to lead Ferrari to three consecutive International Championship for GT Manufacturers titles.
Wrapped over a shortened 250 GTE chassis and custom tubular framing, this re-creation’s aluminum bodywork was hand-formed over a buck that was reportedly designed based on an original 250 GTO that had passed through the constructor and current owner’s shop for repairs. The body is finished in red with Scuderia shields on each fender.
Features include faired-in Marchal headlights, rectangular fog lamps, three D-shaped nose inlets with body-color covers held in place by Dzus fasteners, triple angled fender vents, cowl air inlets under transparent scoops, vents on the sail panels and behind each rear wheel, a rear spoiler, dual side mirrors, a Monza-style fuel-filler cap, and quad SNAP exhaust outlets.
Borriani wire wheels are secured by three-eared knock-offs and were mounted with Michelin XWX tires measuring 215/70VR15 up front and 225/70VR15 at the rear during the 2020 refresh by Patrick Ottis. A matching spare wrapped in Dunlop rubber is housed in the trunk. Stopping is handled by four-wheel hydraulic disc brakes. The brake fluid was flushed during the 2020 service, which also included a rebuild of the steering box with replacement worm and peg gears.
The cockpit houses a pair of fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in blue cloth amid gray-painted interior surfaces. Equipment includes a roll bar, black diamond-plate rubber floor mats, a gated shifter with a bright knob, drilled pedals, sliding window panels, shoulder belts, green-tinted sun visors, and a hand-held fire extinguisher.

I don't understand the point of all of the comments calling out the differences between this and an original 250 GTO. The seller has patiently explained that the differences are for drivability and reliability etc. They aren't mistakes. They are deliberate.
It's an excellent re-creation and I'll leave it at that. I hope the seller gets what they are looking for today! 👍

@LapsPG Re: Exhaust/ Fuel tank - It appears that the fuel tank is simply oversized vertically. That may be a result of the 250 GTE chassis rails vs the architecture for the original GTOs. One may suspect that this car has the standard fuel tank capacity vs. other re-creations that may have reduced the fuel tank size to fit within the GTE chassis.
That said - this certainly looks to be one of the best proportioned GTO re-creations - especially from the side view...and it's nice to see those period correct blue fabric seats. Now we know where some of the Ferrari Icona series color combos come from!!

One last summary on this exceptional Ferrari and the history of these rare originals.
This Ferrari GTO re-creation is one of the best examples of the re-creation genre. The combined artistry and engineering, Ferrari components, and attention to correct details are evident throughout. The build is based on an original Ferrari 250 GTE which retains the matching number engine and chassis.
Though originally built for the rigors of racing, nearly all original examples have shifted their purpose and presence to museum displays or invited viewings at premier concours events.
Original examples rarely come to market and when they do, record prices achieve stratospheric levels. The rarity and precious nature of original examples has offered an attractive proposition for modern craftsmen and Ferrari enthusiasts – to re-create the original GTO utilizing period-correct Ferrari mechanicals, accurate components, and faithfully matched body lines.
This rare and desirable GTO re-creation offers an enthusiast the opportunity to experience the pinnacle of the Enzo-era Ferrari derived from the same passion, pride, and engineering excellence found in the originals.
Good luck to all bidders.

Coming into the final half hour of this GTO auction, a reminder that our mutual passion for sports cars is not limited to the era of construction. While we honor the originals for good reason, there is a great deal to be said for re-created examples of iconic vehicles that can stir the soul in a similar way.
This 250 GTO retains the matching engine and chassis of the original donor car and has been faithfully prepared and serviced so that any enthusiast can enjoy the spirit of the original without the worry of preserving a museum artifact.

@LapsPG we are not aware specifically of the reasons for the exhaust configuration at the rear of the car but we suspect that it has to do with the construction of the road exhaust and difference in the lower platform architecture derived from the GTE donor chassis.
@majors here are some photos of the front plates removed to show the openings at the leading edge of the hood. Also a photo showing the car in comparison to a few other Ferraris currently in our showroom.

