2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss
Presentation
Limited to just 75 examples worldwide, the 2009 Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren Stirling Moss is an ultra-rare edition of the SLR series paying tribute to the 300 SLR’s dominance in the 1955 Mille Miglia. Boasting the 722 Edition’s underpinnings, the car showcases distinctive carbon fiber bodywork penned under the direction of Korean designer Yoon II-hun, lacking a roof and windscreen for an unadulterated driving experience. The handcrafted and supercharged 5.4-liter SLR AMG V8 delivers uncompromising performance, propelling the car from 0 to 60 MPH in approximately three seconds and achieving a top speed of 217 MPH.
This example is finished in the special-order shade of Antimony Grey Crystal over exclusive Black leather upholstery. Exclusively produced for the 2009 model year, the Stirling Moss is coveted as both a collector's masterpiece and an exhilarating driver's machine. This rare example is now being offered for auction out of Germany, showing just 971 kilometers (603 miles) on the odometer.
Inspired by the legendary 300 SLR race car, the Stirling Moss edition features a similar open-cockpit, arrow-shaped design, omitting the roof, side windows, and windscreen. Crafted from lightweight carbon fiber, its striking profile is defined by a long, sculpted silhouette, dual aerodynamic humps behind the seats, and iconic twin side-exit titanium exhaust outlets. Additional details include redesigned front and rear fascias unique to this edition, an imposing exposed-carbon-fiber rear diffuser, exposed carbon fiber side coves, two large hood vents complemented by a smaller vent in the front passenger side, and a manually operated air brake that can be angled up to 35 degrees for added downforce. This example was custom-ordered in Antimony Grey Crystal and is complemented by silver-painted brake calipers and 19” lightweight multispoke alloy wheels.
Focused on motorsport, the minimalist cabin is outfitted with black leather complemented by white stitching. The extensive use of aluminum and carbon fiber trim underscores the machine’s lightweight design. One-piece bucket seats, analog instrumentation, aluminum pedals, and a leather-and-Alcantara three-spoke steering wheel emphasize function over excess. Stirling Moss’s engraved signature is set into the aluminum trim just behind the gear knob.
Factory-rated at 641 HP and 605 lb-ft of torque, the supercharged 5.4-liter SLR AMG V8 is shared with the SLR 722 Edition, though the Stirling Moss sheds nearly 441 lbs. Power is delivered to the rear wheels through a 5-speed AMG Speedshift automatic transmission.
The suspension features aluminum double wishbones with coil springs and twin-tube gas-pressurized shock absorbers, complete with a front anti-roll bar and anti-dive/anti-squat geometry. Compared to the standard SLR, the Stirling Moss benefits from sharper steering response and springs that are 15% stiffer, equipped with aluminum-shelled Koni dampers. Stopping is facilitated by high-performance carbon-ceramic brakes paired with Mercedes’ Sensotronic Brake Control (SBC) brake-by-wire system.
