Presentation

This 1964 Shelby Cobra is one of approximately 528 Mark II examples produced between 1963 and 1965. CSX2231 was initially configured for street use and remained with multiple owners through 1978, when the next owner purchased the car after it had been parked for some time. It was modified for track use prior to the 1990s with a replacement 292ci V8 as well as a hood scoop, fender flares, and a roll hoop. The current owner purchased the car in 2004, and a subsequent refurbishment project involved stripping the car to bare metal and repainting the body in blue with white stripes. The engine was built to 292ci and modified with cylinder heads developed for DeTomaso and Shelby’s abandoned P70 project as well as quadruple Weber carburetors and tubular headers feeding a dual side-exit exhaust system. Shifting is via a Tremec five-speed manual transmission, and additional equipment includes 15″ Halibrand knock-off wheels and disc brakes. Inside, low-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather are accompanied by a wood-rimmed steering wheel and Stewart-Warner instrumentation. This Mark II Cobra is now offered on dealer consignment with removed components, refurbishment photos, awards, and an Illinois title.

Having retired from competitive driving due to a heart condition, Carroll Shelby instead began an endeavor to create a European-style sports car with American V8 power. In 1961, Shelby secured a partnership with AC Cars in Surrey, UK, to build a variant of the AC Ace that would be completed by Shelby in the US with engines supplied by Ford Motor Company. The resultant Cobra model was introduced in 1962, with the first 75 examples powered by a 260ci powerplant before production shifted to the use of Ford’s 289ci unit.

Noted to have left the factory in white, this example was modified for track use with a hood scoop, fender flares, a roll hoop, a Monza-style fuel-filler cap, and an external shut-off switch at some point prior to a vintage race at Road Atlanta in 1989. It was later disassembled and stripped to bare metal before being repainted in its current color scheme of blue with white stripes as part of the aforementioned refurbishment in the 2000s. Bumper jacks, dual side mirrors, wind wings, and a dual side-exit exhaust system were also added.

The 15″ Halibrand wheels are secured via three-eared knockoffs and are mounted with BFGoodrich g-Force Sport tires, as is a matching spare stored in the trunk compartment. Mark II Cobras utilize a rack-and-pinion setup, and stopping is handled by four-wheel disc brakes.

The cockpit houses fixed-back bucket seats trimmed in black leather with a color-matched dash. A multi-point harness is fitted for the driver, and additional features include black carpeting, AC-branded pedals, a sliding rearview mirror, translucent sun visors, and a fire extinguisher located in the trunk.
1964 Shelby Cobra 289 Mark II 5-Speed photo 6
The wood-rimmed steering wheel was refreshed under current ownership and sits ahead of overhauled Stewart-Warner instrumentation including a 160-mph speedometer, an 8k-rpm tachometer, and gauges monitoring oil temperature, coolant temperature, amperage, fuel level, and oil pressure. The five-digit odometer shows 33k miles, approximately 4k of which have been added under current ownership. Total mileage is unknown.

I hate to be the hype guy but this is seriously a blue chip investment grade automobile. There is probably money on the table for the buyer who wants to lightly adjust the overall look. Simply moving the side pipes under the car with the rear tire exit would be a big upgrade at little expense if sold down the road. The handwritten note from Bill Kemper about the chassis authenticity is absolute gold. I have no stake in this other than a little FOMO thinking about the potential here!

It has been a pleasure representing CSX2231 and telling some of its story. Thank you as well to everyone who has placed a bid. In 1974, Waldon or Walton Import Motors, located on Federal Highway in the Lake Worth/Boynton Beach, Fl area, had a 289 Cobra listed for $9,500.00. I test drove the car and got the price down to $8,700.00. My wife pitched an absolute fit and as much as I hate to admit it, I didn't buy the car. Think that might have been a pretty good deal?

@pbf777 The engine was made for rear cooling configuration. Thats why the you notice the rear exit. Water enters from the front and cools every cylinder and cools the rear more efficiently by exiting right there then bring the water forward with another manifold. Because of this it works very well and maintains good cooling and water temps. No overheating issues.