I'm wondering if anyone out there remembers back in the middle 90's a gentleman that raced one these 250 GTO reproductions here on the west coast with us in Sovern, he lived in Portland.
I was invited to spend the weekend at his house while racing my Alfa GTV, on Friday he asked if I wanted to go to his job, I asked what do you do?? He said "I run Heavy Equipment" ;) He flew 747's LOLOL.

What a car! What a driving video with the fog! I can't imagine driving that road and coming in the opposite direction and having you come past me. I would have lost my mind! Like a mirage. Incredible. This is car is worth whatever it goes for, which is to say I don't think it's even close to a real sold price yet IMHO. Good luck to the seller and bidders. What a machine. Wish I could have seen a moment in 4th gear at higher speeds. It does seem to be geared low or high depending on how you look at it.

Not to be the devil's advocate here, but I have to admit to be very underwhelmed at the engine sound on the lovely drive video! Not sure why, but that gorgeous V12 just sounds very industrial to me! My R8 V10 would sound much better, I think. Regardless, this is a totally unbelievable piece of work and the best evocation of the iconic GTO that I can imagine. Total kudos to the engineer/builder! Would be the best show-up ride at your local C&C that you could imagine! Bet this goes WAY higher than current bid if it's going to sell, and rightfully so!

I've seen a few 250 GTO's in the flesh and in photos over the past decades. Unless I missed a prior comment, the rear exhaust system looks unusual to me and not like any 250 GTO I've had the pleasure of viewing. Is there a reason why it is as exposed looking as it is? Not being critical here. Just a mention on something I noted on first viewing this car.

@desetto as @keyfobs notes, consistent with our understanding, is that as long as someone has created a singular work of art and does not generate multiple artifacts of the original design with branding and promotion that goes against the rightful use of their trademark, name and copyrights, it is considered a singular effort and allowable. Much like a few enthusiastic people who replaced their Fiat X1/9 badges with Ferrari emblems back in the 1980s. As long as it is one car with no promotion.
@3Pedalonly and therein lies one of the most compelling aspects of this Re-Creation - not just the variance in the amount one might pay, rather it's the freedom to engage in the experience of driving, hearing, sharing, and moving just a bit closer to the edge of your seat, without worrying that you might damage an otherwise priceless artifact of history.
This GTO offers the 250 Ferrari connection with a matching number chassis/engine that features the legendary configuration so many of us grew up with as the pinnacle of Ferrari performance.
As @HAPPY also notes, many enthusiasts are purchasing or building their own versions of historically important cars so they can enjoy their cars more actively and regularly - some even as replacements for the real thing, which also safely resides in their collection.

As @HAPPY also notes, many enthusiasts are purchasing or building their own versions of historically important cars so they can enjoy the car more regularly - some even as replacements for the real thing, which safely resides in their collection.

Wow... Beautiful. I had no idea the replicas were getting this high. I have a completed replica that I would argue is as pretty as this one but with AC/Heat and 6 speed for cruising comfort. I'd be willing to sell for significantly less. Message me for photos and info if interested.

@desetto Ferrari typically tolerates these listings as long as the seller is a private individual giving full disclosure, but they have stepped in previously if they feel a commercial coachbuilder is stepping on their historic toes. plus, they are using a genuine ferrari chassis and powertrain, and existing badging.

I would bet fit and finish is better than orig. With prices being what they are I would wager you're going to see more of this type of high end replicas. Today's new technology makes replicating parts very fast, easy and at a low cost. Everything from engine cases to bodies are done in the Street Rod world. Even metal shaping and production is now done by computer and machine. Basically if you can scan it it can be replicated.

@3pedalstable After this car was completed, the owner and builder, were told by a former original GTO owner that he was unable to tell the difference between this car and the original.
You would have to be well versed in Ferrari construction to determine what was different about this car when compared to the original. The best part about the driving experience is after just a few minutes, as you gain your composure from the delight of driving it, you start to engage the higher rev range and the entire experience completely erases the gap in time from this to the original - You simply let the drive take you.

@stiffarm an admirable club to have been a member of. Which reminds us all that for most of the life of these cars, they were in the hands of people who drove them with some level of abandon that is near impossible to do today. Which is why a highly refined re-creation done in the spirit of the original becomes such a captivating opportunity for those who wish to experience the authentic sensations derived from the original.

