This 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 3.8 is one of 45 built for the last two model years, and it is #12 of the final 15 made for the 1998 season. The car spent time with three owners before being acquired by the seller in December 2012 and subsequently underwent an engine rebuild by Porsche Motorsport North America (PMNA) in August 2015 in addition to a transaxle rebuild by Cervelli Technical Service in September of that year. Now showing 16k kilometers (~10k miles), it wears a multi-color livery and has front and rear spoilers, center-lock Speedline 18″ wheels, air jacks, and an adjustable coilover suspension. Inside, the driver is provided by a MOMO steering wheel and a MoTeC C125 digital display as well as a carbon-backed Recaro seat, a Schroth harness, a Matter roll cage, and a Werner fire-suppression setup. This 993 Carrera Cup 3.8 is now offered on a bill of sale in Evergreen, Colorado, with service records and a collection of spare and removed parts.
993 Cups were specified from the factory with a splitter, a raised rear wing, and tow points as well as an aluminum hood, lightweight glass, polycarbonate rear quarter windows, and no impact beams in the doors. The sound insulation, carpeting, headliner, passenger seat, power steering, hand brake, and heating system were also omitted, and a Matter FIA-approved roll cage was installed inside.
This example is finished in Guards Red and wears a multi-color livery in the style of a 1995 Porsche 993 Super Cup VIP. The factory front spoiler, hood, wing, bumpers, and other exterior components have been replaced with aftermarket carbon-fiber units, though the removed items are included in the sale. The seller notes that paint touch-up has been performed in various places to correct stone chips.
993 Cup cars featured four-wheel independent suspension and a 70mm lower ride height than the contemporary 993 road car with height-adjustable coilovers featuring stiffer springs and dampers. They also received upgraded brakes and a five-channel ABS system with a motorsport control unit. This example has air jacks and rides on 18″ center-lock Speedlines mounted with staggered Michelin rubber. The wheel bearings were replaced in September 2015, and the brake fluid was flushed in August 2023.
The cockpit houses a carbon-backed Recaro racing seat paired with a Schroth harness. Additional racing and safety equipment includes a Motorola radio, a Coolshirt system, and a Werner fire-suppression setup.
The MOMO steering wheel is mounted to a quick-release hub and fronts a column-mounted MoTeC C125 digital display. Factory VDO instrumentation consists of a 300-km/h speedometer, a 7,600-rpm tachometer, an analog clock, and auxiliary gauges. The six-digit mechanical odometer shows 16k kilometers (~10k miles).

If I recall correctly, this was at Luft 7 in Indy and looked fantastic. I think I may have talked to the owner about growing up on the west coast. Very cool car!

@uscarrera @Ninjabones Thank you both for the questions. To clarify the car’s history, this 993 Cup was never raced in the Porsche Supercup or in any Carrera Cup championship. The car was delivered new from the factory to Porsche Motorsport North America. Lewis Bakes purchased it from PMNA on September 22, 1998. He later sold the car to Tsutomu Kajita on August 14, 2002. Tsutomu Kajita sold the car to David Buhain on April 28, 2005. During David’s ownership, the car participated in Rennsport Reunion IV, which is why the Rennsport Reunion IV decal remains on the windshield. David also enjoyed the car recreationally and drove it on the street to Cars & Coffee events. That Rennsport Reunion participation should not be confused with the car having been campaigned in a professional racing series. It did not compete in Supercup or any national Carrera Cup championship. I purchased the car directly from David Buhain on December 28, 2012, and have owned it ever since. During my ownership, I have also used it only recreationally, including occasional private track driving for enjoyment, never in competition or timed racing. So while the car has been enjoyed at Porsche events and on track, it has never had the kind of competitive race history normally associated with many Cup cars. That is also one of the reasons it remains in such exceptional condition today.

Super-Cup used the "GT3-Cup" in 1998, Carrera Cup used the "Cup 3.8" in 1998. Was this car used in the 1998 Carrera Cup series if Yes, which team ? Imported by Porsche PMNA ? or

Very cool car. Some questions have arisen regarding whether or not this car ran (or could have run) in the Supercup series. Given that it was built in 1998, it could not have run in that series as there was a transition to the 996 GT3 cup in that year. However, a 993 cup car produced in 1998 could potentially have run in national Carrera Cup championships, including the German Carrera Cup (youtube video here: https://youtu.be/lG-6ZBMnf3w?si=MV_uWJC9XKQHvX26).

Welcome everyone, and thank you for taking the time to look at this 1998 Porsche 911 Carrera Cup 3.8. It is a very rare and special car, and one that has been extremely enjoyable to own. The driving experience is very pure and mechanical, exactly what you would expect from a 993-generation Cup car, and that is a big part of what makes it so special. The car was never used for racing or competition. These were simply private recreational track days, with no timed sessions or competitive use. With its rarity, history, documentation, and character, I believe this is a very special Porsche for both an enthusiast and a collector. Best of luck to everyone bidding!

@Tommysita I personally drove it on track purely for enjoyment as a hobby, typically only once every two or three months. It was used exclusively for private, recreational track driving, never in competition, never in timed racing, and never with the intention of pushing the car as a race car.