@SteveSunshine (The Seller),
Just a curious question concerning the cylinder heads and their routing of the engine coolant: Obviously here, we see where the coolant is exiting at the rear of the engine vs. the front as in the original S.B.F. configuration. And just for simplicity sake may we accept that the original routing was that of the coolant entering at the front of the block via the water pump mounting, the majority of this sum moves horizontally to the rear, then transfers upward into the cylinder heads at the rear, and then moves horizontally forward exiting at the front of the engine.
But, unlike the O.E.M. S.B.F. examples, these DeTomaso cylinder heads present a manifold running on the valley side, not seemingly all the way from the front, exiting to the rear, and in many instances this might indicate that the coolant is being "picked-up" along the way, but this would seemingly be defeating the the original "horizontal" coolant flow path in the engine and perhaps converting it to one of "vertical" design? Is this the case?
And if so, as understanding this configuration and that it generally requires greater efforts in regulation and distribution execution for acceptable results, what additional work was required to the engine block or even the water pump and/or special head gaskets to make this happen, successfully?
Sorry for the rather lengthy inquiry, but it's just the "inquiring mind" syndrome thing; well, at least that sounds better than the actual fact of just being ignorant!
Thank you.

To add a bit more Cobra trivia to the Road & Track performance graph. Ken Miles drove a 1965 Cobra 427 and set a new record for 0-100-0 in 13.8 seconds. That was certainly fast for the time.
From the November 1965 issue of Car and Driver:

What many people don't know is that a Jensen FF based car modified by auto industry supplier GKN into the GKN FFF100 did a 0-100-0 run in 1972 in just 11.5 seconds. It did it in 12.2 seconds in the rain. The car was built to show the robustness of the FF Developments (now owned by Ricardo) AWD system. The Jensen FF had AWD and anti-lock brakes in 1966.

The only real Shelby Cobra I’ve ever seen used to show up in the paddock at the Watkins Glen vintage races. It was just parked there- I never met the owner but it always carried a placard on the windshield that read:
“Yes it’s real
Yes I know what it’s worth
No it’s not for sale”
The new owner here will want one of those.

I am sorry to report that the Original Owner & Caretaker of CSX 2231, Fred Sisson passed away on September 3rd, 2026 at 86 years old just a few weeks after our 2 phone calls and his vivid fond memories about the car and the above story. I still have hopes of getting some period photos from the family either during or after the auction. RIP. https://www.barkesweaverglick.com/obituaries/Mr-Frederick-P-Sisson?obId=49566474

Although I know just enough about Cobras to be dangerous, this is obviouly a very nice one with a good story. At first glance, though, the chrome roll bar, "jack-lift" nerf bars, side pipes, white stripes, and rear flares---that often make kit cars look obvious---would make me wonder if it were a real one. Glad it is.
Sep 17, 2026 · 23:40
@cobralfa Yes, I too, quite well remember the "vertical acceleration graph" . Definitely grabs your attention.
@Fleche_dOr Thank you ! That R&T speeds in gears graph shows 56mph in 1st at 6000 rpm. But the "acceleration and coasting" graph shows a shift into 2nd at 66mph. Either way, that's a 1st gear that's street friendly for me. Still 4.2 seconds to 60 with 260 cubic inches. Gotta love it.

@brownnb These are not DeTomaso head covers. They are a rare set of 289 Experimental Heads that were made for a Shelby/Brock/DeTomaso P70. The experimental De Tomaso cylinder heads for the small-block Ford (SBF) 289/302 were a rare, high-performance prototype casting developed in the mid-to-late 1960s. Alejandro de Tomaso commissioned these aluminum heads to challenge existing racing variants—specifically the legendary Gurney-Weslake head. Because they were strictly experimental and only a handful of prototype pairs were cast, there are no generalized factory specification sheets. This is one of possibly 3 sets.

This may have been asked, but did many of these get De Tomaso head covers?