Five speed is correct, not four. I should know, as I briefly owned Series I #4757 GT in the late 80's with Jacques Swaters the Belgian importer and Francorchamps team owner.

Regarding the side window perimeter trim that was mentioned earlier, these are removable pieces which are in place to reduce wind noise and divert rain water intrusion at speed along the perimeter of the side window openings.
For those who follow accuracy in construction, this example has the pedigree to not only boast hand aluminum formed coachwork directly patterned from an original GTO which was on hand when this car was constructed, this example is based on a matching Ferrari 250 chassis and engine - something that not all re-creations can rightfully boast.
The Ferrari 250 heritage and family genetics utilized in this matching numbers example will be greatly favored when applying for future vintage road events and tours.

Thank you @275GTB we confused the 250 SWB, which were 4 speeds. The effort made to convert the original casing for the gearbox with the newer 5 speed gears was quite the effort both in imagination and engineering.
Oct 5, 2026 · 17:46
The original 1962-1964 GTOs were 5-speeds. Standard 250s (SWB, Cal Spyder, etc) had 4-speeds. Great idea incorporating a Tremec into a Ferrari 4-speed box for the correct number of gears. GLWA

@stiffarm Thank you, and while you are correct that all original GTOs were 4 speeds, the decision to make this a 5 speed was not overlooking originality. It was intentionally selected and carefully engineered using the original four speed case.
Preferences towards driving as part of the total package re-creating this GTO were chosen to enhance the driver/ownership experience. The 5 speed, while not original, makes for more enjoyable touring and overall use as a road car.

GTO engineering who is the GOAT of these recreations offered a 5 speed config which for road driving is a better option IMO....
Oct 5, 2026 · 13:11
Also, the GTOs were four speed. This five speed configuration with a reverse lockout is incorrect. One look at the gate is all it takes. Still a very nice and well done recreation.
Oct 5, 2026 · 13:07
Very well done.--definitely not an indistinguishable copy. Greg Jones of Stuart FL constructed two GTO recreations for me in 1989 -1991, one a 3 liter and one a 4 liter. The most obvious flaw on this car is that the gearshift lever does not have the slight rearward bend of the original.

@Gearhed64 the area around the side windows is trimmed with a secondary lip which likely reduces rain water from seeping into the cabin at speed. We'll have a closer look at this tomorrow but it appears these can be removed, though we believe they very likely also reduce wind noise. In the case of this car, it's clear that deviations from the original are welcomed improvements to the driving experience and have been quite thoughtfully done.
And speaking of the special mechanical features and thoughtful improvements on this GTO, a custom mounted aluminum radiator was installed with isolation mounts not attached to the frame. The original frame attached design heavily vibrated the radiator - this improved design is not subject to the original vibration issue. The nine-quart oil sump was cleverly constructed as an alloy case shrouding a modern composite case pump canister, retaining the original vintage appearance. Additionally, the front mounted oil cooler was lined to the sump and the sail panel filler location on the outside of the car was fitted with an oil dipstick.
For the interior, all details were constructed with authenticity in mind with a few concessions including modern seat belts, a fully integrated roll bar, and improved instrumentation. After this car was completed, Steve Giacobbi, the builder, was told by a former original GTO owner that he was unable to tell the difference between this car and the original.
When this GTO was completed, Giacobbi enjoyed driving and displaying the car at various events. In 2016, the Giacobbi consigned this GTO to Fantasy Junction and subsequently was sold to a collector in New Zealand. In 2020, the car returned to the states under Fantasy Junction consignment which resulted in Giacobbi purchasing the car. As such, Giacobbi has the unique distinction of being the builder and the first and third owner.
We've also added images of the March 2012 Classic Driver, New Zealand, article which features a photo of Chris Amon driving this GTO at Hampton Downs.

