28-Years-Owned 1934 Auburn 850Y Cabriolet
Presentation
This 1934 Auburn 850Y is clothed in cabriolet bodywork and is said to have been purchased from the family of its original owner by the seller’s father in 1998. The car subsequently underwent a refurbishment in the early 2000s and was shown at various events before being placed in storage in 2006. After a 2024 recommissioning, it was shown at an ACD Club Show in Cambria, California, where it received ACD certification. Finished in Pewter Metallic with black and red accents, the car is powered by a 280ci Lycoming inline-eight that is linked with a three-speed manual transmission and a dual-ratio rear axle. Additional features include four-wheel hydraulic drum brakes, 16” red-painted wire wheels, an electric fuel pump, a black convertible top, red leather interior upholstery, and a rumble seat. Previously offered on BaT in May 2026, this 850Y cabriolet is now offered again by the seller on behalf of his father’s estate with ACD documentation and a clean California title.
The 1934 Auburn lineup carried the final design penned for the company by Alan Leamy and featured a split grille, streamlined fenders, and arched hood louvers. Produced only through July 1934, the range included six- and eight-cylinder models with a choice of four open or closed body styles.
Riding on a 126” wheelbase, this example’s cabriolet bodywork was refinished in the early 2000s in its current shade of Pewter Metallic with black and red accents converging in a “V” on the hood. The paintwork is said to have been touched up on several panels during the 2024 recommissioning. Features include a V-shaped front bumper, a raked folding windshield carrying dual side mirrors, rear-hinged doors, running boards, and a black convertible top.
Red-painted wire wheels wear bright hubcaps and beauty rings and are wrapped in 7.50-16 Lester wide-whitewall tires, while a spare is housed under a metal cover at the rear of the car. Stopping is handled by hydraulic drum brakes all around, and work on the brake system in 2024 is said to have included a rebuild of the master cylinder and flushing of the fluid.
The cabin is trimmed in red leather over a single bench seat with matching upholstery over the door panels and rumble seat. Additional features include color-matched carpeting, roll-up windows, door pockets, and a lockable glovebox with a door-mounted clock. The vacuum-operated windshield wipers are disconnected from the vacuum system.
The three-spoke steering wheel carries a switch for rear-end ratio selection and sits ahead of a black-painted dash accented by diamond-patterned panels. Instrumentation includes a 100-mph speedometer, a tachometer, and a combination gauge monitoring coolant temperature, oil pressure, fuel level, and amperage. The five-digit odometer shows 59k miles, approximately 500 of which have been added under current ownership.

The windshield does fold forward I believe with the top down, there are multiple pictures here with the top down on this Cabriolet.

The two speed rear end test that was performed was in third gear with the wheels spinning freely just like driving on the road, I did test it with pushing in the clutch and releasing it, tested it with the free-wheeling knob out, and again with-it in. Honestly, I believe the car is in Hi gear as the RPM's were approximately 2000 at 45 mph and almost 2500 at 50 mph during the driving videos. I do not believe I could get it to switch back into Low during the test, or it did not seem to do so. You can see the speedometer change, then return back to the same speed with the RPM's staying constant. What this free-wheeling knob on the dash does for the shifting of the rear end. The car will drive at highway speeds currently.

the Two Speed axle is as simple as it gets
Take the car out on the road, shift 1-2-3 then put the clutch in and select high. If the car goes into high and the speedo is correct, it works

The paint is a very light metallic gold/greyish pewter color, the black is a solid.

Here is a video testing the two-speed rear end at the steering wheel, with the rear end on jack stands and in gear. There is a knob on the dash that says freewheeling that leads to a cable on the side of the transmission that is part of the vacuum system that moves forward and back and the clutch also is part of the overall vacuum system going to the rear end two speed rear end. I tested the vacuum system, and it is working to the rear end and to the steering wheel, the steering wheel selector switch does change the RPMs on the speedometer and seems to do something. (Again, I am not sure how these two speed rear ends are supposed to work, or what procedures you go thru to change from HI to LOW and back, is it clutch in, Free-Wheeling knob out, in gear, in neutral, etc.) Anyway, this is my attempt to test this system and demonstrate it appears to change something. I am sure there are Auburn experts that can test it correctly. I am also addressing the small water pump leak and am repairing that issue today.

Fantastic Auburn. It would be in everybody's interest (especially yours) to somehow someway come up with a test of the two-speed rear end. Right now, wise bidders need to assume anything that isn't listed as working is inoperable. Good luck.

I have not tried to change the two-speed rear end and as far as I know it is hooked up and would work as I repaired the vacuum system lines under the car but am not sure how it is supposed to work. I would have to guess the car is in Hi gear now as it will cruise at 50-55 mph with no problem and not at that high of RPM's as I show in the driving videos I just posted. I found the vacuum system was pinched off when I first brought it out of storage for reasons I do not know, I am guessing it was the fuel pump issue being week at operating temperatures, my father performed the frame off restoration of the vehicle around 1999 after purchasing the car sometime in 1997-98. As far as I can tell, all of the gauges on the dash work, temp gauge, Alt gauge, fuel gauge, and oil pressure, RPM and speedometer. I do notice that the odometer trip numbers at the bottom of the speedometer do not seem to move or change and rotate like I believe they should work, not sure why as the speedometer does work. I do not believe the clock on the glove box is moving or keeping time but should be an easy fix. There are no major oil leaks under the car that I have noticed, there is that typical old car drip once in a while from the transmission area, and or oil pan nut where you drain the oil to change it. I believe that my father went thru the engine and performed the overhaul of it during the frame off restoration around 1999, I removed the carburetor and rebuilt that along with adding on a 6 volt electric fuel pump as the stock fuel pump was not working correctly once the engine got warmed up to operation temperature. I have noticed a coolant leak under the water pump and have greased the grease cert on it and have seen it stop leaking for a while. I would recommend someone with more knowledge on Auburns check that to see why it was leaking and properly diagnose the issue and repair it. The tires are in great condition all around, where off the ground during all it's years in storage under no weight. The car runs well after installing the 6 volt fuel pump.

Good morning. Have you been able to get the Columbia overdrive to work and if so what would you say would be a good cruising speed? If it doesn’t work, what would be a reasonable cruising speed? Do all the lights and guards work properly and are there any oil leaks. Any idea when the engine was last overhauled and what kind of condition are the tires in? Thank you

The bottom side of the vehicle was cleaned up in 2024 when it was brought out of storage and repainted with a black acrylic enamel, approximately 3/4 of a gallon of a good quality paint and
sprayed with a HVLP spray gun. The exhaust pipe and muffler later burned this paint off and now shows some surface rust on the exhaust system. Photos were of the car on jack stands, so difficult to photograph at a good angle to show all of the bottom on the car. The frame and other components are in great shape for a 92 year old car that was a frame off restoration around 1999.