@SN95Cobralover
I have the R&T issue with CSX2000 in yellow (briefly) on the cover, and that was part of what caused me to begin my obsession.
The Cobra road test inside the issue had the usual acceleration graph included with the rest of the stats; unlike any other previous R&T road test, the acceleration curve through the gears is almost vertical. No other previous test had ever looked remotely similar, which got my attention.
GLWTS!

Just to make it clear, the T56 transmission is a "6-speed" and although mentioned repeatedly, apparently isn't what is mounted in this vehicle: rather it is the "TKO-600" that is the "5-speed", that 'is' installed.
Sep 16, 2026 · 20:27
@SteveSunshine Thanks for the update on the TKO600. Would be good to know the final drive ratio when you come across it. It's ONLY MY OPINION that a 9:1 Overall in first is a good place to be, not wishing it on anyone else. Always found it more street enjoyable to have a long 1st- with a performance V8 that is.
Anyone with an original Road & Track or Car and Driver road test of the 289 car from back in the day showing the acceleration graph with "speeds in gears"?? Found a graph of a 260 car showing approx 57-58 in first!

@SteveSunshine Thank you! Appears the T56R is a near identical match to the T10 ratio wise 1-4. A final drive ratio of 4:09 would put it in a good place for street use at ~9:1 Overall. Was worried it ended up with the silly 3:35 T5 first gear.

@SN95Cobralover We are trying to get the tag number indicating the ratio on the 5 speed and will advise. Here is a photo of the Bill. As for the T-10 we will check but since it was set for Road Racing, this was typical but not guaranteed until we check. The Original Early T10 "Close-Ratio" Set (2.20 First Gear) — The Classic Road Race SetCommonly found in early Corvettes, Shelbys, and Trans-Am style cars from the late 1950s and 1960s. The Ratios: 2.20 (1st) | 1.64 or 1.66 (2nd) | 1.31 (3rd) | 1.00 (4th)

OUT STAND DING 🛎️, DING 🛎️, DING 🛎️! Both the car and the presentation. Plus some great stories to go with it. Very tasteful and useful modifications - like the 5-speed for highway driving, the classic color combo, the Shelby / De Tomaso lineage, wheel choice, etc., etc. The big question, to be answered when it closes, is how much all the changes from original will affect value. Regardless, it is an original cobra and just like a lot of 60+ year old people walking around, it has had a few modifications. 😉
Best of luck with the sale. Definitely following.

I ordered one of these, a British Racing Green unit in NYC and put $25 down on it. It was priced at $6641.00. I didn't inherit any money when I turned 21 like I told the dealer I might and had to release it to sell to someone else. It did show up on the showroom floor and that was the last time I saw it. I later converted the front of my MGA to look like a cobra... and then changed it back when I made it my first race car... This was in 1965.

@FoxtrotOne Crazy stuff can happen when you’re dealing with trailers… I was driving thru Ashland, KY one day in the early ‘70s. At that time, the Pontiac/GMC dealer was on Winchester Ave. in the middle of the downtown area. There was a 6-car, double-layer car hauler delivering a new GMC van – one of those without any windows in the back. It was on the top level of the truck and the delivery driver completely missed the ramps. So, there sat the poor van on its back doors – pointing at the sky! I always wondered what happened to the van…

This has no impact on the present day value or significance of the car but it is a funny story to consider. So... it rolled off a trailer and hit a tree hard enough that the front suspension broke and the chassis number was removed at the time of repair commissioned by the first owner? The original Ford dealer in the 1960s sold it as-is with the damage. "during which time the chassis number in that area was removed" The front leaf spring tower/pyramid must have needed significant repair work. It sounds like 1960s car salesman speak for "we took it out on a hot lap and did something really stupid"...better find a way to put a good spin on this story. If it truly rolled off a trailer during the normal course of business operation that would have surly been covered by insurance and easily fixed before the original sale. Take it for what it is worth, just 0.02 cents from the peanut gallery!