@mike_747 asked "@Fleche_dOr. So the hill climb video is of a different recreation correct?"
Not a re-creation. Both videos are of a very much real 250 GTO; chassis 5571 GT. Like the rest, it has a storied provenance.
Built in February 1964 with the LM style body, colloquially referred to as '64 or Series II. Three cars were built in this style in 1964 and I think another four converted later. Although it appears somewhat similar to the 250 LM, it does not share the mid-engine layout.
Below is an incomplete history:
Originally shipped to Chinetti.
Won in its first race at Daytona driven by Rodriguez/Hill in 1964 (thus the link to Derek Hill, Phil's son, seen driving in the two videos).
DNF at the 1964 Le Mans.
Chris Cord.
Steve Earle.
Both dailied it. Hey, it was the 60s, what else to do with a discarded race car?
Bernie Ecclestone.
McCaw family.

@Z07Vette agreed. The build team did a superb job crafting this GTO.
Here is some additional history and build details for the cadre of enthusiasts and bidders:
Although the GTO was originally built for the rigors of racing and driven with competitive intensity, nearly all the surviving original examples have shifted both their purpose and presence to museum displays or invited viewings at premier concours events.
Original examples rarely come to market and when they do, record prices achieve stratospheric levels. The rarity and precious nature of original examples has offered an attractive proposition for modern craftsmen and Ferrari enthusiasts – the challenge to re-create the original GTO utilizing period-correct Ferrari mechanicals, accurate components, and faithfully matched body lines.
A properly built and accurately re-created GTO offers an enthusiast the opportunity to experience the pinnacle of the Enzo-era Ferrari derived from the same passion, pride, engineering excellence found in the originals.
This Ferrari GTO re-creation is one of the best examples of the post 1960s build era. The combined artistry and engineering, Ferrari components, and attention to correct details are just a few aspects of this comprehensive build. Based on a Ferrari 250 GTE, the "family genetics" made it an ideal confluence for the engine, chassis, suspension, brakes, and mechanical systems to derive the most accurate GTO possible.
The build began in 2008 in the hands of highly experienced craftsman and Ferrari expert, Steven Giacobbi. A personal and singular project for his own enjoyment, Giacobbi was able to engage his Ferrari expertise and artisanal craftsmanship for both the mechanical systems and the alloy body construction. As fate would have it, a factory built GTO had arrived at Giacobbi’s shop for repairs to the body after a fire. Having built an accurate body buck for the repairs to the original car, the body for this car was formed using the same buck, accurately capturing the original design and dimensions.
During the build, the engine was rebuilt with higher compression pistons and larger exhaust valves producing 300hp. For the transmission, Giacobbi continued his adherence to originality with a clever solution - he commissioned a former Motion Products mechanic to use an original 250 case which was reconfigured internally to allow fitment of 5-speed Tremec gears, while retaining the visual exterior features and castings of the original gearbox.
We will continue to share more information during the remaining days of this auction. Yes @Fleche_dOr absolutely correct on the Mille Miglia however this GTO is available for participation in the daily Mille Sorriso a wonderful and personal event for the driver, passenger, and anyone passing by.

@johntennyson asked "Are Steven and Peter the same guy?"
Pretty sure they are two different people. Btw, Peter also did the Sinthesis 2000 in 1970 (see video below) and he was head of engineering for the DeLorean Motor Company.

As @FantasyJunction (The Seller) correctly stated, "no", eligible cars must fall in one of the categories below:
"How to enter to the 1000 Miglia
Only the models of the cars, or the car itself, that took part in – or completed the entry to – one of the 1000 Miglia editions (1927 to 1957) and are registered to the Registro 1000 Miglia can take part in the 1000 Miglia."
1) "PARTICIPANT 1000 Miglia for those actual cars that took part in at least one of the twenty-four editions of the 1000 Miglia from 1927 to 1957"
2) "ELIGIBLE 1000 Miglia for car models which took part in at least one of the twenty-four editions of the 1000 Miglia from 1927 to 1957"

@Doug_NYC yes this is not a myth, rather many do this in keeping with the tradition of art museums when wealthy patrons offer one of their prized paintings on loan to the museum. Rather than have a bare space on the wall, the same painting (done by an experienced apprentice) with a similar frame is installed in place of the original.
With a re-creation of this level of excellence and authenticity, the quality of the build is not only there, the mechanical integrity of the drivetrain is also impressively unified to deliver as close to the original ownership experience as possible.
@hoopalalia the taller stick doesn't seem to make sense until you are driving it. The position is so natural and far more friendly to the levered gate action. More of an elbow bend than a shoulder stretch.
@jkunk When folks ask us "is it real" we often will whisper back and say "Oh man...what a relief...you see it too? So, I'm not the only one imagining it?"
@LewL at 6' 4", you will likely not fit. 6' 2" is about the limit with the current seat that is in this car. You might be able to gain a bit more seat space with some clever engineering, but at anything over 6' 1" you are basically wearing this like a fine Italian leather shoe.
@Nicastro1960 you asked if this car would be eligible for the Mille Miglia. It is such an accurate re-creation that just like the eight figure originals (which are also not eligible for the MM) this car would also not be eligible.

I’ve heard that the replicas are sometimes bought by the owners of the originals… so they can actually drive it vigorously.
Oct 2, 2026 · 21:02
@LewL - my first ride in a then new 250 GTO was at Goodwood which belonged to Prince Zourab Tchkotua who was 6ft 5 ins.
I subsequently spent a lot of time around these as a car crazy gopher for David Piper and then for John Coombs and the legendary founder of Maranello Concessionaires Col Ronnie Hoare who had several new 250 GTOs driven notably by Mike Parkes and Graham Hill. Subsequently I got to do gopher duties like windshield cleaning, pumping up tyres and eventually lap timing for the original ‘62/‘63 250 GTOs, the notchback 1964 GTO and the mid engined 250P of David Piper as well as Giovanni Volpi’s infamous ‘Breadvan’ as Zou was a close friend and later test driver for Volpi’s Scuderia Serenissima and the Giotto Bizzarini designed Serenissima Spider. With this background I have to say that this replica does not feel right - definitely a case of ‘close but no cigar’.
As I recall the original exhausts were by SNAP but please correct me if my old memory is failing me….

@hoopalalia The " flagpole " is how the originals came from the factory. Dereck Hill was of the same mindset when he drove his father's 64 GTO in the Petrolicious video. Once in the car ,he gets it ,and states "it's the perfect position "and storms the hill in force. Speaking of videos this one is right up there with Petrolicious. What a fantastic car GLWTA

I not only love it but 25 years ago, I had a "similar in spirit" replica 250 California Spyder built out of the remains of a rusted 1967 330GT. At that time these cars were largely ridiculed, one prominent journalist and publisher of a well known monthly, blowing them off as "fakey-doos" and "repli-doodads."
It is necessary to see them getting the recognition and respect they deserved then and deserve now. The cars haven't changed, only the perceptions.

I have watched the value of the cars used to make the clone go up in value significantly. The hand work and craftsmanship here is fully evident. What I really want is a clone of the BMW M1 Pro Car. Same money, give or take, but this one is done and the sun is out today.

Mechanically better? Emotionally stunted? Gorgeous though. For sure. Be cool to be in a color never painted at the factory, to sort of stake itself as a one-of-one version, though not factory.

Finally, I can have the car I have wanted forever but dear god don’t let me have this thing. I will destroy it.

Gotta appreciate the craftsmanship. Considering how abusive insurance must be to actually *drive* a legit 250GTO, I would not hesitate to own and truly enjoy this one instead, if I had the means.

Perhaps 5% of the genuine article. Still, that's $1.5m.

Pic 166 shows exactly the reason why this thing came together so beautifully and everyone is lusting over it: shop dog oversaw all the work.

I love that the description includes “rubber floor mats.” GORGEOUS car!

This knockoff is a travesty of a parody of a sham. Now, excuse me while I go take out a 2nd mortgage so I can bid on it.

I just sent it to him saying how impressive he was for building this.

Amazing job on this 250 GTO Re-Creation. What an absolutely beautiful machine. I can't imagine the labor hours that went into this. GLWTA!!

This 250 GTO re-creation is absolutely gorgeous, and ridiculously cool. A stupendous specimen, and here by the grace of a legendary @seller. Bonus points awarded as a mate/former colleague has almost the same name as the builder. lol. GLWTA!

This is so incredibly well done but sadly, with what a real GTO goes for, I can't even afford a re-creation of a 250 GTO
Could someone please re-create this re-creation for me, please...
